Plant-based low-protein diet for preventing malnutrition‒inflammation complex syndrome in adults with CKD: a single-centre preliminary experience.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a rising public health concern. Low protein intake reduces uremic toxin generation and improves the hemodynamic profile of the kidneys, postponing the need for eventual dialysis. Vegetarian diets have been shown to positively influence cardiovascular health and reduce uremic toxin levels and inflammation in CKD patients. The so-called “Malnutrition-Inflammation Complex Syndrome” (MICS) is a nontraditional cardiovascular risk factor that is associated with poor overall outcomes in CKD patients. The type of protein, not only the amount, may be relevant

A Healthful Plant-Based Diet as an Alternative Dietary Approach in the Management of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

Plant-based diets (PBDs) are gaining attention as a sustainable and health-conscious alternative for managing various chronic conditions, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In the absence of pharmacological treatments, exploring the potential of lifestyle modifications to improve biochemical and pathological outcomes becomes crucial. The adoption of PBDs has demonstrated beneficial effects such as weight control, increased metabolic health and improved coexisting diseases. Nonetheless, challenges persist, including adherence difficulties, ensuring nutri

Compliance with a Healthful Plant-Based Diet Is Associated with Kidney Function in Patients with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic kidney disorder with multiple cyst formation that progresses to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease. Plant-based diets have attracted considerable attention because they may prevent CKD development. This study investigated whether adherence to a plant-based diet is associated with kidney function in patients with ADPKD. The overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthful PDI (hPDI), and unhealthful PDI (uPDI) were calculated using dietary intake data. Among 106 ADPKD patients, 37 (34.91%) were classified as

Metabolic, adherence, and sustainability outcomes of plant-based low-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets: A systematic review of clinical evidence.

Plant-based adaptations of low-carbohydrate (PB-LCD) and ketogenic diets (PB-KD) have emerged as nutritional models aiming to combine metabolic efficacy, nutritional adequacy, and environmental sustainability within a One Health framework. These regimens may align human and planetary health goals, especially in long-term therapeutic contexts such as GLUT1 deficiency or drug-resistant migraine, where ketogenic approaches are established. However, evidence on the integration of plant-based principles into carbohydrate-restricted diets remains limited, particularly regarding sustainability and lo

Plant-based diets, stroke, and heart outcomes: a prospective study of the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets may protect against adverse cardiovascular outcomes, but the level of protection may differ by dietary composition and individual characteristics. Black and rural Americans-2 groups with high burden of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality-have had limited representation in plant-based diet research. OBJECTIVES: This prospective cohort study examined associations between plant-based diets and stroke incidence, coronary artery disease (CAD) incidence, and CAD mortality among participants in the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study. Regulation of lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1 and CCR3 in the Clinical Response to a Plant-Based Diet in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: RA is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by systemic inflammation and progressive joint damage. Plant-based dietary interventions have recently emerged as complementary anti-inflammatory therapy for active RA. However, the molecular anti-inflammatory mechanisms of plant-based dietary patterns in these patients are still poorly understood. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as key regulators of inflammation in chronic diseases. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the expression of lncRNAs and inflammatory genes in relation to the clinical response to follo

Low dietary sodium potentially mediates COVID-19 prevention associated with whole-food plant-based diets.

Compared with an omnivorous Western diet, plant-based diets containing mostly fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, with restricted amounts of foods of animal origin, are associated with reduced risk and severity of COVID-19. Additionally, inflammatory immune responses and severe acute respiratory symptoms of COVID-19, including pulmonary oedema, shortness of breath, fever and nasopharyngeal infections, are associated with Na toxicity from excessive dietary Na. High dietary Na is also associated with increased risks of diseases and conditions that are co-morbid with COVID-19, in

Reduced mechanosensitivity of duodenal vagal afferent neurons after an acute switch from milk-based to plant-based diets in anaesthetized pigs.

Acute changes in diet composition and/or origin alter gastric emptying and gastrointestinal motility. One of the hypotheses explaining these alterations involves changes in the sensitivity of duodenal vagal sensory neurons. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of multimodal duodenal vagal sensory neurons in 20 pigs feed either with milk-based or plant-based diets of identical caloric content. Twenty duodenal vagal afferents were recorded in anesthetized animal from the cervical vagus using the single fiber method. 10 pigs were fed with a milk-based diet (MD) for one month

The relationship between a plant-based diet and mental health: Evidence from a cross-sectional multicentric community trial (LIPOKAP study).

BACKGROUND: Dietary patterns emphasizing plant foods might be neuroprotective and exert health benefits on mental health. However, there is a paucity of evidence on the association between a plant-based dietary index and mental health measures. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to examine the association between plant-based dietary indices, depression and anxiety in a large multicentric sample of Iranian adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed in a sample of 2,033 participants. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate dietary intakes of participants. Three v

The overall plant-based diet index during pregnancy and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: a prospective cohort study in China.

The high overall plant-based diet index (PDI) is considered to protect against type 2 diabetes in the general population. However, whether the PDI affects gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk among pregnant women is still unclear. We evaluated the association between PDI and GDM risk based on a Chinese large prospective cohort - the Tongji Maternal and Child Health Cohort. Dietary data were collected at 13-28 weeks of pregnancy by a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. The PDI was obtained by assigning plant food groups positive scores while assigning animal food groups reverse scores. GDM was

Plant-based diets and mortality in Black and low-income Americans: findings from a large prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets have been widely promoted for their health and environmental benefits. However, the health benefits may differ by the quality (i.e. healthiness) of plant foods, and few studies have specifically evaluated the association of plant-based diets with mortality in Black and low-income Americans who disproportionately experience poor health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine associations of plant-based dietary patterns with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the Southern Community Cohort Study, a population-based prospective cohort conducted among predomi

Sustained Minimal Residual Disease Negativity in Multiple Myeloma is Associated with Stool Butyrate and Healthier Plant-Based Diets.

PURPOSE: Sustained minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity is associated with long-term survival in multiple myeloma. The gut microbiome is affected by diet, and in turn can modulate host immunity, for example through production of short-chain fatty acids including butyrate. We hypothesized that dietary factors affect the microbiome (abundance of butyrate-producing bacteria or stool butyrate concentration) and may be associated with multiple myeloma outcomes. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We examined the relationship of dietary factors (via a food frequency questionnaire), stool metabolites (via gas
