Metabolic reconstruction and microbial network assembly immobilised heavy metals during soil function recovery in coal gangue.

Coal gangue stockpiling leads to considerable soil heavy metal contamination and ecological degradation. Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) exhibits strong phytoremediation potential; however, the mechanisms underlying heavy metal immobilisation during soil function recovery remains unclear. In this study, a spatiotemporal substitution method was applied to investigate soil heavy metal distribution, microbial communities, and metabolite profiles during a nine-year cultivation period of V. zizanioides in coal gangue. Long-term cultivation effectively immobilised heavy metals (Cr, Cu, and Zn), reduced t

Identification of microbial groups and functional genes associated with greenhouse gas emissions in prawn farms.

Understanding microbial associations with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is essential for promoting climate-friendly prawn production, yet it remains largely unexplored. To examine microbial-GHG relationships, this study analysed CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions, characterised microbial communities, and measured the abundances of key functional genes (mcrA, pmoA, amoA, and nosZ) in water and sediment from Bangladeshi prawn farms. Results showed that microbial richness was positively correlated with CO2 and N2O emissions but negatively with CH4 emissions. Methanogenic archaea, most abundant in high-

Enhanced tetracycline removal in sequencing batch reactors by bioaugmentation using tetX-carrying strains: Efficiency and mechanisms.

Tetracyclines antibiotics (TCs) pose notable environmental challenges due to their persistence in the effluent of wastewater treatment systems. Bioaugmentation offers a promising strategy for their removal, yet information is still very limited. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of bioaugmentation using wild-type (Sphingobacterium sp. WM1) and engineered tetX-carrying (PUC-tetX) strains for enhancing tetracycline (TC) removal in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Bioaugmentation mitigated TC's inhibitory effects on denitrification and phosphorus removal processes within SBR systems. Speci

Oyster Peptide-Zinc Complex Ameliorates Di-(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate-Induced Testis Injury in Male Mice and Improving Gut Microbiota.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer, which can cause damage to male reproductive organs, especially the atrophy of the testis. Meanwhile, DEHP can also lead to a decrease in testicular zinc content, but the role of zinc remains unclear. This study aims to prepare oyster peptide-zinc complex (OPZC) to alleviate DEHP-induced reproductive damage in mice. OPZC was successfully obtained through electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis, with stable structure and high water-solubility. Low dose oyster peptide-zinc complex (OPZCL) significantly

Halosulfuron methyl did not have a significant effect on diversity and community of sugarcane rhizosphere microflora.

Halosulfuron methyl (HM) is a new, highly active sulfonylurea herbicide that has been widely used for weed control in agricultural production. However, its potential ecological risks remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of different concentrations of HM on bacterial communities in sugarcane rhizospheric soil by using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. The half-life of HM for 130 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg, and 1300 mg/kg spraying concentrations were 6.64, 9.19, and 9.87 d, respectively. HM application did not alter the alpha or beta diversity of the soil bacterial community,

Marine mercury-methylating microbial communities from coastal to Capbreton Canyon sediments (North Atlantic Ocean).

Microbial mercury (Hg) methylation transforms inorganic mercury to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) mainly in aquatic anoxic environments. Sampling challenges in marine ecosystems, particularly in submarine canyons, leads to a lack of knowledge about the Hg methylating microbia in marine sediments. A previous study showed an enrichment of mercury species in sediments from the Capbreton Canyon where both geochemical parameters and microbial activities constrained the net MeHg production. In order to characterize Hg-methylating microbial communities from coastal to deeper sediments, we analysed t

Stratification of chlorinated ethenes natural attenuation in an alluvial aquifer assessed by hydrochemical and biomolecular tools.

