Tough, Transparent, and Multifunctional Eutectogels via Coordination-Regulated Monomer Solubilization in Metal-Salt Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based eutectogels are promising soft ionic materials for flexible electronics and wearable sensors, yet their development is fundamentally limited by poor monomer compatibility in conventional Type III choline chloride-based DESs. Tertiary amine-functionalized monomers, such as 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), exhibit low solubility in these hydrogen-bond-dominated systems due to polarity and interaction mismatches, which prevents uniform precursor formation and controllable polymerization. Here, we introduce a coordination-regulated solvation strategy

Ecotoxicity and biodegradability of pure and aqueous mixtures of deep eutectic solvents: glyceline, ethaline, and reline.

Most of the works carried out on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) make reference to their physicochemical properties, and the analysis of their toxicological behavior on the environment and biodegradability are still limited. In this work, an exhaustive study on the ecotoxicity of three pure deep eutectic solvents (reline, glyceline, and ethaline) and their mixtures with water (reline-water, glyceline-water, and ethaline-water) was carried out in different biomodels: bacteria (A. fisheri), crustaceans (D. magna), and algae (S. capricornatum). In addition, the amount of chlorophyll in the algae af

Highly efficient extraction/separation of Cr (VI) by a new family of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents.

Highly efficient and selective separation of Cr (VI) is great of importance in environmental pollution control. In this study, a novel family of hydrophobic DESs has been designed and synthesized by mixing parabens and quaternary ammonium, and then used to extract heavy metal Cr (VI) from water phase and the content of Cr (VI) is measured by 1,5-diphenylcarbazide spectrophotometry. It is found that the hydrophobic DESs exhibit excellent extraction performance towards Cr (VI). At the 1:1 M ratio of DES to Cr (VI), the extraction capacity is as high as 66.7 mg g-1, the extraction efficiency is g

Deep eutectic solvent-assisted bacterial devulcanization, detoxification, and degradation of waste tyre rubber.

The biodegradation of waste tyre rubber (WTR) is hindered by the presence of sulfur and additives, which limit microbial mineralization of the rubber polymers. To overcome this constraint, a hybrid chemi-biological approach is developed, wherein pretreatment with a reusable choline chloride/urea (ChCl/Ur) deep eutectic solvent (DES) is employed. Ground tyre rubber (GTR) is subjected to DES-assisted thermochemical pretreatment, followed by biological treatment using the Rhodococcus rhodochrous RPK1 bacterial strain in mineral salts medium for 28 days. The DES pretreatment significantly enhances

Deep Eutectic Solvent Based Multifunctional Hydrogels for Strain Sensing and Electrophysiological Signal Monitoring.

Hydrogels are promising for flexible electronics due to their unique properties, but their practical use is hindered by freezing and dehydration in extreme environments. Inspired by natural cryoprotection, we designed a hydrophilic deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of acryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (AETC) and urea. This DES/H2O binary solvent was then polymerized into a multifunctional hydrogel via a facile one-step photopolymerization. The dense hydrogen-bonding network within the DES effectively confines the motion of water molecules, thereby endowing the hydrogel with excepti

Multifunctional performance of deep eutectic solvent (DES) K2CO3-glycerol in biodiesel synthesis and purification.

Deep Eutectic Solvent K2CO3-Glycerol (DES K-G) was tested for its multiple roles in biodiesel production, serving as a catalyst, co-catalyst/reaction medium, and solvent in product purification. DES K-G was synthesised through a thermal mixing method at 80 °C with a molar ratio of K2CO3 : glycerol = 1 : 3.5. The catalyst performance in transesterification occurred at 65 °C, stirring at 450 rpm, with a methanol to oil weight ratio of 30 wt%. Under the same process conditions and catalyst ratio (1.2% w/w), the reaction performance with DES K-G was comparable with that of Sodium Methylate (SMO).

Ternary deep eutectic solvent fractionation of bamboo for bioethanol and pH-responsive lignin nanocarriers.

Achieving efficient delignification while preserving the native structure of lignin remains a critical challenge for integrated bamboo biorefineries. In this study, a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of (Benzyltriethylammonium chloride) TEBAC, ethylene glycol (EG), and p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TsOH) was developed for bamboo fractionation. The optimized TEBAC/EG/p-TsOH system removed up to 97.94% of lignin and 85.99% of hemicellulose, while retaining 84.46% of cellulose. The pretreated bamboo showed significantly improved enzymatic saccharification, achieving a glucose yield of 78.

Deep eutectic solvent-based ionogel: Innovative potential as a promising chromatographic separation material.

BACKGROUND: Ionogels, composed of cross-linked polymer networks with abundant anions and cations as dispersion media, have emerged as promising materials. The superior properties of ionogels suggest that they may offer valuable contributions to the development of novel chromatographic stationary phase. However, the potential application of ionogels as the charming materials in liquid chromatography has been limited, primarily due to the hydrophilic nature, leading to swelling and increased column pressure. To address this issue, a paradigm-shifting innovation was proposed by incorporating deep

Self-association of cyclodextrin inclusion complexes in a deep eutectic solvent enhances guest solubility.

Cyclodextrins are widely used pharmaceutical excipients known to increase the solubility of drug compounds through formation of inclusion complexes. A prominent limitation of common cyclodextrins is their own scarce solubility in water, which renders them unsuitable for many drug formulations. Cyclodextrin solubility can be enhanced in appropriate media such as Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs). However, DESs can also reduce the equilibrium constant for host-guest complexation, making it challenging to optimize drug solubility using cyclodextrin. To determine the impact and mechanism of cyclodextr

One-Pot Sequential Synthesis of Alkenylated Dihydroquinolinones and Hexahydroacridinones in Deep Eutectic Solvent Medium.

The sequential synthesis of N-heterocycles from saturated ketones poses significant challenges and has rarely been reported. Herein, an efficient synthesis of alkenylated dihydroquinolinones 7 and hexahydroacridinones 8 is achieved from saturated ketones 1 or 2 via dehydrogenation, cyclization, oxidation, and α-alkenylation in choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) medium. This strategy provides alkenylated dihydroquinolinones 7 and hexahydroacridinones 8 in excellent yield from low-cost, readily available starting materials under environmentally benign conditions. Furthermore, the

Hybrid materials based on deep eutectic solvents for the preconcentration of formaldehyde by SPME in coffee beverages.

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages. It can be prepared from green or roasted beans or from instant coffee. Unfortunately, in addition to the aroma obtained in the coffee roasting process, among others, formaldehyde can be produced. In this study, thin-film solid-phase microextraction was used to preconcentrate trace amounts of formaldehyde in different types of coffee with different roasting levels. For this purpose, 18 hybrid materials based on deep eutectic solvents were synthesized and tested as sorbents in thin-film solid-phase microextraction. The coffee samples were brew

New guidelines for testing "Deep eutectic solvents" toxicity and their effects on the environment and living beings.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were described at the beginning of this century as an alternative to ionic liquids (ILs) in green chemistry. Despite their obvious sustainable advantages as reaction media, there is still controversy about their potential toxicity. Most of the ecotoxicity assays done up to now involving DESs are based on antibiograms. This is not a good approach due to the high density and viscosity of most DESs already described. Additionally, antibiograms do not allow continuous monitoring of neither cellular growth nor changes on physicochemical parameters like culture acidific
