Bactericidal effects of co-amoxiclav (amoxycillin clavulanic acid) against a Legionella pneumophila pneumonia in the immunocompromised weanling rat.

To evaluate the activity of co-amoxiclav (amoxycillin/clavulanic acid) against Legionella pneumophila in vivo, a model of L. pneumophila pneumonia was developed in weanling rats rendered leukopenic by pre-administration of cyclophosphamide. Assessment of therapy was by lung bacterial counts and histological examination. Amoxycillin was ineffective in reducing bacterial counts in the lungs of infected rats, whereas erythromycin, the standard agent, was significantly more effective (P < 0.01). Co-amoxiclav and erythromycin, administered parenterally, produced significant bactericidal effects (P

Influence of clavulanic acid on the activity of amoxicillin against an experimental Streptococcus pneumoniae-Staphylococcus aureus mixed respiratory infection.

An experimental respiratory infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae was established in weanling rats by intrabronchial instillation. Treatment of this infection with amoxicillin rapidly eliminated the pneumococci from the lung tissue. A beta-lactamase-producing strain of Staphylococcus aureus, when inoculated in a similar manner, did not persist adequately in the lungs long enough to permit a reasonable assessment of the therapy, but staphylococcal survival was extended in the lungs of rats infected 24 h previously with S. pneumoniae. Amoxicillin therapy was relatively ineffective against

Cefotaxime single-dose surgical prophylaxis in a prepaid group practice. Comparisons with other cephalosporins and ticarcillin/clavulanic acid.

The prophylactic efficacy of a single 1g dose of cefotaxime for a wide variety of clean and clean-contaminated surgical procedures was studied in a large prepaid medical practice setting. Regimens were evaluated in 3 successive prospective, randomised comparative trials involving 1950 evaluable patients between November 1983 and March 1986. Single-dose cefotaxime was initially compared with standard multiple-dose regimens of cephazolin and cefoxitin, and subsequently used as the control regimen for comparisons with single-dose cefoperazone and ticarcillin/clavulanic acid. Patients were observe

Comparative Adverse Event Reporting Patterns of Amoxicillin and Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid in FAERS: A 2022-2025 Disproportionality Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Amoxicillin, alone or combined with clavulanic acid, is widely used for the treatment of bacterial infections. While clavulanic acid expands amoxicillin's antibacterial spectrum by inhibiting β-lactamases, differences in their real-world safety profiles and reporting patterns remain relevant for pharmacovigilance and antimicrobial surveillance. This study aimed to characterize and compare adverse event reporting associated with amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and to explore reporting signals involving Preferred Terms potentially associated with reduced treatmen

The impact of aztreonam-clavulanic acid exposure on gene expression and mutant selection using a multidrug-resistant E. coli.

Multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli poses a significant threat to the healthcare system by causing treatment failure in infected patients. The use of a beta-lactam in combination with a beta-lactamase inhibitor has been shown to be an effective strategy to solve this problem. In vitro antimicrobial susceptibility experiments have demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of aztreonam and clavulanate. In this investigation, we conducted a transcriptomic analysis to reveal the downstream differential gene expression in E. coli ymmD45 (a strain newly isolated and found to carry the New Delhi metal

Changes in fecal microbiota after therapeutic exposure to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid in veal calves receiving multiple antibiotics.

Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (AMC) is an important antibiotic in human and veterinary medicine. However, it can select antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the gut microbiota and alter its composition. In calves, AMC can be used to treat complicated infections. The impact of AMC on the calves' gut is unknown; thus, we analyzed the effect of a five-day AMC treatment in veal calves suffering from omphalitis. AMC-treated calves (n = 15) and a control untreated group (n = 15) were enrolled from two farms. Stools were collected before AMC administration (D0), one day (D6), one month (D35), and two month

Successful treatment of two individual cases of generalized granuloma annulare with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and a combination of doxycycline and pentoxifylline.

Granuloma annulare is a benign inflammatory skin disease potentially related to a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the dermis. Generalized granuloma annulare (GGA) manifests as diffuse skin-colored to erythematous annular or nummular plaques affecting at least the trunk and either upper or lower extremities, or both. GGA is resistant to many therapeutic modalities, making it difficult to treat. Different therapeutic approaches to GGA have been attempted but definitive treatment for this disease remains elusive. This article focuses on the use of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and a combinatio

Cefixime-clavulanic acid in ESBL-producing E. coli lower urinary tract infections: a 13-patient case series.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent a substantial proportion of community-acquired infections. The increasing prevalence of Escherichia coli strains that produce extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) poses a significant obstacle to effective infection treatment. Although carbapenems remain highly effective against ESBL-producing isolates, their use in lower UTIs is limited by the need for intravenous or intramuscular administration, hospitalization, high cost, and the risk of collateral damage due to their broad-spectrum activity. Therefore, there is a growing need for eff
