PRF membrane vs. chorion membrane with coronally advanced flap: a clinical study on gingival recession.

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a second-generation platelet concentrate, accelerates soft and hard tissue regeneration. Chorion membrane, of fetal origin, has wound-modulating properties. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes of PRF and chorion membrane in treating isolated Miller's class I or II gingival recession defects. Fifty recession defects in 50 patients were randomly treated with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) and PRF membrane (site A, n = 25) or CAF with chorion membrane (site B, n = 25). Clinical parameters recorded at baseline, 1, 3, and 6 months included rec

Lyophilized Human Amnion Chorion Membrane (LHACM) Reduces Hypertrophic Scar Formation by Regulating TGFβ and Myofibroblasts.

BACKGROUND: We investigated whether a lyophilized human amnion chorion membrane (LHACM), with amnion, intermediate, and chorion layers, could alter or improve hypertrophic scarring. METHODS: We utilized our previously published murine model to create human-like hypertrophic scars by applying mechanical tension over a healing HTS (Hypertrophic scar) wound. Treatment with subcutaneous LHACM allograft was administered prior to wound closure. Scars were explanted on day 19; imaged after Hematoxylin & Eosin, Masson's Trichrome, Picrosirius Red, and immunofluorescent staining; and analyzed with Ima

Cost-effectiveness of dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane allografts in lower extremity diabetic ulcer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness and budget impact of using standard care (no advanced treatment, NAT) compared with an advanced treatment (AT), dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (DHACM), when following parameters for use (FPFU) in treating lower extremity diabetic ulcers (LEDUs). METHOD: We analysed a retrospective cohort of Medicare patients (2015-2019) to generate four propensity-matched cohorts of LEDU episodes. Outcomes for DHACM and NAT, such as amputations, and healthcare utilisation were tracked from claims codes, analysed and used to build a hybrid economic model,

Clinical Experience: Using Dehydrated Human Amnion/Chorion Membrane Allografts for Acute and Reconstructive Burn Care.

Amniotic membrane is immunologically privileged and is a reservoir of growth factors and cytokines known to modulate inflammation and enhance the healing process, while also possessing antimicrobial, antifibrosis, and antiscarring properties. These properties establish a strong argument for using amniotic membrane derived products as a treatment for burns. The purpose of this article is to describe the use of commercially available dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane allografts in patients with partial-thickness and full-thickness burns.

Pretreatment of human amnion-chorion with vitamins C and E prevents hypochlorous acid-induced damage.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm premature rupture of fetal membranes has been associated with infection, cigarette smoking, and bleeding. Hypochlorous acid (a reactive oxygen species) is central to the body's response to infection, yet it may damage surrounding tissue while destroying pathogens. We examined in vitro the tissue-damaging actions of hypochlorous acid on the amnion-chorion and the protective role provided by pretreatment with vitamins C and E. STUDY DESIGN: Amnion-chorion samples were obtained from 4 term pregnancies, cut into segments, and divided into 6 exposure groups. Half were treated in

Characterization of group B streptococcal invasion of human chorion and amnion epithelial cells In vitro.

Group B streptococci (GBS) have been cultured from the chorioamnionic membrane of pregnant women, usually in association with chorioamnionitis and premature labor (K. A. Boggess, D. H. Watts, S. L. Hillier, M. A. Krohn, T. J. Benedetti, and D. A. Eschenbach, Obstet. Gynecol. 87:779-784, 1996). Colonization and infection of placental membranes can be a prelude to neonatal GBS infections even in the presence of intact membranes (R. L. Naeye and E. C. Peters, Pediatrics 61:171-177, 1978), suggesting that GBS cause chorioamnionitis or establish amniotic fluid infections by partial or complete pene

Chronic idiopathic polyhydramnios: evidence for a defect in the chorion laeve receptor for lactogenic hormones.

Binding of human GH (hGH) to the lactogenic receptor of human chorion laeve has been compared in membrane preparations from normal pregnancies and those complicated by chronic idiopathic polyhydramnios. Specific binding of [125I]hGH was significantly lower (mean +/- SE, 1.64 +/- 0.28%; n = 5) in chronic idiopathic polyhydramnios than in normal pregnancies (2.93 +/- 0.4%; n = 16). Scatchard analysis data were consistent with a reduced lactogenic hormone receptor concentration being the explanation for this reduced hGH binding. By contrast, the specific binding of [125I]insulin to its receptor w

Pyoderma gangrenosum and dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane: a potential tool for an orphan disease.

