Longitudinal relationships among cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, cerebral blood flow, and grey matter volume in individuals with a familial history of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex disease that involves complex interactions between protein biomarkers such as amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau, neurodegeneration, cerebrovascular health and inflammation. However, how these factors interact, especially in the early phases of disease development remain unclear. To address this, this study analyzed four-year longitudinal data from 110 cognitively unimpaired older adults with a family history of AD in the PreventAD cohort. We investigated relationships between CSF Aβ, 181-phosphorylated tau (p-tau), interleukin-8 (IL-8), cerebral blood flow (CBF),

Correlation of MR relative cerebral blood volume measurements with cellular density and proliferation in high-grade gliomas: an image-guided biopsy study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: As newer MR imaging techniques are used to assist with tumor grading, biopsy planning, and therapeutic response assessment, there is a need to relate the imaging characteristics to underlying pathologic processes. The aim of this study was to see how rCBV, a known marker of tumor vascularity, relates to cellular packing attenuation and cellular proliferation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients with histologically proved high-grade gliomas and 1 with a supratentorial PNET requiring an image-guided biopsy were recruited. Patients underwent a DSC study. The rCBV at the

Radiation-induced regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) changes in normal brain and low-grade astrocytomas: quantification and time and dose-dependent occurrence.

PURPOSE: New tumor-conformal radiation-treatment modalities have been established with the intention to spare normal tissue while maintaining or improving local tumor control. To document radiation-induced changes in normal brain and low-grade astrocytoma we measured regional cerebral blood volumes (rCBV) using a dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast-enhanced MR technique (DSC-MRI). We attempted to assess pretherapeutic rCBV values and time- and dose-dependent changes following radiotherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: For prospective and longitudinal assessment of rCBV in normal brain and low-

Intra-lesional spatial correlation of static and dynamic FET-PET parameters with MRI-based cerebral blood volume in patients with untreated glioma.

PURPOSE: 18F-fluorethyltyrosine-(FET)-PET and MRI-based relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) have both been used to characterize gliomas. Recently, inter-individual correlations between peak static FET-uptake and rCBV have been reported. Herein, we assess the local intra-lesional relation between FET-PET parameters and rCBV. METHODS: Thirty untreated glioma patients (27 high-grade) underwent simultaneous PET/MRI on a 3 T hybrid scanner obtaining structural and dynamic susceptibility contrast sequences. Static FET-uptake and dynamic FET-slope were correlated with rCBV within tumour hotspots a

Assessment of regional cerebral blood volume in acute human stroke by use of single-slice dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced MRI (DSC-MRI) in acute cerebral ischemia. METHODS: During bolus injection of gadolinium-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid, a series of rapid T2*-weighted images was recorded from one slice. Concentration-time curves and images of regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) were calculated from this data set. DSC-MRI, MR angiography, conventional spin-echo MRI (SE-MRI), and CT were performed in 11 patients within 6 hours after stroke onset and before thrombolytic or

Effect of different targeted tidal volumes during high-frequency oscillation with volume-targeted ventilation on cerebral blood flow velocity and cardiac output: study protocol for a randomised crossover study.

BACKGROUND: High frequency oscillation (HFO) is a lung protective ventilation strategy for newborn infants due to the small tidal volume delivery at fast frequencies, but has been associated with an increased risk of brain injury. High-frequency oscillation with volume-targeted ventilation (HFO&VTV) is a new mode of HFO that applies a targeted tidal volume (VThf) set by the clinician and achieves less fluctuations of carbon dioxide levels and therefore reduces the risk of brain injury. The optimal starting VThf values, however, have not been explored to date. This study investigates the optimu

Portable six-channel laser speckle system for simultaneous measurement of cerebral blood flow and volume with potential applications in characterization of brain injury.

SIGNIFICANCE: Cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) are key metrics for regional cerebrovascular monitoring. Simultaneous, non-invasive measurement of CBF and CBV at different brain locations would advance cerebrovascular monitoring and pave the way for brain injury detection as current brain injury diagnostic methods are often constrained by high costs, limited sensitivity, and reliance on subjective symptom reporting. AIM: We aim to develop a multi-channel non-invasive optical system for measuring CBF and CBV at different regions of the brain simultaneously with a cost-e

Influence of blood volume on cerebrospinal fluid levels of arachidonic acid metabolites after subarachnoid hemorrhage: experimental study on the pathogenesis of cerebral vasospasm.

