Estimating the effect of hormonal contraceptive use on anemia: A cross-sectional comparative analysis of 46 Demographic and Health Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a significant health concern for women in low- and middle-income countries. Hormonal contraceptives, which can reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and prevent pregnancy and its resulting blood loss, are an underexplored opportunity for anemia reduction. METHODS: Using Demographic and Health Survey data from 46 countries across four global regions, we examined country prevalence of anemia (i.e., hemoglobin below 12 g/dl via HemoCue testing) among women aged 15-49 years who were not pregnant. For each country, we used multivariable logistic regression to compare odds of anemia

Barriers to the use of IUDs as emergency contraception.

The intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is a very effective form of emergency contraception (EC). This author hypothesised that IUDs are an underused method and determined to evaluate potential barriers to IUD use. A postal survey of 100 family planning doctors and 100 general practitioners was conducted in Trent Region during March 1998 with a 70 per cent response rate. Lack of time was the most important factor that influenced doctor's decisions not to offer IUDs to the majority of women requesting emergency contraception. Most doctors registered concern about the risk of pelvic inflamma

The impact of the quality of family planning services on contraceptive use in Peru.

Through linkage of a Demographic and Health Survey to a situation analysis, this article explores whether current contraceptive use in Peru is affected by the service environment in which a woman resides. The investigation focuses explicitly on the impact of the quality of family planning services and finds that, net of personal and household characteristics, a significant, albeit small, effect exists for one specification of quality in the total sample and for the other specification a nearly significant (p = .053) effect exists. The analysis reveals that contraceptive prevalence would be 16

Factors associated with the discontinuation of modern contraceptive methods among lactating women in nine West African high-fertility countries: findings of the most recent demographic and health surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Contraception discontinuation is a concern, especially if it occurs in breastfeeding women, thereby exposing them to a high risk of close and unwanted pregnancies. Our study aimed to measure the prevalence and identify the individual and community-level factors associated with the discontinuation of modern contraceptives among breastfeeding women. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of retrospective data of the most recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data from nine high-fertility rate countries, conducted mostly between 2018-2021. We reported weighted frequencies of

Predictors of modern contraceptive use among reproductive age women in high fertility countries in sub-Saharan Africa: evidence from demographic and health surveys.

BACKGROUND: The world's population has increased faster than expected due to high fertility rates, with sub-Saharan Africa accounting for most of the increase. Modern contraceptive use is the best option to reduce the high fertility rate. There is limited information on the prevalence of modern contraception and its predictors in sub-Saharan Africa's high-fertility countries. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of modern contraception among reproductive-age women in high fertility countries in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We used Demographic and Health Survey d

Family planning services quality as a determinant of use of IUD in Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Both availability and quality of family planning services are believed to have contributed to increasing contraceptive use and declining fertility rates in developing countries. Yet, there is limited empirical evidence to show the relationship between the quality of family planning services and the population based prevalence of contraceptive methods. This study examined the relationship between quality of family planning services and use of intrauterine devices (IUD) in Egypt. METHODS: The analysis used data from the 2003 Egypt Interim Demographic and Health Survey (EIDHS) that i
