Orbital emphysema and associated pneumocephalus usually result from trauma to orbital bones or due to sinus disease, allowing air to travel from paranasal sinus into orbit and brain. However, it is extremely rare to have orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus in the absence of orbital wall fracture. In our case, a young male was admitted with severe eye pain, diminution of vision due to sudden exposure of compressed air gun. Examination revealed proptosed, emphysematous right eye with conjunctival laceration. Computed tomography scan of the head and orbit revealed multiple radiolucencies with ai

Wisdom tooth extraction is a common procedure in dentistry and stomatology. Subcutaneous emphysema is a rare postoperative complication and commonly remains localized. However, it may spread to the mediastinum, endangering the life of the patient. This present paper presents a case study of pneumomediastinum after wisdom tooth extraction without the use of a compressed air turbine and reviews the cases of subcutaneous emphysema after third molar extraction published in the literature since 2010. The aim of this work is to inform preventive measures, pathophysiological processes, and management

Our goal was to evaluate a new air dissection technique for the spaces of the head and neck using fresh-frozen cadavers. Eight sides from four fresh-frozen Caucasian cadavers were used in this study. Compressed air was initially placed into the pterygomandibular space while simultaneously observing the spaces of the head and neck. Subsequently, the pterygomandibular space on the contralateral side of the specimen was insufflated and observations made. For these methods, simultaneous observation of mediastina and lungs was made using intrathoracic endoscopy. On all sides, the buccal, submental,

The plane running between two adjacent pulmonary segments consists of a very thin layer of connective tissue through which the pulmonary vein also runs. To perform an anatomically correct segmentectomy, this segmental plane needs to be divided. Before the operation, the locations of vessels and bronchi are confirmed by three-dimensional computed tomography. A 4-cm minithoracotomy skin incision is made in the fourth intercostal space on the antero-axillary line, and two ports are added for the scope and the assistant surgeon. Dissection is performed bluntly with confirmation of the pulmonary ve

A proof of concept of a novel air microfluidics-enabled soft robotic sleeve to enable lymphedema treatment is presented. Compression sleeves represent the current, suboptimal standard of care, and stationary pumps assist with lymph drainage; however, effective systems that are truly wearable while performing daily activities are very scarce. This problematic trade-off between performance and wearability requires a new solution, which is addressed by an innovative microfluidic device. Its novelty lies in the use of light, small, and inexpensive air microfluidic chips (35 × 20 × 5 mm3 in size) t

Air pneumatic compression is a concept used for management of venous disease, including oedema. A typical air pneumatic compression device (PCD) consists of an inflatable sleeve composed of either single or multiple pressure chambers that encircle a limb. The aim of this research was to develop a mathematical model to predict the pressure applied by an air pneumatic device to an irregular cross-sectional lower limb manikin. The radius of curvature at any cross-section of the lower limb (i.e. calf (gastrocnemius), tibial crest (anterior edge of the tibia bone)) is irregular, and differs amongst

BACKGROUND: Although pneumorrhachis is usually considered a benign radiological finding, in the epidural setting it may act as a compressive lesion and mimic surgically urgent pathology. This report describes a case of acute paraplegia following thoracic epidural analgesia caused by epidural air and highlights diagnostic and systems-related pitfalls.
OBSERVATIONS: A 68-year-old man with chronic pelvic osteomyelitis developed sudden thoracic pain and rapidly progressive bilateral lower extremity paresis during a programmed bolus administration through a thoracic epidural catheter. Emergency MR

Perioperative bleeding is a critical challenge in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) surgery. Preventing hypothermia is associated with decreased development of coagulopathy, blood transfusion rate in various surgery groups. We hypothesized that blood loss would be reduced in patients who were kept normothermic by implementation of aggressive warming methods in AIS. This randomized-controlled study included patients aged 12-18 years who were scheduled to undergo elective scoliosis deformity correction surgery. The patients were divided into two groups: the study group (Group S) was heated a

Pulmonary surfactant adsorbs rapidly to the surface of the liquid layer that lines the alveolar air sacs of the lungs. When compressed by the decreasing alveolar surface area during exhalation, the adsorbed films avoid collapse from the air/liquid interface and reduce surface tension to exceptionally low levels. Results with factors that induce surfactant lipids to increase intrinsic curvature suggest that adsorption proceeds via a curved rate-limiting structure. Samples with negative intrinsic curvature, defined by a concave hydrophilic surface, adsorb rapidly, but they also desorb quickly. P

We report a rare case of cuff inflation failure in a reinforced nasotracheal tube, despite the pilot balloon being fully inflated. This failure was attributed to the compression of the inflation channel within the tube's wall, leading to a peritubal air leak and inadequate ventilation. Videolaryngoscopic assessment revealed air bubbles around the tube near the vocal cords, while the cuff remained deflated. The endotracheal tube was replaced using an airway exchange catheter, which improved ventilation. Although previous literature mentions cuff inflation failures due to kinked pilot tubing or

