The observed relationship between the degree of parasite aggregation and the prevalence of infection within human host populations for soil-transmitted helminth and schistosome infections.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) and schistosome parasites are highly aggregated within the human population. The probability distribution of worms per person is described well by the negative binomial probability distribution with aggregation parameter, k, which varies inversely with parasite clustering. The relationship between k and prevalence in defined populations subject to mass drug administration is not well understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: We use statistical methods to estimate k using two large independent datasets for STH and schistosome infections from India and Niger,

[Peculiarities of the biology and parasite fauna of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in the Pista River (White Sea Basin), according to the Gyrodactylus salaris infestation].

Juvenile salmon Salmo salar m. sebago Girard from the Pista River system (the White Sea Basin) was investigated. The data on species composition and occurrence peculiarities of Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957 are given. This monogenean is the alien species for the river system and it is recorded for the first time. It is shown that the distribution of the parasite abundance is can be described as the negative binomial distribution; variations of its parameters (k and p) were also characterized. Parasitological data obtained, as well as the data describing the characteristics of growth and

Bayesian inference for disease prevalence using negative binomial group testing.

Group testing, also known as pooled testing, and inverse sampling are both widely used methods of data collection when the goal is to estimate a small proportion. Taking a Bayesian approach, we consider the new problem of estimating disease prevalence from group testing when inverse (negative binomial) sampling is used. Using different distributions to incorporate prior knowledge of disease incidence and different loss functions, we derive closed form expressions for posterior distributions and resulting point and credible interval estimators. We then evaluate our new estimators, on Bayesian a

The relation between the number of parasites/host and host age: population dynamic causes and maximum likelihood estimation.

We examined dynamical factors that shape the distribution of the number of parasites/host in constant or temporally varying environments, and with or without host-age dependent variation in host susceptibility and parasite mortality. We predict properties of the parasite distribution in the absence of density-dependent factors such as density-dependent mortality of recruitment and parasite-induced host mortality. These properties provide a criterion for the detection of density dependence in temporally variable systems with host-age dependent interactions. We have then introduced methods to es

Association Between Specialist Distribution and Regional Variation in Plasmapheresis Use in Japan: A Population-Level Cross-Sectional Study.

Plasmapheresis is widely used in Japan; however, regional variation in its use and its association with specialist distribution remain unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study using the 9th National Database Open Data (fiscal year 2022) to assess regional variation in plasmapheresis use and examined its association with the distribution of nephrologists, dialysis specialists, and apheresis specialists. Plasmapheresis use was identified using the relevant receipt code, and age- and sex-adjusted standardized claim ratios (SCRs) were calculated. Plasmapheresis use differed 6.5-fold across re

Analysis of gamasid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) associated with the Asian house rat, Rattus tanezumi (Rodentia: Muridae) in Yunnan Province, southwest China.

During a survey lasting from 1990 to 2008, we captured 4,113 Asian house rats, Rattus tanezumi Temminck 1844 (Rodentia: Muridae) from 28 counties of Yunnan Province in southwestern China. From these rats, a total of 19,304 gamasid mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) were collected and identified as comprising 50 different species. The species diversity of gamasid mites from this single rat species is higher than that reported previously from multiple hosts within a given geographical region. Of the 50 mite species, 31 species belonged to ectoparasites and 19 species belonged to free-living mites. The

Patterns of soil-transmitted helminth aggregation in the human host population after several years of intensive mass drug administration.

BACKGROUND: Community-wide mass drug administration (cMDA) is known as an effective, albeit costly, control strategy for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) parasites. A better understanding of STH aggregation after many rounds of cMDA could help shape more cost-effective policies. METHODS: This analysis uses data from the Geshiyaro project, aiming to break STH transmission by cMDA and water, sanitation and hygiene interventions. Ascaris lumbricoides infection prevalence is derived from egg count data and parasite aggregation is obtained by fitting a negative binomial distribution to the frequenc

Effect of management practices on screw-worm among sheep in São Paulo State, Brazil.

The screw-worm Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), whose larvae develop in wild and domestic animals as well as in man, is one of the major causes of myiasis in Brazil. Sheep raising is expanding in the state of São Paulo, where information about the infestation of screw-worm is necessary for appropriate control measures. The present data were obtained from questionnaires sent to all sheep breeders belonging to Associacão Paulista de Criadores de Ovinos--ASPACO (São Paulo State Association of Sheep Breeders). Response reliability was tested by random visits paid to 10.6% of the respondents. Th

Virus contamination from operation and maintenance events in small drinking water distribution systems.

