The effects of corticosteroids on cognitive flexibility and decision-making in women with lupus.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effects of corticosteroids in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in two processes of executive function: cognitive flexibility and decision-making. To that end, we evaluated 121 women divided into three groups: 50 healthy women, 38 women with SLE not receiving corticosteroid treatment and 33 women with SLE receiving corticosteroid treatment. Cognitive flexibility was measured with the Trail Making Tests A and B; decision-making was measured with the Iowa Gambling Task. Additionally, demographic (age and education level), clinical

Aberrant function of learning and cognitive control networks underlie inefficient cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa: a cross-sectional fMRI study.

OBJECTIVES: People with Anorexia Nervosa exhibit difficulties flexibly adjusting behaviour in response to environmental changes. This has previously been attributed to problematic behavioural shifting, characterised by a decrease in fronto-striatal activity. Additionally, alterations of instrumental learning, which relies on fronto-striatal networks, may contribute to the observation of inflexible behaviour. The authors sought to investigate the neural correlates of cognitive flexibility and learning in Anorexia Nervosa. METHOD: Thirty-two adult females with Anorexia Nervosa and thirty-two ag

The role of pre-existing assumptions and cognitive flexibility in the development of post-trauma cognitive processes - an analogue study.

OBJECTIVE: This experimental study investigated whether the trait factors of world assumptions and cognitive flexibility were predictive of levels of attentional bias to threat stimuli, memory integration, and data-driven processing. METHODS: An opportunity sample of 74 participants took part in the investigation. Participants viewed a virtual reality film to induce mild distress to mimic processes that can occur in individuals when experiencing a traumatic event. A prospective experimental design was conducted involving measurements at pre-trauma exposure (Time 1), post-exposure (Time 2) and

Flexible brain state engagement predicts cognitive control transdiagnostically.

Cognitive control supports adaptive responses in an ever-changing world. While alterations in cognitive control have been consistently observed in a range of psychiatric disorders, the neural mechanisms giving rise to this behavioral variation remain elusive. Here, we tested whether the ability to flexibly recruit recurring brain activation patterns (i.e., brain states) may serve as an intermediate phenotype supporting cognitive control in individuals with a spectrum of clinical symptoms. We leveraged machine learning and external validation to explore this question in three independent, trans

The fronto-parietal network is not a flexible hub during naturalistic cognition.

The fronto-parietal network (FPN) is crucial for cognitively demanding tasks as it selectively represents task-relevant information and controls other brain regions. To implement these functions, it has been argued that it is a flexible hub that reconfigures its functional connectivity with other networks. This was supported by a study in which a set of demanding tasks were presented, that varied in their sensory features, comparison rules, and response mappings, and the FPN showed greater reconfiguration of functional connectivity between tasks than any other network. However, this task set w

Effects of Physical Activity Interventions on Cognitive Flexibility in Children with ADHD: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with impairments in executive functions, particularly cognitive flexibility, which may negatively affect academic performance, behavioral regulation, and daily adaptation in children. Physical activity has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological strategy to support executive functioning; however, evidence regarding the effects of different exercise modalities on cognitive flexibility remains heterogeneous. METHODS: This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Cognitive flexibility deficits differ between the sexes in a transchromosomic mouse model of Down syndrome.

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit cognitive and behavioral phenotypes, including intellectual disability, and reduced cognitive flexibility. The TcMAC21 DS mouse model (Tc(HSA21,CAG-EGFP)1Yakaz/J) has a freely segregating human chromosome 21 containing ∼93% of protein-coding genes and was hypothesized to show significant deficits in behavioral, learning, and memory tests. Examination of male and female TcMAC21 and control mice from postnatal day (P) 45-P62 showed TcMAC21 mice had lower body weight, with greater differences in males. Locomotor activity testing on P45 revealed TcMAC21

Problematic digital use in adolescents with ADHD: impulsivity, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and perceived cognitive flexibility.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk for problematic digital use (PDU), which is better characterised by loss of control and functional impairment than by screen time alone. The present study investigated problematic internet, social media, and gaming use among adolescents with ADHD, focusing on impulsivity, obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms, and perceived cognitive flexibility. METHODS: This cross-sectional case-control study included 132 adolescents aged 12-18 years (69 treatment-naive adolescents with ADHD and 63 healthy controls) recrui

Associations between affective distress, alcohol use, and cognitive flexibility: moderating effects of COMT Val158Met genotype.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is common during emerging adulthood and has been associated with impairments in executive functioning, including cognitive flexibility. Individual differences in affective distress, early life adversity, and genetic variation in dopaminergic signaling pathways may contribute to variability in cognitive flexibility among young adults. The present study examined the relationships among proximal affective distress, distal early life stress, alcohol use, and the functional COMT Val158Met polymorphism. METHODS: Seventy-two college-aged adults completed measures of adverse c

Modulation of Neural Compensatory Response by Duration of Sleep Deprivation in a Cognitive Flexibility Task.