Biomolecular and hydrochemical tools were used to evaluate natural attenuation of chlorinated ethenes in a Quaternary alluvial aquifer located close to a historical source of large-scale tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination. Distinct stratification of redox zones was observed, despite the aquifer's small thickness (2.8 m). The uppermost zone of the target aquifer was characterised by oxygen- and nitrate-reducing conditions, with mixed iron- to sulphate-reducing conditions dominant in the lower zone, along with indications of methanogenesis. Natural attenuation of PCE was strongly influenced

Pyrosequencing reveals microbial community dynamics in integrated simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification process at different influent nitrate concentrations.

Integrated simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification (ISDD) process has proven to be feasible for the coremoval of sulfate, nitrate, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). In this study, we aimed to reveal the microbial community dynamics in the ISDD process with different influent nitrate (NO3-) concentrations. For all tested scenarios, full denitrification was accomplished while sulfate removal efficiency decreased along with increased influent NO3- concentrations. The proportion of S0 to influent SO42- maintained a low level (5.6-17.0%) regardless of the increased influent NO3- concentrat

Abundant iron and sulfur oxidizers in the stratified sediment of a eutrophic freshwater reservoir with annual cyanobacterial blooms.

The microbial community in eutrophic freshwater sediment was investigated from a 67-cm-deep sediment core collected from the Daechung Reservoir in South Korea, where cyanobacterial blooms have occurred annually for the past 30 years. The majority of core sediments were characterized by dark-grayish, fine-grained mud with abundant gas-escaped and thinly laminated layers. Intervals of summer and winter seasons were represented by periodic peaks of geochemical profiles of parameters such as grain size and relative carbon mass ratios to various nutrients such as nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. Composting effect and antibiotic removal under a new temperature control strategy.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a new temperature control strategy in the co-composting process to accelerate operation cycle and remove antibiotics from mixed organic wastes. The evaluation of the composting process showed that composting with temperature control (TC) was completed within 14 days. The final compost of TC exhibited a 10% higher degradation of organic matters, more humus formation and 11.25% lower heavy metals concentration than conventional composting (CC), which fully met the Chinese National Agricultural Organic Fertilizer Standard requ

Spatial Variability of Microbial Communities and Salt Distributions Across a Latitudinal Aridity Gradient in the Atacama Desert.

Over the past 150 million years, the Chilean Atacama Desert has been transformed into one of the most inhospitable landscapes by geophysical changes, which makes it an ideal Mars analog that has been explored for decades. However, a heavy rainfall that occurred in the Atacama in 2017 provides a unique opportunity to study the response of resident extremophiles to rapid environmental change associated with excessive water and salt shock. Here we combine mineral/salt composition measurements, amendment cell culture experiments, and next-generation sequencing analyses to study the variations in s

Responses of Low-Quality Soil Microbial Community Structure and Activities to Application of a Mixed Material of Humic Acid, Biochar, and Super Absorbent Polymer.

Low-quality soil for land reuse is a crucial problem in vegetation quality and especially to waste disposal sites in mining areas. It is necessary to find suitable materials to improve the soil quality and especially to increase soil microbial diversity and activity. In this study, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of a mixed material of humic acid, super absorbent polymer and biochar on low-quality soil indexes and the microbial community response. The indexes included soil physicochemical properties and the corresponding plant growth. The results showed that the mixed

Complex Intratissue Microbiota Forms Biofilms in Periodontal Lesions.

Periodontitis is caused by dysbiotic subgingival bacterial communities that may lead to increased bacterial invasion into gingival tissues. Although shifts in community structures associated with transition from health to periodontitis have been well characterized, the nature of bacteria present within the gingival tissue of periodontal lesions is not known. To characterize microbiota within tissues of periodontal lesions and compare them with plaque microbiota, gingival tissues and subgingival plaques were obtained from 7 patients with chronic periodontitis. A sequencing analysis of the 16S r

Deciphering microbiomes in anaerobic reactors with superior trichloroethylene dechlorination performance at low pH conditions.