We tested the association of common events in drinking water distribution systems with contamination of household tap water with human enteric viruses. Viruses were enumerated by qPCR in the tap water of 14 municipal systems that use non-disinfected groundwater. Ultraviolet disinfection was installed at all active wellheads to reduce virus contributions from groundwater to the distribution systems. As no residual disinfectant was added to the water, any increase in virus levels measured downstream at household taps would be indicative of distribution system intrusions. Utility operators report

Microfilarial distribution of Loa loa in the human host: population dynamics and epidemiological implications.

Severe adverse events (SAEs) following ivermectin treatment may occur in people harbouring high Loa loa microfilarial (mf) densities. In the context of mass ivermectin distribution for onchocerciasis control in Africa, it is crucial to define precisely the geographical distribution of L. loa in relation to that of Onchocerca volvulus and predict the prevalence of heavy infections. To this end, we analysed the distribution of mf loads in 4183 individuals living in 36 villages of central Cameroon. Mf loads were assessed quantitatively by calibrated blood smears, collected prior to ivermectin dis

Neoplastic diseases of the haematopoietic and lymphoid tissues.

Systemic lymphosarcomas are common in all species of domestic mammal. A binomial classification of these tumours, based on both the anatomical form (i.e., distribution of lesions) and the type of cytology, is proposed. Mast cell tumours also are common, especially in the dog. The categories of lymphoid neoplasms described are: lymphosarcoma, lymphoid leukaemia, nodular lymphoid hyperplasia, tumours of the immunoglobulin-forming cells, and thymoma. The myeloid neoplasms described are: myeloid leukaemia, erythroleukaemia, acute erythraemia, polycythaemia vera, megakaryocytoid leukaemia, panmyelo

The sex ratios of anencephalics born to anencephalic-prone women.

Anencephalic infants born to women who are very prone to bear them do not have a sex ratio appreciably different from that of other anencephalic births. Moreover, the sexes of affected cases in sibships containing exactly two anencephalic births seem to be distributed approximately binomially. Bearing in mind the correlation between prevalence at birth and sex ratio in anencephaly, these findings suggest that an environmental teratogen attacks the fetuses of women who are already (perhaps genetically) disposed to bear anencephalic infants.

Pattern of tick aggregation on mice: larger than expected distribution tail enhances the spread of tick-borne pathogens.

The spread of tick-borne pathogens represents an important threat to human and animal health in many parts of Eurasia. Here, we analysed a 9-year time series of Ixodes ricinus ticks feeding on Apodemus flavicollis mice (main reservoir-competent host for tick-borne encephalitis, TBE) sampled in Trentino (Northern Italy). The tail of the distribution of the number of ticks per host was fitted by three theoretical distributions: Negative Binomial (NB), Poisson-LogNormal (PoiLN), and Power-Law (PL). The fit with theoretical distributions indicated that the tail of the tick infestation pattern on m

Turrill's Omega: A Heuristic Index for Quantifying the Support of a Taxonomic Hypothesis.

Biological research relies on the use of taxa, with species expressed in the form of a Latin binomial. Although taxa are commonly regarded as established entities, they actually represent hypotheses on the distribution of natural biological variation and may change their status as new systematic knowledge becomes available. A long-standing problem affecting systematics and taxonomy, with important consequences for other biological disciplines, is that a binomial itself conveys no information about the strength of the taxonomic hypothesis it represents. Here, we introduce the concept of a stand

Spatial mapping of dengue incidence with climate factors at district levels in Bangladesh.

This study investigates the spatial distribution of dengue incidence in Bangladesh and its correlation with climate factors at the district level. Data from the Institute for Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) were used. Poisson, zero-inflated, and negative binomial models were employed, with the negative binomial regression model selected based on Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) values. Spatial mapping revealed varying dengue incidence across districts, with higher transmission in

Number Bias in Clinicians' Documentation of Actinic Keratosis Removal.

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a pre-cancerous skin condition caused by sun exposure. Number bias, a phenomenon that occurs when meaning other than numerical value is associated with numbers, may influence the reporting of AK removal. The present study aims to determine if number bias is affecting healthcare providers' documentation of patient-provider encounters. METHODS: A single-center retrospective chart review of 1415 patients' charts was conducted at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. To determine if there was a significant difference between even and odd-numbered AK re