Although diving with compressed air is generally safe, neurological problems resulting from infarction in SCUBA diving are well known, including arterial gas embolism and decompression sickness (caisson's disease, bends) involving the brain and spinal cord. While air gas embolism forms the overwhelming majority of causes for stroke in divers, internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection is another potential mechanism for central nervous system infarction in the setting of SCUBA diving. A 38 year-old female, who presented with complaints of headache, nausea, vomiting, and left sided hemiparesis aft

BACKGROUND: Transradial access (TRA) is a standard approach to cardiac catheterization. Following the procedure, air-filled compression bands are often used to achieve hemostasis at the access site. Despite research supporting early, gradual deflation to minimize complications, there is no established best practice for band deflation. At our urban academic medical center, the lack of a standardized compression band deflation protocol resulted in varied start times and amounts of air removed with each attempt, as well as inconsistent documentation.
PURPOSE: The aim of this quality improvement

Pneumorrhachis (PR) is an uncommon condition characterized by the accumulation of air within the spinal canal. This finding may occur due to various causes, mostly after trauma and medical procedures. It can manifest with various features depending on the underlying cause, the location, and the extent of the air trapped. Clinically, the symptoms in affected patients can span a spectrum, ranging from being asymptomatic to manifesting as radiculopathies resulting from compression. The pneumorrhachis-related cauda equina syndrome is incredibly rare and typically appears as a large volume of air c

Background/Objectives: A disadvantage of Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) in eyes with prior glaucoma filtration surgery is the difficulty in maintaining air tamponade during the procedure. Herein, we report the use of bleb compressive sutures in managing air tamponade in the anterior chamber during DSAEK in eyes with blebs following trabeculectomy. Methods: This retrospective case series included 34 eyes of 33 patients that developed bullous keratopathy following trabeculectomy. Bleb compression suturing was performed using a 10-0 nylon suture in eyes with an intr

During underwater vehicle escape training with compressed air, a fit 26-year-old soldier suffered pulmonary barotrauma with cerebral arterial gas embolism after surfacing from a depth of 0.75-1.2 metres of freshwater or less. She presented with an altered level of consciousness. Rapid neurological examination noted slurred speech, a sensory deficit and right hemiparesis. Eleven hours after the accident, hyperbaric oxygen treatment was initiated using US Navy Treatment Table 6. The soldier almost completely recovered after repeated hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Given the very shallow depth this

In gerbils, 'minor' (myoclonic) and 'major' (clonic-tonic) seizures were induced by blowing at the animals with compressed air. The anticonvulsant ED50 of the following drugs was determined after oral administration against both types of seizures: phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, sodium valproate, ethosuximide, and diazepam. Valproate, ethosuximide, and diazepam were most potent against 'minor' seizures which could not or only partially be suppressed by phenytoin or carbamazepine, respectively. The 'grand mal' drugs phenytoin, phenobarbital, and carbamazepine were, on the other hand, m

We evaluated hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on a cohort of patients with femoral head necrosis (FHN). This double-blind, randomized, controlled, prospective study included 20 patients with unilateral FHN. All were Ficat stage II, treated with either compressed oxygen (HBO) or compressed air (HBA). Each patient received 30 treatments of HBO or HBA for 6 weeks. Range of motion, stabilometry, and pain were assessed at the beginning of the study and after 10, 20, and 30 treatments by a blinded physician. After the initial 6-week treatment, the blind was broken; and all HBA patients were offered H

BACKGROUND: We investigated the role of the central NMDA receptor NR2 subunits in the modulation of nociceptive behavior and p-p38 MAPK expression in a rat model with compression of the trigeminal nerve root. To address this possibility, changes in air-puff thresholds and pin-prick scores were determined following an intracisternal administration of NR2 subunit antagonists. We also examined effects of NR2 subunit antagonists on the p-p38 MAPK expression.
RESULTS: Experiments were carried out using male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing (200-230 g). Compression of the trigeminal nerve root was perf

INTRODUCTION: Surface cleaning and hand hygiene within hyperbaric chambers are challenging because of the risk of fire with currently used products containing alcohol or glycerine. This study aimed to investigate if hyperbaric conditions could have inhibitory effects on bacteria present on inert materials.
METHODS: We deposited Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) on inert materials in an experimental chamber (Comex1200Alu) and compressed the chamber environment with air (253 kPa, 95 minutes) (referred to as indoor). The control was contaminated materials placed ou

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pneumatic-induced subcutaneous emphysema (SE) of the upper limb is a rare occupational injury often mistaken for serious infectious conditions. This case highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and conservative management, contributing valuable insight to surgical and medical literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 37-year-old man who presented with left upper limb swelling and crepitus after injury with a pneumatic blower tip. Clinical examination revealed a puncture wound with palpable subcutaneous air, stable vital signs, and no systemic
