[Gamma oscillation synchronization in schizophrenia--literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Gamma oscillation - as a basic operating mode of cortical networks - has received considerable interest in the the current EEG literature. Research in the field of gamma synchronization in schizophrenia has become the focus of psychiatry research in the past two decades, obtaining significant attention from the beginning, since the idea that a deficit in synchronization, especially in gamma oscillation synchronization might play a principal role in certain schizophrenia symptoms has emerged. METHODS: In our review we aim to provide a brief description of the theoretical backgrou

Robust cortical encoding of slow temporal modulations of speech.

This study investigates the neural representation of speech in complex listening environments. Subjects listened to a narrated story, masked by either another speech stream or by stationary noise. Neural recordings were made using magnetoencephalography (MEG), which can measure cortical activity synchronized to the temporal envelope of speech. When two speech streams are presented simultaneously, cortical activity is predominantly synchronized to the speech stream the listener attends to, even if the unattended, competing-speech stream is more intense (up to 8 dB). When speech is presented tog

Mechanistic insights into cortical network entrainment by tACS and tDCS: A computational modeling approach.

Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are increasingly explored for modulating large-scale brain oscillations associated with cognition, sleep, and neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the network-level mechanisms underlying their differential effects on synchronization and excitatory-inhibitory (E/I) dynamics remain poorly understood. This study investigates how tDCS, tACS, and algorithmically guided tACS (ALGO-tACS) influence phase synchronization, intrinsic frequency modulation

Characteristics of brain network after cardiopulmonary phase synchronization enhancement.

The central neural mechanism plays an important role in cardiopulmonary coupling. How the brain stem affects the cardiopulmonary coupling is relatively clear, but there are few studies on the cerebral cortex activity of cardiopulmonary coupling. We aim to study the response of the cerebral cortex for cardiopulmonary phase synchronization enhancement. The method of brain network was used and Pearson correlation analysis performed on the global attributes and phase synchronization time (CRPST) in the spontaneous, 2/2 and 4/4 breathing modes. Furthermore, calculated the phase lag index (PLI) amon

[The design of intelligentized FES system on ERD/ERS signals].

Our objective is the designing of a functional electrical stimulation (FES) system on event related desynchronization (ERD) and event related synchronization (ERS) signals. When the brain images the left-and right-leg movements, the ERD/ERS signals will appear. By characterization and characteristic classification, the ERD/ERS will be translated into the response control signal for operating the FES system to electrically stimulate the legs of motor disability. The result shows that the experiment is successful in electrically stimulating the legs of motor disability.

GABAergic Synchronization in Epilepsy.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the cerebral cortex. GABAergic inhibition enables synchronization of activity in cortical networks, and contributes to generation of variety of brain activity patterns. In relation to epilepsy, GABAergic inhibition has been traditionally viewed as the main mechanism counterbalancing glutamatergic excitation and preventing hypersynchronous neuronal discharges. Indeed, deficits in GABAergic functions most commonly result in a hyperexcitable epileptic state, and many of the currently used antiepileptic drugs act through enhance

Evolution of source EEG synchronization in early Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) disrupts functional connectivity in distributed cortical networks. We analyzed changes in the S-estimator, a measure of multivariate intraregional synchronization, in electroencephalogram (EEG) source space in 15 mild AD patients versus 15 age-matched controls to evaluate its potential as a marker of AD progression. All participants underwent 2 clinical evaluations and 2 EEG recording sessions on diagnosis and after a year. The main effect of AD was hyposynchronization in the medial temporal and frontal regions and relative hypersynchronization in posterior cingulate,

Lack of effects of low frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on alpha rhythm phase synchronization in migraine patients.

The study aimed to test the modulation induced by 1 Hz repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) of the occipital cortex on the alpha phase synchronization under repetitive flash stimuli in 15 migraine without aura patients compared to 10 controls. The EEG was recorded by 7 channels, while flash stimuli were delivered at 9, 18, 21 and 24 Hz in basal, rTMS (15 min of 1 Hz stimulation of the occipital cortex) and sham conditions. Migraine patients displayed increased alpha-band phase synchronization under visual stimulation, while an overall desynchronizing effect was evident in contro

Hostility- and gender-related differences in oscillatory responses to emotional facial expressions.

Hostility is associated with biases in the perception of emotional facial expressions, such that ambiguous or neutral expressions tend to be perceived as threatening or angry. In this study, the effects of hostility and gender on the perception of angry, neutral, and happy faces and on the oscillatory dynamics of cortical responses elicited by these presentations were investigated using time-frequency decomposition by means of wavelet transforms. Feelings of hostility predisposed subjects to perceive happy and neutral faces as less friendly. This effect was more pronounced in women. In hostile

Altered development and network connectivity in a human neuronal model of 15q11.2 deletion-related neurodevelopmental disorders.

The chromosome 15q11.2 locus is deleted in 1.5% of patients with genetic epilepsy and confers a risk for intellectual disability and schizophrenia. Individuals with this deletion demonstrate increased cortical thickness, decreased cortical surface area and white matter abnormalities. Human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neural progenitor cells (NPC) from 15q11.2 deletion individuals exhibit early adhesion junction and migration abnormalities, but later neuronal development and function have not been fully assessed. Imaging studies indicating altered structure and network connecti

Restoring brain connectivity by phrenic nerve stimulation in sedated and mechanically ventilated patients.

