Chemical composition and synergistic effect of three Moroccan lavender EOs with ciprofloxacin against foodborne bacteria: a promising approach to modulate antimicrobial resistance.

The aim of this study was to determine the chemical profile of the essential oils (EOs) of three Moroccan lavender species (Lavandula pedunculata, LP; Lavandula angustifolia, LA; and Lavandula maroccana, LM) and to investigate, for the first time, the synergistic effect of the optimal mixture of the EOs with conventional antibiotic ciprofloxacin against three pathogenic foodborne bacteria. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis showed that eucalyptol (39·05%), camphor (24·21%) and borneol (8·29%) were the dominant compounds of LA-EO. LP-EO was characterized by the abundance of camphor (

Essential oils of spontaneous species of the genus Lavandula from Portugal: a brief review.

Spontaneous lavender growing in uncultivated fields in Portugal have been used in traditional medicine for internal and external uses. The essential oils (EOs) of Lavandula stoechas subsp. luisieri are characterized by the presence of trans-α-necrodyl acetate and trans-necrodol. These EOs are able to prevent the generation and deposition of neurotoxic β-amyloid peptide in Alzheimer's disease. The EOs also present antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-Leishmania, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antifeedant effects. In the case of hydrodistillation, the predominant compound of Lavandula viridis EO

Reductive dehalogenation by cytochrome P450CAM: substrate binding and catalysis.

Biological reductive dehalogenation reactions are important in environmental detoxification of organohalides. Only scarce information is available on the enzymology underlying these reactions. Cytochrome P450CAM with a known X-ray structure and well-studied oxygenase reaction cycle, has been studied for its ability to reduce carbon-halogen bonds under anaerobic conditions. The reductive reactions functioned with NADH and the physiological electron-transfer proteins or by using artificial electron donors to reduce cytochrome P450CAM. Halogenated methane and ethane substrates were transformed by

Small doses, big problems: a selected review of highly toxic common medications.

Many commonly used medications have serious toxicity in children when ingested in small doses. The toxicologic characteristics of methyl salicylate, camphor, topical imidazolines, benzocaine, and diphenoxylate-atropine are striking examples. All of these medications except Lomotil are over-the-counter and therefore, are often perceived as minimally harmful when ingested. For all of these substances, however, doses as little as 1/4 teaspoon or 1/2 tablet can have serious or fatal consequences. Thus, referral to an emergency department is prudent for ingestions involving these products. Options

Effects of monoterpenes on mortality, growth, fecundity, and ovarian development of Bactrocera zonata (Saunders) (Diptera: Tephritidae).

The peach fruit fly (PFF), Bactrocera zonata, is a serious insect pest infesting fruits and vegetables. The insecticidal activity of three monoterpenes, namely, (R)-camphor, (R)-carvone, and (1R,2S,5R)-menthol, was evaluated on the second-instar larvae of B. zonata. In addition, the latent effects of monoterpenes on pupation, adult emergence, deformation, oviposition, adult longevity, and ovarian development were also examined. The three tested monoterpenes showed pronounced insecticidal activity against B. zonata larvae with (R)-carvone being the most potent toxicant. When the second-instar l

Triple-Olfactory Mechanism Synergy: Development of a Long-Lasting DEET-Botanical Composite Repellent Against Aedes albopictus.

Mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika, continue to pose a substantial global public health challenge. This is largely attributable to the absence of effective vaccines and the expanding distribution of vectors such as Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus). Repellents, therefore, remain a critical component of prevention strategies for disease prevention. However, existing formulations have notable limitations. Synthetic repellents such as DEET provide broad-spectrum efficacy but may raise safety concerns, especially at high concentrations. In contrast, botanical re

Foliar Application of Biostimulants Reprograms Antioxidants and Molecular Networks of Wheat Plants Grown in Saline-Alkali Environments.

Saline-alkali stress severely impairs plant growth by disrupting osmotic balance, inducing oxidative damage, and suppressing metabolic processes. This study investigates the efficacy of biostimulants including Trametes odorata extract (TOE), camphor, and xanthine, in mitigating Na2CO3-induced stress in wheat plants. Wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Sakha 95) was grown under controlled conditions, with saline-alkali stress (100 mM Na2CO3) and weekly foliar treatments applied. After 60 days, comprehensive growth, biochemical, and molecular assessments were conducted. TOE exhibited a rich phytochemic

L-Borneolum Attenuates Ischemic Stroke Through Remodeling BBB Transporter Function via Regulating MFSD2A/Cav-1 Signaling Pathway.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares the brain protective effects of L-borneolum and its main components (a combined application of L-borneol and L-camphor) on the rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R). It also makes clear the intrinsic regulatory mechanisms that link the neuroprotective effects of these compounds on IS to the blood-brain barrier (BBB), based on network pharmacology predictions. Furthermore, the study investigates the relationship between these compounds and the Major Facilitator Superfamily Domain-containing Protein 2A (MFSD2A)/Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) signal

[Febrile convulsions: should some drugs be contraindicated?].

Should certain drugs be contraindicated in children who have had febrile seizures or who present a risk of convulsions? There are no publications dealing specifically with this problem. However, many drugs can induce convulsions and may be dangerous if they are associated with another determining factor (e.g. fever). Camphor known to be toxic and its use must be avoided in young children. Other terpenes given to children with colds may be convulsant if they are used for prolonged treatment or associated with other convulsant drugs (sympathomimetics, piperazine derivatives, antihistamines, etc.