Based on accumulating data indicating the important role of arachidonic acid metabolites in the pathogenesis of cerebral vasospasm, we examined the influence of alterations in blood volume on the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) level of the subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Three separate injections of autologous blood into the cisterna magna of dogs within subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Three separate injections of autologous blood into the cisterna magna of dogs within 72 hours were performed. Three experimental groups were formed, with an overall injected blood volume of 6, 9, and 12 ml. Arterial sp

T1-Weighted Contrast Enhancement, Apparent Diffusion Coefficient, and Cerebral-Blood-Volume Changes after Glioblastoma Resection: MRI within 48 Hours vs. beyond 48 Hours.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to identify the advantages, if any, of post-operative MRIs performed at 48 h compared to MRIs performed after 48 h in glioblastoma surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To assess the presence of a residual tumor, the T1-weighted Contrast Enhancement (CE), Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC), and Cerebral Blood Volume (rCBV) in the proximity of the surgical cavity were considered. The rCBV ratio was calculated by comparing the rCBV with the contralateral normal white matter. After the blind image examinations by the two radiologists, the patients were divided int

Cerebral blood volume increment after resuscitation measured by near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy can estimate degree of hypoxic-ischemic insult in newborn piglets.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a notable cause of neonatal death and developmental disabilities. To achieve better outcomes, it is important in treatment strategy selection to categorize the degree of hypoxia ischemia and evaluate dose response. In an asphyxia piglet model with histopathological brain injuries that we previously developed, animals survived 5 days after insult and showed changes in cerebral blood volume (CBV) that reflected the severity of injuries. However, little is known about the relationship between changes in CBV during and after insult. In this study, an HI

Effect of suture size and carotid clip application upon blood flow and infarct volume after permanent and temporary middle cerebral artery occlusion in mice.

Problems with the intraluminal suture method for induction of focal cerebral ischemia in genetically altered mice include occurrence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and variability of infarct volume. We hypothesized that use of 5-0 curved or 6-0 straight suture for carotid cannulation might decrease SAH and that the application of a microvascular clip to the common carotid artery (CCA) might decrease variability of infarct volume. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and explain the results of these technical modifications. Strain related differences in vascular anatomy were evaluated. Ma

Head-up tilt and hyperventilation produce similar changes in cerebral oxygenation and blood volume: an observational comparison study using frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy.

PURPOSE: During anesthesia, maneuvers which cause the least disturbance of cerebral oxygenation with the greatest decrease in intracranial pressure would be most beneficial to patients with intracranial hypertension. Both head-up tilt (HUT) and hyperventilation are used to decrease brain bulk, and both may be associated with decreases in cerebral oxygenation. In this observational study, our null hypothesis was that the impact of HUT and hyperventilation on cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO2) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) are comparable. METHODS: Surgical patients without neurological

Cerebral blood flow, blood volume, and mean transit time responses to propofol and indomethacin in peritumor and contralateral brain regions: perioperative perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in patients with brain tumors.

BACKGROUND: The regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) response to propofol and indomethacin may be abnormal in patients with brain tumors. First, the authors tested the hypothesis that during propofol anesthesia alone and combined with indomethacin, changes in CBF, cerebral blood volume (CBV), and plasma mean transit time (MTT) differ in the peritumoral tissue compared with the contralateral normal brain region. Second, the authors tested the hypothesis that CBF and CBV are reduced and MTT is prolonged, in both regions during propofol anesthesia and indomethacin administration compared with propo

Diagnostic performance of CT cerebral blood volume colour maps for evaluation of acute infarcts; comparison with diffusion-weighted MRI within 12hours of major stroke onset.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent developments in treatment of ischemic stroke increased importance of defining limits of ischemic insult by imaging. Some studies postulated that CTP is a promising technique, which can discriminate between ischemic core and penumbra. In this study, we sought to evaluate diagnostic performance of CTP-CBV colour maps, regarded as a marker of acute infarct; in comparison with DWI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 48 patients with CTA proved major ischemic stroke within 12hours of onset, they had DWI and CTP exams within 1hour of each other, regard

Hypervolemic hemodilution in experimental focal cerebral ischemia. Elevation of cardiac output, regional cortical blood flow, and ICP after intravascular volume expansion with low molecular weight dextran.

Cerebrovascular and cardiac alterations evoked by intravascular volume expansion with low molecular weight dextran (LMD, molecular weight 40,000), an advocated adjunct in the clinical prevention or therapy of acute stroke and cerebral vasospasm, were studied in splenectomized dogs. Clipping of the right distal internal carotid artery and the proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA) in eight dogs decreased regional cortical blood flow (rCoBF) by 58% without changing cardiac output (CO), and caused 10% +/- 5% (SE) hemispheric infarction. Ten other dogs underwent similar cerebral arterial occlusion

Differential Changes in Arteriolar Cerebral Blood Volume between Parkinson's Disease Patients with Normal and Impaired Cognition and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Patients without Movement Disorder - An Exploratory Study.

Cognitive impairment amongst Parkinson's disease (PD) patients is highly prevalent and associated with an increased risk of dementia. There is growing evidence that altered cerebrovascular functions contribute to cognitive impairment. Few studies have compared cerebrovascular changes in PD patients with normal and impaired cognition and those with mild-cognitive-impairment (MCI) without movement disorder. Here, we investigated arteriolar-cerebral-blood-volume (CBVa), an index reflecting the homeostasis of the most actively regulated segment in the microvasculature, using advanced MRI in variou