BACKGROUND: In critically ill patients, deep sedation and mechanical ventilation suppress the brain-diaphragm-lung axis and are associated with cognitive issues in survivors. METHODS: This exploratory crossover design study investigates whether phrenic nerve stimulation can enhance brain activity and connectivity in six deeply sedated, mechanically ventilated patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. RESULTS: Our findings indicate that adding phrenic stimulation on top of invasive mechanical ventilation in deeply sedated, critically ill, moderate acute respiratory distress syndrome

Machine Learning Identifies a Rat Model of Parkinson's Disease via Sleep-Wake Electroencephalogram.

Alpha-synuclein induced degeneration of the midbrain substantia nigra pars compact (SNc) dopaminergic neurons causes Parkinson's disease (PD). Rodent studies demonstrate that nigrostriatal dopamine stimulates pallidal neurons which, via the topographical pallidocortical pathway, regulate cortical activity and functions. We hypothesize that nigrostriatal dopamine acting at the basal ganglia regulates cortical activity in sleep and wake state, and its depletion systemically alters electroencephalogram (EEG) across frequencies during sleep-wake state. Compared to control rats, 6-hydroxydopamine i

Reactivity of posterior cortical electroencephalographic alpha rhythms during eyes opening in cognitively intact older adults and patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's and Lewy body diseases.

Please modify the Abstract as follows:Here we tested if the reactivity of posterior resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha rhythms from the eye-closed to the eyes-open condition may differ in patients with dementia due to Lewy Bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (ADD) as a functional probe of the dominant neural synchronization mechanisms regulating the vigilance in posterior visual systems. We used clinical, demographical, and rsEEG datasets in 28 older adults (Healthy), 42 DLB, and 48 ADD participants. The eLORETA freeware was used to estimate cortical rsEEG sources. Results show

Aperiodic activity shapes inter-brain synchrony during cooperative puzzle solving: dissociable task-enhanced and partner-specific spectral signatures.

Inter-brain synchrony (IBS) is increasingly used as a neural marker of social coordination. Yet standard hyperscanning pipelines rarely distinguish partner-specific coupling from parallel task engagement, and scarcely account for aperiodic (1/f) contributions to phase-based metrics. Here, in 10 dyads (N = 20) of close friends from Latin America recorded with dual mobile EEG during cooperative Jenga puzzle-solving, video co-watching, and eyes-closed resting, we combined cluster-permutation statistics, dyad-shuffled surrogate controls, spectral parameterization, and edge-level mixed-effects mode

Synchronization of Sensory Gamma Oscillations Promotes Multisensory Communication.

Rhythmic neuronal activity in the gamma range is a signature of cortical processing and its synchronization across distant sites has been proposed as a fundamental mechanism of network interactions. While this has been shown within sensory streams, we tested whether cross talk between the senses relies on similar mechanisms. Direct sensory interactions in humans (male and female) were studied with a visual-tactile amplitude matching paradigm. In this task, congruent stimuli are associated with behavioral benefits, which are proposed to be mediated by increased binding between sensory cortices

Rhythm and Synchrony in a Cortical Network Model.

We studied mechanisms for cortical gamma-band activity in the cerebral cortex and identified neurobiological factors that affect such activity. This was done by analyzing the behavior of a previously developed, data-driven, large-scale network model that simulated many visual functions of monkey V1 cortex (Chariker et al., 2016). Gamma activity was an emergent property of the model. The model's gamma activity, like that of the real cortex, was (1) episodic, (2) variable in frequency and phase, and (3) graded in power with stimulus variables like orientation. The spike firing of the model's neu

Phase Synchronization and Spectral Coherence Analysis of EEG Activity During Mental Fatigue.

In this article, 2 synchronization measures, phase locking value (PLV) and spectral coherence value (SCV), are used to characterize the changes of the phase synchronization and functional coupling of electroencephalogram (EEG) waves at different brain cortical areas for mental fatigue caused by a long-term cognitive task. The long-term cognitive task induces a significant decrease in the interhemispheric SCVs and PLVs of beta in central and parietal regions, a significant decrease in the intrahemispheric SCVs and PLVs of beta frequency band at the frontal-parietal and central-parietal, and fro

Disturbed post-movement beta synchronization in Wilson's disease with neurological manifestation.

We analyzed the changes of post-movement beta synchronization (PMBS) of the electroencephalogram (EEG) in Wilson's disease with neurological manifestation. Our aim was to determine if PMBS in Wilson's disease is altered in a different way than in Parkinson's disease or in essential tremor. Our purpose was to find out whether the analysis of PMBS could help the diagnosis in ambiguous cases. Ten patients with neurological manifestation of Wilson's disease and ten controls performed self-paced movements with the dominant hand during EEG acquisition. Five electrodes above the sensorimotor cortex w

Effects of hydration and hyperventilation on cortical complexity.

The effects of hydration and hyperventilation on cortical complexity were investigated in a sample of 19 healthy volunteers in a double-blind placebo design using magnetoencephalographic recordings. The subjects were asked to abstain from the intake of liquids 18 h before the study. Spontaneous magnetoencephalograms (MEG) were recorded before and after drinking 750 ml water (WAT group: nine subjects) or saline solution (SAL group: ten subjects) with eyes closed and open and during hyperventilation (HV) with eyes open. The MEG data were analysed using both linear (spectral power) and non-linear

Content-specific fronto-parietal synchronization during visual working memory.

Lateral prefrontal and posterior parietal cortical areas exhibit task-dependent activation during working memory tasks in humans and monkeys. Neurons in these regions become synchronized during attention-demanding tasks, but the contribution of these interactions to working memory is largely unknown. Using simultaneous recordings of neural activity from multiple areas in both regions, we find widespread, task-dependent, and content-specific synchronization of activity across the fronto-parietal network during visual working memory. The patterns of synchronization are prevalent among stimulus-s