Different pH conditions have been demonstrated to affect the activities of dechlorinating populations participating in the successive dechlorination of trichloroethylene to ethylene. However, the mechanism of the effect of pH conditions on the assembly of dechlorinating populations and their relations to the structure, function, and dynamics of the microbiome are unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of pH on microbiomes assembled in anaerobic trichloroethylene-dechlorinating reactors under neutral (pH 7.2), acidic (pH 6.2), and alkaline (pH 8.2) conditions. The results revealed tha

Distribution of organohalide-respiring bacteria between solid and aqueous phases.

Contemporary microbial monitoring of aquifers relies on groundwater samples to enumerate nonattached cells of interest. One-dimensional column studies quantified the distribution of bacterial cells in solid and the aqueous phases as a function of microbial species, growth substrate availability and porous medium (i.e., Appling soil versus Federal Fine Ottawa sand with 0.75% and 0.01% [w/w] organic carbon, respectively). Without supplied growth substrates, effluent from columns inoculated with the tetrachloroethene- (PCE-) to-ethene-dechlorinating bacterial consortium BDI-SZ containing Dehaloco

3D-CSIA: carbon, chlorine, and hydrogen isotope fractionation in transformation of TCE to ethene by a Dehalococcoides culture.

Carbon (C), chlorine (Cl), and hydrogen (H) isotope effects were determined during dechlorination of TCE to ethene by a mixed Dehalococcoides (Dhc) culture. The C isotope effects for the dechlorination steps were consistent with data published in the past for reductive dechlorination (RD) by Dhc. The Cl effects (combined with an inverse H effect in TCE) suggested that dechlorination proceeded through nucleophilic reactions with cobalamin rather than by an electron transfer mechanism. Depletions of (37)Cl in daughter compounds, resulting from fractionation at positions away from the dechlorinat

Effects of varying growth conditions on stable carbon isotope fractionation of trichloroethene (TCE) by tceA-containing Dehalococcoides mccartyi strains.

To quantify in situ bioremediation using compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA), isotope fractionation data obtained from the field is interpreted according to laboratory-derived enrichment factors. Although previous studies that have quantified dynamic isotopic shifts during the reductive dechlorination of trichloroethene (TCE) indicate that fractionation factors can be highly variable from culture-to-culture and site-to-site, the effects of growth condition on the isotope fractionation during reductive dechlorination have not been previously examined. Here, carbon isotope fractionation by

[Effects of nitrate on organic removal and microbial community structure in the sediments].

The strategy promoted pollutant degradation and transformation under the anaerobic circumstance by adding nitrate as an electron acceptor has been widely used in sediment bioremediation. However, few literature reports on organic removal characteristics and microbial community responses in the contaminated river sediment under the nitrate reduction condition. Methods including the polar and non-polar chemical fractionation, relative abundance detection of organic matters by GC-MS were combined and applied to investigate organic removals and PCR-DGGE analysis was used for microbial community st

Real-time PCR quantification of Dehalococcoides populations: methods and applications.

Dehalococcoides species are responsible for the reductive dehalogenation of an impressive range of common, persistent environmental contaminants. These microorganisms are difficult to both obtain and grow in pure culture, and so are often studied while they exist in consortia using molecular techniques. In particular, a significant number of quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assays targeting Dehalococcoides spp. have been reported. Initial qPCR methods targeted the 16S rRNA gene, however, because strains with the same 16S rRNA gene sequence can have different dehalogenating abilities, reductiv

Revisiting the dihaloelimination potential of Dehalococcoides revealed by genomic and proteomic analyses.

UNLABELLED: Dehalococcoides (Dhc) has recently gained significant attention in microbial reductive dehalogenation due to its specialized ability to metabolize various halocarbons. While previous reports have documented Dhc-mediated dihaloelimination of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP), and 1,2-dibromoethane, this study reveals an expansion of Dhc's dihaloelimination substrate range. We successfully established PJDCA and PJTCA enrichment cultures from petroleum-contaminated soil, exhibiting dihaloelimination activity toward 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA), 1,2,3-tri
