Real-time gesture mapping system for a 15-DOF palm-scale bionic manipulator.

In this paper, a low-cost, high-precision, high-degree-of-freedom intelligent manipulator was developed. Specifically, a 15-DOF palm-scale bionic manipulator integrated with a vision-based gesture mapping framework is presented. The system consists of a power management module, palm module, joint module, and gesture recognition module, and can be controlled via smart devices. Experimental results demonstrate gesture-driven control with an average end-to-end response time of approximately 2s, including perception, communication, and execution delays. In addition, the system is lightweight and c

Robust bionic distributed multimodal flexible sensor for extreme-condition sensing and intelligent operation.

Traditional multimodal flexible sensors struggle with system integration, limited node scalability, and overall robustness, posing multiple critical challenges. Inspired by the tiger-shark scalp, we present BDMFS, a robust bionic distributed multimodal flexible sensor, integrating an S-shaped optical network mimicking subcutaneous mechanoreceptors with a self-powered triboelectric interface emulating ampullae-based proximity sensing. A microstructured elastic dielectric layer serves as both optical substrate and triboelectric layer, providing exceptional flexibility, mechanical robustness, and

Multi-functional bionic nanoparticles for precise neuronal targeting and synergistic therapy in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by core pathological mechanisms including amyloid-β plaque aggregation, cholinergic dysfunction, and neuronal apoptosis. Given the complex interplay of these pathways, combination therapies are emerging as more effective strategies than single-target approaches. The success of such therapies depends on rational target selection and optimal regimen design. Herein, we developed a multifunctional biomimetic nanocarrier, B6/Tet1-RBCm-NPs (BTRN), for precise neuron-targeted combination therapy. The nanoparticles (NPs) core was fabricated using safe, biocomp

Fabrication of a Bionic Superhydrophobic Surface with Photothermal and Electrothermal Performance for All-Weather Anti-Icing.

All-weather anti-icing/deicing materials with photothermal and electrothermal functionalities are of substantial significance to solve the problem of ice accumulation. In this work, polypropylene with bionic rose petal micro-/nanostructures and conductive carbon black (CB) (Bionic PP/CB) is fabricated by a template method. The template is obtained by replicating fresh rose petals with phenolic resin and spraying conductive CB. The contact angle of Bionic PP/CB is up to 162.5°, and the rolling angle is as low as 2.5°. The superhydrophobicity of Bionic PP/CB is theoretically analyzed by calculat

Bionic Perception of Surface Adhesion via a Magnetized Spring-like Sensor with Axial Stretchability.

Perception of surface adhesion is one essential capability of a human fingertip, which is normally realized by touching the target surface with subsequent skin vibrations. However, such functionality is difficult to realize in flexible sensors and robotic systems due to the challenges in axial stretchability with reliable electrical feedback. In this study, we developed a bionic three-dimensional flexible magnetized spring (3D-FMS) that can quantitatively recognize surface adhesion based on electromagnetic induction. Combined with the laser processing with predefined patterns, we show that a r

Thermosensitive polygalacturonic acid glycoprotein hydrogel encapsulating bionic shikonin nanoparticles for the treatment of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is histopathologically characterized by hyperproliferation of keratinocytes, loss of the granular layer, and elongation and thickening of the rete ridges in the epidermis. The thickening of the stratum corneum in psoriatic skin poses a significant barrier to effective drug delivery, as many therapeutic agents with poor solubility, limited release, and side effects struggle to penetrate the skin and achieve prolonged retention, thereby limiting their therapeutic efficacy. To address these challenges, we developed a non-invasive transdermal delivery system. In this system, biomimetic s

A Bionic Thermosensitive Sustainable Delivery System for Reversing the Progression of Osteoarthritis by Remodeling the Joint Homeostasis.

Although the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA) is unclear, inflammatory cytokines are related to its occurrence. However, few studies focused on the therapeutic strategies of regulating joint homeostasis by simultaneously remodeling the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory microenvironments. Fibroblast growth factor 18 (FGF18) is the only disease-modifying OA drug (DMOAD) with a potent ability and high efficiency in maintaining the phenotype of chondrocytes within cell culture models. However, its potential role in the immune microenvironment remains unknown. Besides, information on an opt

Stripping mechanism and Gaussian distribution model of a concave bionic comb for stripping prior to cutting.

Stripping prior to cutting is a harvesting technique that only strips rice grains and obtains complete straws. This paper aims to solve the problems of high loss rate and short throwing distance for stripping prior to cutting. A concave bionic comb was developed based on the filiform papilla structure on the surface of a cattle tongue tip. The mechanism analysis and comparative research of the flat comb and the bionic comb were carried out. The results showed that when the arc radius was 5.0 mm, the magnification ratio of filiform papilla was 4.0, and the concave angle was 60°, the loss rate o

Biomechanical Properties of Bionic Collum Femoris Preserving Hip Prosthesis: A Finite Element Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with total hip replacement, conventional collum femoris preserving prosthesis has a better bone retention effect. However, damage to the trabecular bone of the proximal femur leads to inevitable abnormal stress distribution, which leads to increased risks of femoral neck bone absorption, periprosthetic fracture, prosthesis loosening, rotation, and sinking. Thus, we compare the biomechanical properties of collum femoris preserving (CFP) and bionic collum femoris preserving (BCFP) hip prostheses. METHODS: The Sawbone digital model (#3503, left, medium) was selected as the re

