A nine-year evaluation of emergency department personnel exposure to ionizing radiation.

Emergency department personnel experience potential occupational hazards from exposure to ionizing radiation (x-rays). To assess this risk, ionizing radiation exposure was analyzed during a nine-year period for 128 ED personnel. The group consisted of 21 physicians, 92 nurses, and 15 ancillary personnel. Exposure was measured for both penetrating and nonpenetrating radiation using standard film dosimeter badges. Film badge use compliance was 66.7% for physicians, 86.2% for nurses, and 86.7% for ancillary personnel. Penetrating radiation exposure averaged 0.12 mrem/month for physicians, 0.70 mr

[Cancer incidence and mortality after low-dose radiation exposure: epidemiological aspects].

Current recommendations for limiting exposure to ionizing radiation are based on the linear-no-threshold (LNT) model for radiation carcinogenesis under which every dose, no matter how low, carries with it some cancer risk. In this review, epidemiological evidences are discussed that the LNT hypothesis is incorrect at low doses. A large set of data was accumulated that showed that cancer risk after ordinarily encountered radiation exposure (natural background radiation, medical X-rays, etc.) is much lower than projections based on the LNT model. The discovery of the low-level radiation hormesis

Postradiation sarcoma: case report and review of the potential complications of therapeutic ionizing radiation.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy is an acceptable treatment choice for many cutaneous malignancies. A potential late sequela of ionizing radiation is the development of secondary neoplasms within the treatment field. Although there are well-known cutaneous syndromes in which the use of ionizing radiation is contraindicated, in other clinical situations, physicians may not fully realize the risks associated with this therapeutic modality. OBJECTIVE: Through a case report presentation, a potential adverse consequence of radiation therapy will be discussed. A subsequent review of the literature sho

[Radiation risks in dental and medical radiography].

Biological effects of exposure to ionizing radiation in diagnostic dental and medical radiology are stochastic effects such as carcinogenesis and genetical effects. Today, radiation exposure due to an x-ray or nuclear medicine examination varies from less then 0.001 mSv to more then 10 mSv effective dose. The background level of natural radiation in the Netherlands is about 2 mSv. Assuming that an appropriate indication for the examination exists, it can be stated that generally the diagnostic information obtained outweighs by far the risks involved in the exposure to radiation.

Radiation for below the knee skin cancers: a single institution experience.

Background: Historically, radiation to skin cancers for the lower legs has been avoided due to the perceived increased risk of radiation toxicity (poor wound healing, radiation necrosis). However, there is a paucity of published data regarding this perceived risk.Purpose: The objective was to review the risk of poor wound healing/radiation necrosis occurring post radiation and to determine rates of complete response (CR), partial response (PR), and progressive disease after radiation therapyMaterials and methods: A retrospective review of patients treated with radiation for skin cancer below t

Sitagliptin Alleviates Radiation-Induced Kidney and Testis Degeneration in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced tissue degeneration is the most important side effect of radiotherapy. Sitagliptin with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity was tested in alleviating the radiation-induced cellular degeneration in kidney and testis tissues. METHODS: Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups as control, radiation (RT), radiation + sitagliptin (RT + SGT), and sitagliptin + radiation (SGT + RT). The RT group received 8 Gy radiation. Sitagliptin was applied per os at a 10 mg/kg dose for 14 days to the SGT groups either after or before radiation. RESULTS: Radiation

Assessing and improving radiation safety in cardiac catheterization: a study from Cairo University Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Catheter laboratories are high-radiation exposure environments, especially during X-ray procedures like percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and electrophysiological studies. Radiation exposure poses risks of stochastic (e.g., cancer) and deterministic (e.g., skin changes) effects. This study assessed radiation safety and health practices in a cardiac catheterization unit to optimize radiation safety. A cross-sectional study in Cairo University Hospital (March-September 2019) evaluated 700 patients and healthcare workers. Real-time radiation measurements, educational lect

How radiation-specific is the dicentric assay?

QUESTION: Quantitative cytogenetic analysis of structural chromosome aberrations in human peripheral blood lymphocytes is widely used as an assay to detect and quantify exposure to a variety of clastogens. Unstable chromosome rearrangements, dicentric chromosomes (dic) and centric ring chromosomes (centric r), are routinely used as biomarkers to assess human exposure to ionizing radiation ("biological dosimetry"). In the moderate- to high-dose range many authors consider the dic assay sufficiently radiation-specific for both practical and legal purposes. However, specificity has never been eva

Hazards of Ionizing Radiation and its Impact on Spine Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Spine surgery relies heavily on imaging, with radiography-based devices being the major operating room imaging modality. Radiation exposure is an occupational risk historically recognized shortly after the discovery of radiation itself. Exposure of both patients and operating room staff is of increasing concern as the knowledge regarding the hazards of radiation is steadily accumulating. METHODS: We conducted a literature review of the history of radiation exposure limits and updates on current studies showing the risks of low-dose exposures. RESULTS: Multiple studies reporting o

Radiation exposure in children with inflammatory bowel disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Radiation exposure due to medical imaging has grown exponentially over the past two decades and the awareness has increased in the last few years with a number of articles in scientific publications and lay press. Radiation increases the risk of cancer and is particularly a concern in children. Limiting radiation exposure is most important in children, who are more sensitive to radiation, and specifically in children with a chronic lifelong disease such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). RECENT FINDINGS: Children with IBD and specifically Crohn's disease demonstrate high

Biological basis for assessing carcinogenic risks of low-level radiation.

Ionizing radiation is carcinogenic to many, if not most, tissues. Its carcinogenicity varies, however, depending on the tissue exposed, conditions of exposure, genetic background, sex, age of the exposed individual, and other factors. The neoplasms induced by radiation also vary in their types and in their times of onset, depending on the age and sex of the exposed individual. The long induction period for radiation carcinogenesis and the enhancing or inhibiting effects of other agents acting after irradiation imply that the induction of cancer is a multistage process, in keeping with experime

Evaluation of short-chain fatty acid enemas: treatment of radiation proctitis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation proctitis is a common complication of abdominal and pelvic radiotherapy; unfortunately, there is no established effective therapy for radiation proctitis. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) have been effectively used to treat a variety of colitides. We sought to determine whether SCFA enemas have a role in the treatment of radiation proctitis. METHODS: Seven patients completed an open-labeled, pilot study to evaluate the effect of SCFA on clinical, endoscopic, and pathological parameters of radiation proctitis. RESULTS: Four weeks of treatment with SCFA enemas resulted in c

Radiological monitoring and assessment of the radiation situation in the Kungur Ice Cave.

This article presents the results of comprehensive radiological studies conducted in 2021 in order to assess the radiation situation in the Kungur Ice Cave (hereinafter referred to as the KIC). Since the cave is a fairly popular sightseeing object, therefore, the safety of both tourists and workers is a key task for scientific study. The radiation safety assessment was carried out taking into account the parameters of the radiation (gamma) background, measurements of radon and thoron concentrations, microclimatic indicators (air temperature, humidity), airflow rate, illumination and calculatio

Characterization of cellular senescence in radiation ulcers and therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stem cell-derived conditioned medium.

BACKGROUND: Radiation ulcers are a common and severe injury after uncontrolled exposure to ionizing radiation. The most important feature of radiation ulcers is progressive ulceration, which results in the expansion of radiation injury to the nonirradiated area and refractory wounds. Current theories cannot explain the progression of radiation ulcers. Cellular senescence refers to as irreversible growth arrest that occurs after exposure to stress, which contributes to tissue dysfunction by inducing paracrine senescence, stem cell dysfunction and chronic inflammation. However, it is not yet cle
