Establishing a Group Educational Session for Hyperacusis Patients.

Purpose Audiologists should be treating hyperacusis patients. However, it can be difficult to know where to begin because treatment protocols and evidence-based treatment studies are lacking. A good place to start in any tinnitus and hyperacusis clinic is to incorporate a group educational session. Method Here, we outline our approach to establishing a hyperacusis group educational session that includes specific aspects of getting to know each patient to best meet their needs, understanding the problems associated with hyperacusis, explaining the auditory system and the relationship of hyperac

X-linked hearing loss: two gene mutation examples provide generalizable implications for clinical care.

PURPOSE: To describe the inheritance patterns and auditory phenotype features of 3 Canadian families with mutations in 2 X-linked "deafness" genes (DFNX). METHOD: Audiological, medical, and family histories were collected and family members interviewed to compare hearing thresholds and case histories between cases with mutations in SMPX versus POU3F4. RESULTS: The family pedigrees reveal characteristic X-linked inheritance patterns. Phenotypic features associated with the SMPX (DFNX4) mutation include early onset in males with rapid progression from mild and flat to sloping sensorineural los

Non-verbal visual reinforcement affects speech audiometry in the elderly.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how non-verbal visual reinforcement provided by the audiologist during speech testing influences performance in the elderly. Thirty-two volunteers with age-related hearing loss with or without dual sensory-impairment (DSI), were administered a speech audiometry test in which they repeated lists of ten disyllabic words in two different conditions, namely with and without visual reinforcement. In the conditions of "with visual reinforcement", the tester provided non-verbal cues to acknowledge the response of each participant. The "visual reinforcement

An unusual case of otitis media.

This case report of bilateral otitis media in a 39-year-old woman secondary to Wegener's Granulomatosis highlights, for the audiologist, the importance of being aware of some of the less common etiologies of middle ear disease. Bilateral otitis media that resists usual forms of medical treatment may represent one of the earliest signs of Wegener's Granulomatosis, a potentially life-threatening disease. According to recent literature, involvement of the ears, nose, and throat can in many instances be the only early manifestation of the disease. It is important that audiologists be aware of the

Hearing Loss and Cognitive Decline in the Aging Population: Emerging Perspectives in Audiology.

In this perspective article, the author explores the connections between hearing loss, central auditory processing, and cognitive decline, offering insights into the complex dynamics at play. Drawing upon a range of studies, the relationship between age-related central auditory processing disorders and Alzheimer's disease is discussed, with the aim of enhancing our understanding of these interconnected conditions. Highlighting the evolving significance of audiologists in the dual management of cognitive health and hearing impairments, the author focuses on their role in identifying early signs

The disuse of hearing aids in elderly people diagnosed with a presbycusis at an old age home, in Johannesburg, South Africa: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is the most common form of human sensory deficit with its prevalence highest within the geriatric population. Approximately a third of adults aged from 61 years exhibit the characteristics of presbycusis, a number one contributor to communication disorders among the elderly, thereby affecting the social, functional and psychological wellbeing of the elderly. Subsiquently, this leads to loneliness, isolation, dependence and frustration. OBJECTIVE: To explore reasons why elderly people diagnosed with presbycusis and fitted with hearing aids stop using hearing aids post

Hearing Aid Acquisition in Chinese Older Adults With Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence and associated factors of hearing aid acquisition in Chinese older adults. METHODS: We obtained data from a population-based survey on ear and hearing disorders, which was conducted in 4 provinces of China in 2014 to 2015. Trained examiners conducted pure tone audiometry and audiologists further ascertained for hearing loss. We relied on hearing conditions and audiologists' recommendations to identify 1503 participants who needed to wear hearing aids. RESULTS: Among those 1503 participants, the estimated prevalence of hearing aid acquisition was 6.5%

[Rehabilitative measures in hearing-impaired children].

On the basis of certain fundamental data on the maturation processes of the central auditory pathways in early childhood the importance of early intervention with hearing aids is discussed and emphasized. Pathological hearing, that is acoustical deprivation in early childhood will influence the maturation process. Very often speech development is delayed if diagnosis and therapy or rehabilitation are not early enough. Anamnesis, early diagnosis and clinical differential diagnosis are required before a hearing aid can be fitted. Selection criteria and adjustment parameters are discussed, showin

The role of the speech-language pathologist with hearing-impaired infants.

The educators of the deaf, the audiologists, and other similar professional groups appear to have reasonably clearly delineated roles to play in the management of the hearing-impaired child. Not so with the speech-language pathologist. This paper specifies such a role and offers a model for the delivery of speech-language pathology services to the hearing-impaired infant.

Psychological Therapy for People with Tinnitus: A Scoping Review of Treatment Components.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is associated with depression and anxiety disorders, severely and adversely affecting the quality of life and functional health status for some people. With the dearth of clinical psychologists embedded in audiology services and the cessation of training for hearing therapists in the UK, it is left to audiologists to meet the psychological needs of many patients with tinnitus. However, there is no universally standardized training or manualized intervention specifically for audiologists across the whole UK public healthcare system and similar systems elsewhere across the w

Hearing Loss and Disorders: The Repercussions of Climate Change.

PURPOSE: Climate change is considered to be the greatest threat to human health in the 21st century, and its effects are accelerating. Extensive research has clearly demonstrated its increasing impact across the continuum of health conditions. Despite this, there has been limited attention to the ramifications of climate change on hearing loss and hearing disorders. This lack of consideration is somewhat surprising as the environment itself and its changing nature have a substantial effect on hearing. METHOD: Tackling climate change could be the greatest global health opportunity of the 21st

The next generation of Nucleus(®) fitting: a multiplatform approach towards universal cochlear implant management.

OBJECTIVE: This article provides a detailed description and evaluation of the next Nucleus(®) cochlear implant fitting suite. A new fitting methodology is presented that, at its simplest level, requires a single volume adjustment, and at its advanced level, provides access to 22-channel fitting. It is implemented on multiple platforms, including a mobile platform (Remote Assistant Fitting) and an accessible PC application (Nucleus Fitting Software). Additional tools for home care and surgical care are also described. DESIGN: Two trials were conducted, comparing the fitting methodology with th

Prevalence of Auditory Problems in Children With Feeding and Swallowing Disorders.

PURPOSE: Although an interdisciplinary approach is recommended for assessment and management of feeding or swallowing difficulties, audiologists are not always included in the interdisciplinary team. The purpose of this study is to report the prevalence of middle ear and hearing problems in children with feeding and swallowing disorders and to compare this prevalence with that in typical children. METHOD: A total of 103 children were included in the study: 44 children with feeding and swallowing disorders and 59 children without any such disorders. Audiological examinations included case-hist

A review of common dermatologic disorders of the external ear.

Skin disorders of the external ear are common. Although audiologists will not necessarily treat these conditions, it is important for them to be aware of these disorders and refer patients to a specialist in some instances. This report summarizes eight of the most commonly encountered skin conditions with an emphasis on recognition and appropriate referral. The cutaneous disorders of the external ear discussed in the article are divided into benign, premalignant, and malignant groups.