The neural compensation mechanism involves maintaining cognitive performance during sleep deprivation (SD) by triggering alternative neural activations. While cognitive task complexity modulates post-SD neural activation, the role of SD duration remains uncertain. Thirty-three healthy college students (16 male and 17 female) completed a 36-h SD protocol, performing a switching task at baseline (pre-SD), after 24 h of SD (SD-24), and after 36 h of SD (SD-36). Resting-state EEG signals were recorded for 5 min at each SD stage and analysed using Standardised Low-Resolution Electromagnetic Tomogra

Shared Versus Unique Features of Neural Activation During Cognitive Flexibility Across Restrictive Eating Disorder Presentations.

OBJECTIVE: Restrictive eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical AN (Atyp-AN), are often associated with cognitive rigidity that can impede treatment. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) plays a central role in cognitive control, but it remains unclear whether its activation during cognitive flexibility will differ across restrictive ED presentations. METHOD: Eighty-seven females with restrictive EDs (aged 14-35) (AN: n = 31; atyp-AN with history of AN [hx-AN]: n = 33; atyp-AN without history of AN [Atyp-AN]: n = 23) completed a task-switching paradigm during

The Orbitofrontal Cortex to Striatal Cholinergic Interneuron Circuit Controls Cognitive Flexibility Shaping Alcohol-Seeking Behavior.

BACKGROUND: A top-down neuronal circuit from the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) to the dorsomedial striatum (DMS) appears to be critical for cognitive flexibility. However, how OFC projections to different types of neurons in the DMS control cognitive flexibility and contribute to substance seeking and use, which are relatively inflexible behaviors, remains unclear. METHODS: Mice were trained on 2-bottle choice and operant alcohol self-administration procedures. The cognitive flexibility of the mice was tested through a place discrimination task. Electrophysiology and in vivo optogenetics were us

The p75 Neurotrophin Receptor in Preadolescent Prefrontal Parvalbumin Interneurons Promotes Cognitive Flexibility in Adult Mice.

BACKGROUND: Parvalbumin (PV)-positive GABAergic (gamma-aminobutyric acidergic) cells provide robust perisomatic inhibition to neighboring pyramidal neurons and regulate brain oscillations. Alterations in PV interneuron connectivity and function in the medial prefrontal cortex have been consistently reported in psychiatric disorders associated with cognitive rigidity, suggesting that PV cell deficits could be a core cellular phenotype in these disorders. The p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) regulates the time course of PV cell maturation in a cell-autonomous fashion. Whether p75NTR expression

Numbers in action during cognitive flexibility - A neurophysiological approach on numerical operations underlying task switching.

Cognitive flexibility is a major competence to cope with daily life requirements and is usually investigated using task switching paradigms. Often, numerical stimuli are used to examine switching between task rules. Based upon functional neuroanatomical considerations we hypothesize that the ability to efficiently perform task switching varies depending on the cognitive operations performed with these numerical stimuli during task switching (magnitude vs parity judgments). We use a system-neurophysiological approach combining EEG and event-related potential (ERP) recordings with temporal data

Modulation of cognitive flexibility by reward and punishment in BALB/cJ and BALB/cByJ mice.

Learning from feedback is one of the key mechanisms within cognitive flexibility, which is needed to react swiftly to constantly changing environments. The motivation to change behavior is highly dependent on the expectancy of positive (reward) or negative (punishment) feedback. Individuals with conduct disorder (CD) with high callous unemotional traits show decreased sensitivity to negative feedback and increased reward seeking. Previous studies have modeled traits associated with CD (i.e. heightened aggression and anti-social behavior) in BALB/cJ mice (compared to the BALB/cByJ mouse as cont

Introduction to the Special Issue on Cognitive and Behavioral Flexibility in Fear and Anxiety Disorders.

Converging lines of research highlight the significance of cognitive and behavioral flexibility in the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of fear and anxiety disorders. We have developed a Special Issue to highlight recent empirical investigations, contemporary theory, and novel directions for future study. It is hoped that this special issue will (a) underscore the centrality of cognitive and behavioral flexibility to fear- and anxiety-related psychopathology, (b) call attention to cognitive science approaches investigating related neuropsychological correlates, and (c) highlight novel expe