Bionic reconstruction of tension trabeculae in short-stem hip arthroplasty: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Short-stem hip arthroplasty (SHA) is characterized by metaphyseal load transfer that effectively preserves the bone stock, but still suffers from stress shielding in the proximal femur. We designed a tension screw to mimic tension trabeculae in the new bionic collum femoris preserving (BCFP) short stem for bionic reconstruction, aiming to restore the biomechanics of hip joint. METHODS: Native femur finite element model was constructed to investigate the biomechanics of hip joint based on computed tomography (CT) data. The maximum absolute principal stress/strain cloud chart allowe

Bionic Anti-Slipping Crimping Structure for Industrial Hose Assembly Inspired by Ruminant Molars.

It is highly desirable to improve the anti-slipping stability of the crimping structure for a reliable connection. This study innovatively presents a biomimetic strategy for designing a high-performance crimping structure for industrial hose assembly based on evidence that the special infundibulum dentis structure on the occlusal surface of ruminant molars has the potential of anti-slippage and can also reduce the risk of stress concentration. Utilizing reverse engineering technology, the three-dimensional (3D) digital model of the bovine molar was built as a representative prototype, and then

Neuromusculoskeletal Arm Prostheses: Personal and Social Implications of Living With an Intimately Integrated Bionic Arm.

People with limb loss are for the first time living chronically and uninterruptedly with intimately integrated neuromusculoskeletal prostheses. This new generation of artificial limbs are fixated to the skeleton and operated by bidirectionally transferred neural information. This unprecedented level of human-machine integration is bound to have profound psychosocial effects on the individuals living with these prostheses. Here, we examined the psychosociological impact on people as they integrate neuromusculoskeletal prostheses into their bodies and lives. Three people with transhumeral amputa

Relationships among objective measures and speech perception in adult users of the HiResolution Bionic Ear.

The purpose of this study was to describe speech recognition performance for subjects using electrically evoked stapedial reflex thresholds (eSRT) based on programs with the HiResolution Bionic Ear system. A secondary goal was to evaluate the relationship of the electrically evoked compound action potentials (eCAP) as measured with neural response imaging (NRI) relative to the subjects' most comfortable stimulation levels (M levels). M levels, eSRT and eCAP thresholds were measured in 19 postlinguistically deafened adults using either a CII or HiRes 90K cochlear implant. The results showed tha

Te/Si Mixed-Dimensional van der Waals Heterojunction for Artificial Bionic Visual Devices.

By integrating visual adaptative devices into machine vision systems, circuits and algorithms can be more efficiently implemented, enabling adaptability and perception of images under variable light conditions. Nevertheless, this is constrained by a prolonged adaptation process. Here, 2D Te/3D Si mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction is fabricated with the pyroelectric effect, exhibiting broadband detection (254 to 1680 nm) and a fast response time (200 μs). It is possible to create an adaptative machine vision system with remarkably fast adaptation at the microsecond level. In this w

A bionic robotic trunk with tensegrity-enabled elephant-comparable stiffness variability for assisted daily living.

Elephant trunks can rapidly vary their stiffness over a broad range, seamlessly switching between soft states for dexterous operation and rigid states for load-bearing tasks. Despite extensive efforts to mimic this stiffness variability using various approaches, such as jamming structures and phase-change materials, existing bionic robots are limited to narrow tunable stiffness ranges and/or slow switching frequencies. In this work, we present a bionic robotic trunk with a cable-driven tensegrity skeleton, leveraging synergistic and antagonistic muscle-mimicking mechanisms to achieve dynamic s

A Pollen-Enhanced Bionic Mechanoreceptor Induced by Asymmetric Ionic Convection in Hydrogel for Sensory-Augmented Prostheses.

The growing prevalence of age-related limb loss underscores the need for prosthetic technologies that restore not only motor function but also authentic sensory feedback. Current prosthetic systems largely depend on sensory substitution or signal remapping, which fall short of replicating natural somatosensory signals. In this work, we develop a plant-enhanced bionic mechanoreceptor that mimics biological touch by converting mechanical stimuli into ionic signals. Incorporating bio-derived pollen microgels into the hydrogel matrix introduces interfacial ion-anchoring sites that strengthen catio

Design and mechanical damage behavior of radially gradient-controllable Ti6Al4V bionic porous bone scaffolds.

Inspired by the striking structural resemblance between trabecular bone microarchitecture and the dendritic branching morphology, we propose a novel biomimetic bone scaffold design strategy that replicates tree-derived fractal architecture. Four distinct fractal-structured porous scaffolds were fabricated via Selective Laser MeltingSLM 3D printing technology using Ti6Al4V alloy. The porosity distribution, damage mode, and mechanical properties of these scaffolds were systematically investigated. Through systematic modulation of fractal dimension and branching parameters, biomimetic bone scaffo
