Spectrum of F8 gene mutations in haemophilia A patients from a region of Italy: identification of 23 new mutations.

Haemophilia A (HA) is an X-linked recessive bleeding disorder caused by a lack or decrease of coagulation factor VIII activity. The molecular diagnosis of HA is challenging and a variety of different mutations have been identified throughout the F8 gene. Our aim was to detect the causative mutation in 266 HA patients from Emilia-Romagna region (Italy) and in all suspected carriers. Molecular analysis of F8 in 201 HA patients (152 index cases) was performed with a combination of several indirect and direct molecular approaches, such as long distance polymerase chain reaction, multiplex ligation

Quality of life experiences of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy: a descriptive qualitative study from Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key aspect of breast cancer care, encompassing patients' physical, emotional, and social well-being. Although survival rates have improved, chemotherapy's adverse effects continue to compromise quality of life. In Ethiopia, particularly in Tigray, limited data exist on HRQoL among breast cancer patients. This study explored the HRQoL of women undergoing chemotherapy at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. A descriptive qualitative study was conducted from February to March 2020 among women receiving chemotherapy for at least six months. Data wer

Using a Machine Learning Approach to Predict the Need for Elective Revision and Unplanned Surgery after Implant-based Breast Reconstruction.

Two-stage implant-based reconstruction after mastectomy may require secondary revision procedures to treat complications, correct defects, and improve aesthetic outcomes. Patients should be counseled on the possibility of additional procedures during the initial visit, but the likelihood of requiring another procedure is dependent on many patient- and surgeon-specific factors. This study aims to identify patient-specific factors and surgical techniques associated with higher rates of secondary procedures and offer a machine learning model to compute individualized assessments for preoperative

Lower Body Functional Test Performance Varies Based on Patient Demographics.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The utility of precise and instrumented musculoskeletal performance tests is essential to characterize musculoskeletal function during physical activity. Variation in these tests based on common patient demographics warrants consideration when using test results to counsel and advise physically active people. This study aimed to compare isolated muscle strength and functional performance outcomes by sex (male, female), age (late-stage adolescents: 18-21 years; adults: 22-34 years), and activity level (Tegner Activity Scale {TAS}: TAS ≥7, TAS <7). We hypothesized that males,

Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome Complicated by Nutcracker Syndrome: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges.

Vascular compression syndromes result from compression of blood vessels by anatomical structures, impairing arterial or venous flow. Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome causes duodenal obstruction due to a narrowed aortomesenteric angle and a shortened distance. Nutcracker syndrome (NCS) involves compression of the left renal vein (LRV) between the SMA and aorta. Both conditions are rare, with concurrent cases infrequently reported. SMA syndrome has a notably low incidence, while the true prevalence of NCS is not well defined. Overlapping, nonspecific symptoms often delay diagnosis and i

Management of planum/olfactory meningiomas: predicting symptoms and postoperative complications.

OBJECTIVE: Given their location and slow growth, olfactory groove and planum sphenoidale meningiomas often grow to large sizes before they present with clinical symptoms and pose significant surgical challenges. The goal of our study is to identify which preoperative symptoms and findings on magnetic resonance imaging are correlated with specific postoperative outcomes in order to better counsel patients preoperatively. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 44 patients with planum/olfactory meningiomas treated at our institution from 1996 to 2006. We used univariate and multivariate regressi

The effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions in rural and remote populations: Systematic review and meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Rural and remote residents are more likely to smoke tobacco than those in major cities. However, they may experience unique systemic, provider, and individual barriers to accessing smoking cessation treatments, including distance and limited resources. Understanding the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions in this population is important due to higher smoking-related disease burden and death compared to those in major cities. METHODS: Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, PsychINFO, and Cochrane Library were searched until 19-02/2021. Inclusion criteria were randomised controlled t

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), a collaborative activity of clinical genetic departments and IVF centres.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) requires the combined efforts of geneticists and workers in the field of reproductive medicine. This was studied on the basis of a questionnaire, sent to 35 members of the PGD Consortium of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE). A reply was obtained from 20 centres. They represent the majority of activities in the field of PGD in the world. It is obvious that many of the activities (in vitro fertilisation, embryo culture and biopsy) take place in IVF units while others (counselling and diagnosis) are the responsibility of gene