OBJECTIVE: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is an often-misdiagnosed, painful, inflammatory and ulcerative skin disorder. It is an orphan disease, where standard wound treatments such as sharp surgical debridement are contraindicated. This retrospective case series sought to evaluate the application of dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (DHACM) as a skin substitute in cases that were refractory to a range of standard-of-care techniques. METHOD: This retrospective case series involved wounds which failed to close with standard escalating treatments, including anti-inflammatory and immunosuppres

Up-to-date role of the dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (AMNIOFIX) for wound healing.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic wounds pose a significant burden on patients, society, and the health-care setup. Higher costs, protracted clinical course, and increased risk of complications necessitate identifying novel treatment modalities that hasten healing and wound closure. AREAS COVERED: This article covers newer available treatment modalities for chronic wounds, namely the dehydrated amniotic membrane products, biological skin substitutes, and similar therapies aimed at the healing of chronic non-healing wounds. It presents product description for Amniofix (dehydrated human amniotic/chorionic

Function and failure of the fetal membrane: Modelling the mechanics of the chorion and amnion.

The fetal membrane surrounds the fetus during pregnancy and is a thin tissue composed of two layers, the chorion and the amnion. While rupture of this membrane normally occurs at term, preterm rupture can result in increased risk of fetal mortality and morbidity, as well as danger of infection in the mother. Although structural changes have been observed in the membrane in such cases, the mechanical behaviour of the human fetal membrane in vivo remains poorly understood and is challenging to investigate experimentally. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop simplified finite ele

Differences in permissive cytomegalovirus infection between primary cultured human fetal membrane chorion and amnion cells.

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common cause of viral intrauterine infection in developed countries. It has been shown that CMV DNA was frequently detected in the fetal membranes when the placenta was infected in utero. However, it is still not clear whether CMV replicates in constituent cells of the fetal membranes. We investigated CMV infection of primary cultured chorion and amnion cells prepared from human fetal membrane tissues. In both types of cell cultures, rounded cells were observed at day 8 and 12 after CMV inoculation, and virus yields in culture supernatants were increased

Chorion releases a factor that inhibits oxytocin-stimulated myometrial contractility in the pregnant guinea pig.

It was postulated that chorion releases a substance necessary for the maintenance of uterine quiescence during pregnancy. A decrease in the release of this substance at the end of the pregnancy would be necessary for normal myometrial activation. This hypothesis was tested by demonstrating the ability of chorion to inhibit oxytocin-stimulated myometrial contractility in vitro. Tissues were obtained from timed pregnant Duncan-Hartley guinea pigs either at pre-term or near-term gestation. Myometrial strips were placed in organ baths for isometric tension measurement and contractions stimulated b

Persistent foetal tachycardia as an early marker of chorion-amnionitis. Description of a clinical case.

Intra-amniotic infection (IAI) is uncommon in pregnancy (0.5-1%) and is rarely responsible for maternal mortality, but it does lead to a high rate of maternal and foetal morbidity, e.g. sepsis, septic shock, post-partum endometritis and neonatal sepsis. The diagnosis of IAI is immediate in the case of premature rupture of the membranes, whereas it is far more difficult to reach a correct and timely diagnosis when the amniotic sac is intact, as the mother's clinical symptoms are often scarce and non-specific. Foetal and maternal prognosis in IAI depends on the timely implementation of antibioti

Histomorphometric study of placental blood vessels of chorion and chorionic villi vascular area among women with preeclampsia.

INTRODUCTION: The direction of blood movement in normal and abnormal placenta is curious from a morphometric point of view. Once pregnancy is compromised by an illness like hypertension, maternal and foetal distress can lead to negative outcomes. The quantitative variations in the blood vessels within the chorion and the chorionic villi in placentas from pregnancies are complicated by preeclampsia (PE) and are poorly defined. The purpose of this study was to calculate and explore the morphometric measurement of blood vessels involved in the progress of hypertension through pregnancy within the

Adverse pregnancy outcome following post-chorionic villus sampling amniocentesis compared to chorionic villus sampling.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the adverse pregnancy outcome of post-chorionic villus sampling (CVS) amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling. METHODS: Adverse pregnancy outcomes of 32 post-CVS amniocentesis cases and 264 CVS only cases were compared. The base-line characteristics were comparable in the 2 groups. RESULTS: One (3.1%) chromosomal abnormality was detected in the post-CVS amniocentesis group, compared to 5 (1.8%) in the CVS only group (p > 0.05). The fetal loss rate (spontaneous abortions and stillbirths) among continuing pregnancies was 3.2% in the post-CVS amniocentesis group and 3.5

Investigations of chorionic villi after chorionic villus sampling (CVS). Correlation of morphological with clinical and laboratory data.

This report documents the first 262 cases of chorionic villus sampling (CVS) performed in parallel with cytogenetic and morphological investigations. Histomorphological examination of these CVS specimens gave suitable results in about 96% (251 cases). Of the latter, 201 samples (80.1%) exhibited villi and 176 (70.1%), maternal tissue. Viability and maturation of the chorionic villi were determined light microscopically even in cases with few villus trees. Smooth avascular villi with poorly defined margins observed under an inverted microscope, less than 10 mitoses after short-term incubation,
