Experiences of academic and professional burn-out in medical students and residents during first COVID-19 lockdown in Belgium: a mixed-method survey.

COVID-19 has presented a substantial burden on students and healthcare staff. This mixed-method, descriptive and correlational study aimed to: 1) describe academic; and 2) professional burnout levels; 3) their associations with working in COVID-19-related care; and 4) with perceived COVID-19 impact on studies and internships among medical students and residents. We hypothesized burnout levels to be high; those involved in COVID-19 care to experience higher impact of COVID-19 on studies and work, and to experience higher levels of academic and professional burnout than those not involved in COV

An Intensive Longitudinal Assessment Approach to Surveilling Trajectories of Burnout over the First Year of the COVID Pandemic.

Frontline clinicians responding to the COVID-19 pandemic are at increased risk of burnout, but less is known about the trajectory of clinician burnout as caseloads increase and decrease. Personal and professional resources, including self-efficacy and hospital support, can attenuate the risk of burnout. Yet, empirical data documenting how burnout and resources changed as the pandemic waxed and waned are limited. This intensive longitudinal prospective study employed ecological momentary assessment methods to examine trajectories of burnout and resources over the pandemic's first year in a New

Factors Associated with Burnout among Resident Physicians Responding to the COVID-19 Pandemic: A 2-Month Longitudinal Observation Study.

BACKGROUND: Burnout during residency may be a function of intense professional demands and poor work/life balance. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, NYC hospital systems were quickly overwhelmed, and trainees were required to perform beyond the usual clinical duties with less supervision and limited education. OBJECTIVE: The present longitudinal study examined the effects of COVID-19 caseload over time on burnout experienced by resident physicians and explored the effects of demographic characteristics and organizational and personal factors as predictors of burnout severity. METHODS:

Does Foodservice Employees' Burnout Influence Their In-role and Extra-role Food Safety Behaviors? A Structural Modeling Approach.

Over the past decade, a number of previous studies have found a gap between employees' food safety knowledge and their food safety behavior. Thus, it is valuable to examine motivators (or demotivators) of employees' food safety behavior from a psychological perspective. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationships among employees' burnout, job commitment, and food safety behaviors (in-role and extra-role). A total of 267 nonmanagerial restaurant employees participated in this study. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Findings reveal that colleag

[Elements for a sociohistory of parental burn-out].

The very recent concept of parental burn-out is defined as the result of an imbalance between parental stressors and the resources to overcome them, but its origins cannot be explained by the sole historical renegotiation of this tension. Other dynamics  -  scientific, socio-political or cultural  -  need to be understood in order to gain a better understanding of the socio-historical dimensions underlying parental exhaustion as it appears today.

The effect of profession on burnout in hospital staff.

BACKGROUND: A high level of burnout has been described in health professionals. However, literature regarding other hospital employees is scarce. AIMS: To assess the prevalence of burnout in different professional groups of hospital staff and how the professional category is associated with levels of burnout. METHODS: Employees of a University Hospital in Portugal completed a self-administered online questionnaire in 2014-2015. We used the Portuguese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey and scored three dimensions of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization,

Improving the Health of Governance: Identifying and Addressing Burnout Among Public Health Association Board Members.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused stress and burnout for governmental public health workers, negatively affecting workers' desire to remain in their professional role. In October 2022, a board for a national association assessed their professional development needs, identified manifestations of burnout, and generated strategies to address burnout. Of 21 board members invited, 16 (76%) responded. Quantitative items were summarized using descriptive analysis. Open-ended responses were summarized with thematic analysis. Board members identified balance between private and professional lives to optimiz

Burnout in gastrenterologists: a national-level analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The term burn-out or burnout, means 'burn to exhaustion', this term was first used by Herbert Freundenberg. According to Freundenberg, burnout is a 'state of physical and mental exhaustion conditioned by the individual's professional activity'. That is manifested through a set of signs and symptoms associated with physical and emotional breakdown that result from total energy exhaustion and the lack of resources or forces to 'help' others. OBJECTIVES: Assess the occurrence of burnout in Portuguese gastroenterologists and understand how certain sociodemographic and professional v

Neurofeedback as an intervention in the management of burnout: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is highly prevalent and impacts health and well-being. A lack of formal diagnosis and definition criteria has resulted in uncertainty regarding measurement and appropriate interventions. Neurofeedback (NF) training has shown potential in modulating patterns of stress and producing neural changes, however, its application to burnout is still in question. AIMS: This systematic review aimed to explore the impact of NF training on the management of burnout. METHODS: This systematic review was pre-registered on PROSPERO and adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systemat

The impact of illegitimate tasks on burnout syndrome in a healthcare system: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Burnout syndrome, characterized by physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion due to continuous exposure to high-stress work conditions, has been increasingly recognized as a serious occupational phenomenon, especially amongst healthcare professionals. Recent studies indicate that illegitimate tasks-activities unrelated to one's role are a significant factor contributing to burnout. However, given the variability of work environments across regions, these findings may not apply universally. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the behavior of the relationship between burnout and illegitimate

Examining aspects of job satisfaction associated with burnout and factors related to turnover intention in genetic counselors.

Burnout arises from prolonged work-related stress, leading to a chronic state of exhaustion, cynicism, and diminished professional efficacy. Previous studies have shown that ~50% of genetic counselors (GCs) experience burnout. This has negative implications for the GCs themselves, their employers, and patient care. Research in other healthcare professions has found a negative correlation between burnout and job satisfaction and a positive correlation between burnout and turnover intention. To investigate aspects of job satisfaction associated with burnout and aspects of burnout associated with

Bolstering wellbeing and mitigating burnout in critical care: a mixed-methods exploration.

PURPOSE: The COVID-19 pandemic placed unprecedented demands on critical care clinicians, exacerbating preexisting burnout concerns. Burnout affects clinicians, their patients, and the broader health care system, with evidence suggesting differential impacts across disciplines. In this study, we sought to examine burnout dimensions among critical care clinicians in Alberta, Canada and explore factors that supported their wellbeing or prevented burnout. METHODS: We used a convergent parallel mixed-methods study design, collecting qualitative and quantitative data within the same survey. The sur
