Does supply meet demand? A comparison of perfusion strategies on cerebral metabolism in a neonatal swine model.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the effects of selective antegrade cerebral perfusion compared with other perfusion strategies on indices of cerebral blood flow, oxygenation, cellular stress, and mitochondrial function. METHODS: One-week-old piglets (n = 41) were assigned to 5 treatment groups. Thirty-eight were placed on cardiopulmonary bypass. Of these, 30 were cooled to 18°C and underwent deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (n = 10), underwent selective antegrade cerebral perfusion at 10 mL/kg/min (n = 10), or remained on continuous cardiopulmonary bypass (deep hypothermic cardiopulmonary

Characterization of aqueous phase from the hydrothermal liquefaction of Chlorella pyrenoidosa.

This study investigated the characteristics of aqueous phase from hydrothermal liquefaction of low-lipid microalgae Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The interactions of operating conditions, including reaction temperature, retention time and total solid ratio were evaluated by response surface methodology. The chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were selected as indicators of the property of AP. Results indicated that total solid ratio was found to be the dominant factor affecting the nutrient recovery efficiencies of AP. Based on energy recovery, GC-MS indicated that the AP at t

Continuous aerobic granular sludge activated by a contracted final settler and associated hydraulic measures.

A contracted & baffled final settler, with a low H (height)/D (diameter) ratio and a high hydraulic selective pressure (HSP) imposed by elevating up-flow velocity by influent or effluent, was applied to promote in-situ granulation in a continuous biological nutrient removal (BNR) process. Under observational HSPobs = 0.9-3.2 m3/(m2·h), baffles could retain potential granules, and wash out flocs via 4-5 times higher up-flow velocity through baffle gaps. Continuous granulation was efficient within 44 d (HSPobs = 0.9-1.9 m3/m2·h): granulation increased to 42%, and SVI30 decreased to 52 mL/g from

Challenges and contribution of electrochemical driven by-products in tannery wastewater treatment: Optimization, detection and distribution of reactive oxidation species.

Electrochemical oxidation (EO) is an excellent approach for the treatment of persistent pollutant from synthesistic and real wastewater than conventional wastewater treatment processes. Chloride and sulfate salts generally used and present in natural wastewater that affect the EO process. In this research, the effect of electrolyte concentration on active sulfate (SO42⁻) species (HSO4⁻, SO4•⁻ and S2O82⁻) formation, chlorinated by-products distribution (ClO4-, ClO3-, Cl2), and tannery effluent degradation have been examined while using graphite electrodes. A full factorial design was used to op

Effects of different substrate ratios on the enrichment of anammox bacteria at low substrate concentration.

Anammox bacteria (AnAOB) can be easily enriched under high temperatures and high substrate concentrations, while the application of the mainstream anammox process in low substrate municipal sewage is still relatively uncommon. Therefore, this study investigated the enrichment of AnAOB under conditions of low ammonia nitrogen and nitrite concentration at 25 °C. Results showed that using inoculated aerobic sludge, four ASBRs (R1, R2, R3 and R4) were successfully initiated with different influent substrate (NO2--N/NH4+-N) ratios of 1.2, 1.32, 1.4 and 1.5, respectively, with reactor start-up times

Enhanced hydrolysis of waste activated sludge and recovery of volatile fatty acids: Performance and mechanistic analysis of synergistic treatment with sodium citrate and calcium oxide.

Anaerobic fermentation has emerged as a promising method of transforming waste activated sludge into high-value products (e.g., volatile fatty acids (VFAs)). This work developed sodium citrate (SC)-calcium oxide (CaO) pretreatment to accelerate the production of VFAs by enhancing sludge solubilization and disintegration of extracellular polymeric substances. The results showed that co-pretreatment with 0.25 g/g TSS of SC and 0.05 g/g TSS of CaO effectively boosted VFAs accumulation (5823.3 mg COD/L), which was 12.2 times higher than the Control group. SC-CaO pretreatment enhanced hydrolysis an

Achieving enhanced denitrification via hydrocyclone treatment on mixed liquor recirculation in the anoxic/aerobic process.

This work presents the novel application of hydrocyclones for mixed liquor recirculation (MLR) treatment in the anoxic/aerobic (A/O) process to enhance the denitrification process. An exhaustive investigation on treated activated sludge and A/O effluents was conducted in batch and continuous operation tests. The median diameter of the sludge flocs was decreased from 78.82 μm to 15.77-23.31 μm, and the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) desorption was observed, thus leading to the release of the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD). A marked increase in the BOD5/TN ratio was consequently

Oxygen Demand of Fresh and Stored Sulfide Solutions and Sulfide-Rich Constructed Wetland Effluent.

This study investigated the contribution of hydrogen sulfide to biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater effluents, and documented the effect of storage times and conditions on the BOD5 and COD of pH-adjusted sodium sulfide solutions as well as graywater wetland effluent. Initial COD measurements of sulfide solutions were 84-89% of the theoretical oxygen demand (ThOD), 1.996 mg O2/mg S, whereas unseeded BOD5 measurements were 55-77%. For sulfide solutions, all storage conditions led to declines of >15% (COD, BOD5), and >31% (sulfide). For wetland effluent,

Effects of Cr(VI) on the performance and kinetics of the activated sludge process.

The substrates removal performance, removal kinetics and the electron transport system (ETS) of sludge were investigated by sequencing batch reactors (SBR) and batch assays, respectively. Compared to the control system, significant decreases were observed in substrate removal efficiency with the Cr(VI)-feeding concentration up to 5 mg L(-1) in SBR system. And the recovery for NH4+-N removal were more difficult than that of COD after the termination of Cr(VI)-feeding. Significant inhibitory effects of Cr(VI) on the ETS activity and substrate removal kinetics were observed in the batch assays. T

Treatment and potential reuse of greywater from schools: a pilot study.

This study presented performance data on a low cost and easy maintenance pilot system for on-site treatment and reuse of water collected from wash sinks and fountains, as major sources of greywater (GW) at schools. Various treatment options were studied including screening, sand filtration, chlorination, and UV disinfection operated at different flow rates. Results showed that filtration operated at low rates is very effective in total suspended solids (TSS) removal, while UV proved to be more effective than chlorination for reduction of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand

Accelerated algal-bacterial granulation through synergistic physical-ionic stimulation: start-up efficiency and mechanistic insights.

Algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) represents a sustainable paradigm for carbon-neutral wastewater treatment, yet its industrial deployment is severely bottlenecked by the protracted granulation period and the inherent structural instability of fledgling aggregates. Existing enhancement strategies, primarily relying on single-factor interventions or exogenous additives, often struggle to achieve a cost-effective balance between rapid start-up and long-term structural robustness. Herein, we demonstrate that coupling a weak static magnetic field (SMF, 5 mT) with Mg2+ substantially accelerate
