Antimicrobial activity screening of some sulfonamide derivatives on some Nocardia species and isolates.

Nocardia are aerobic, catalase-positive, Gram-positive microorganisms and typically acid-alcohol fast at some stage of the growth cycle. The genus Nocardia, a member of Mycolata group, is clinically important because it is an opportunistic pathogen. The sulfonamide derivative medicines are prefered to cure infection caused by Nocardia, such as nocardiaosis and mycetoma. Antimicrobial activities of seven sulfonamide derivatives have been investigated against some Nocardia species and isolates using the disk diffusion method on Sensitest agar medium (Oxoid). Thirty-six organisms, which consisted

Quinolone Susceptibility in Salmonella Isolates Based on Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Determination.

Introduction Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella typhi and paratyphi , is a generalized infection with case fatality of about 10%. The symptoms may be severe, with life threatening sequelae of infection in a proportion of cases. Antimicrobial agents are the mainstay of therapy in enteric fever so as to prevent the complications associated with severe illness and mortality in the patients. Fluoroquinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin) are very effective against completely susceptible Salmonella bacteria. However, their efficacy is doubtful once any resistance is detected. Pefloxacin testing has ultimatel

Rifabutin disk diffusion on chelated Mueller-Hinton agar: a robust methodological framework for accurate Acinetobacter baumannii susceptibility testing.

UNLABELLED: Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is an extensively drug-resistant pathogen requiring new therapeutic strategies. Rifabutin (RBT), a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved rifamycin, has demonstrated potent activity against CRAB; however, its activity is systematically underestimated by conventional antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) performed in conventional iron-rich Mueller-Hinton media, necessitating methods that accurately predict in vivo efficacy to guide its clinical use. Here, we describe the development of a disk diffusion method for RBT

Comparative in vitro susceptibility of Burkholderia pseudomallei to doripenem, ertapenem, tigecycline and moxifloxacin.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, continues to present therapeutic challenges in endemic areas. A number of clinical issues have prompted consideration of alternative antimicrobial therapies. These include stability in 24-h infusion pumps, broad-spectrum coverage in the empirical treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, cost, the need for effective oral agents and rare reports of emerging resistance. This study aimed to examine the in vitro susceptibility of B. pseudomallei to four new antimicrobial agents, namely moxifloxacin, tigecycline, ertapenem and doripene

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases: implications for the clinical laboratory and therapy.

Production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) is one of the most important resistance mechanisms that hamper the antimicrobial treatment of infections caused by Enterobacteriaceae. ESBLs are classified into several groups according to their amino-acid sequence homology. While TEM and SHV enzymes were the most common ESBLs in the 1990s, CTX-M enzymes have spread rapidly among Enterobacteriaceae in the past decade. In addition, some epidemiological studies showed that organisms producing CTX-M enzymes had become increasingly prevalent in the community setting in certain areas in the worl
