BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements of ganglion cell + inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thicknesses are associated with visual function (VF) and disability in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the value of measuring Bruch membrane opening-minimum rim width (BMO-MRW) thickness in MS remains unclear.
METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with MS and 22 healthy controls (HCs) underwent spectral domain OCT, 100%-contrast visual acuity (VA), 2.5%- and 1.25%-contrast letter acuity (LA), and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) test

Background Glaucoma results in optic neuropathy, which is irreversible but can be treated effectively when diagnosed early. Several diagnostic parameters have been used to detect the functional and structural damage in glaucoma, which may go hand in hand or precede each other. Therefore, studying the functional and structural changes together may effectively improve the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnosis. In this study, we aim to compare Bruch's membrane opening-minimum rim width (BMO-MRW) and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) and assess their role in the diagnosis and prog

The retinal G protein-coupled receptor (RGR) is a visual cycle photoisomerase that photopically regenerates 11-cis-retinal (11cRAL). It plays a crucial role in sustaining vision. Here, we investigated the in vivo role of RGR in the cone photoreceptor-dominant, zebrafish retina, focusing predominantly on how visual function is impacted in the absence of RGR. There are two zebrafish RGR paralogs, rgra and rgrb, both with predominant expression in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and Müller glia cells. Under standard light rearing conditions, bespoke rgrb-/-; rgra-/- double knockout zebrafish pre

BACKGROUND: Traditional methods for neuroretinal rim width measurement in spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) employs the Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) as the anatomical border of the rim, referenced to a BMO horizontal reference plane, termed as "Bruch's Membrane Opening-Horizontal Rim Width" (BMO-HRW). BMO-HRW is defined as the distance between BMO and internal limiting membrane (ILM) on the horizontal plane. In contrast, the Spectralis OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Germany) employs a new parameter called "Bruch's Membrane Opening-Minimum Rim Width" (BMO-MRW) with Glaucoma

We have conducted an immunocytochemical study of fibronectin, laminin, heparan sulfate proteoglycans and nidogen-entactin during lens and neural retina regeneration in the adult newt from 0 to 60 days. In the normal eye, fibronectin was detected in the corneal stroma and Descemet's membrane, in dorsal and ventral irises and lens capsule but not in Bowman's membrane of the cornea. In normal neural retina, fibronectin was found in Bruch's and inner limiting membranes. Heparan sulfate proteoglycans gave a slight signal in both irises and the lens capsule. Nidogen-entactin distribution in the corn

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of the absence of the retinal pigment epithelium on the choriocapillaris and outer retina by performing retinal pigment epithelial cell debridement with mitomycin C to inhibit cell proliferation pharmacologically in the porcine eye.
METHODS: A pars plana vitrectomy was performed in 12 eyes, and two neurosensory retinal detachments per eye were created by injecting 10(-3) mg/ml mitomycin C and 0.25% edetic acid into the subretinal space. Twenty minutes later, the retinal pigment epithelium was debrided, and the retina was reattached with a fluid-gas exchange.

The wall of the eye consists of three layers: the sclera (the outermost layer), the choroid (the middle layer), and the retina (the innermost layer). In between choroid and retina, Bruch's membrane can be found. Each of these layers has specific characteristics and can be subdivided into different layers. In this chapter, retina, Bruch's membrane, and choroid will be detailed.
