Conception rates after artificial insemination or embryo transfer in lactating dairy cows during summer in Florida.

The objective was to compare conception rates to embryo transfer relative to AI, during summer heat stress, in lactating dairy cows. Holstein cows (n = 180; 50 to 120 d postpartum) were allocated randomly to 1 of 3 groups: artificial insemination (AI, n = 84), embryo transfer using either embryos collected from superovulated donors (ET-DON, n = 48), or embryos produced in vitro (ET-IVF, n = 48). Embryos from superovulated donors were frozen in 10% glycerol and were rehydrated in a 3-step procedure, in decreasing concentrations of glycerol in a sucrose medium before transfer. Embryos produced i

Cancer risk among children born after assisted conception.

BACKGROUND: Accurate population-based data are needed on the incidence of cancer in children born after assisted conception. METHODS: We linked data on all children born in Britain between 1992 and 2008 after assisted conception without donor involvement with data from the United Kingdom National Registry of Childhood Tumours to determine the number of children in whom cancer developed before 15 years of age. Cohort cancer rates were compared with population-based rates in Britain over the same period, with stratification for potential mediating and moderating factors, including sex, age at d

Turning a Turner to a twin mother.

Women with Turner syndrome (TS) are subfertile due to premature ovarian insufficiency. Most women require hormone replacement therapy for attaining menarche and assisted reproductive technology (ART) using donor oocytes, autologous oocytes or in-vitro fertilisation for conception. Irrespective of the karyotype, monosomy X (45, X) or mosaic pattern, women with TS hold a very high risk for pregnancy due to high mortality rate secondary to aortic dissection and severe pre-eclampsia. Such high-risk pregnancies mandate extensive prepregnancy counselling, the need for multidisciplinary teams, close

Abnormal findings on hysterosalpingography: effects on fecundity in a donor insemination program using frozen semen.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the effect of abnormal baseline hysterosalpingography (HSG) on subsequent fecundity during the first six cycles of treatment. METHODS: Hysterosalpingography was performed on 208 asymptomatic ovulatory women with no history of pelvic disease who were referred for donor insemination. The findings were categorized into five groups: 1) normal study, 2) uterine anomaly or filling defect with bilateral tubal patency, 3) normal uterine anatomy with unilateral tubal patency, 4) normal uterine anatomy with bilateral tubal blockage, and 5) normal uterine anatomy with hy

Effectiveness and satisfaction with virtual and donor dissections: A randomized controlled trial.

In recent years, human anatomy education has faced challenges with traditional donor dissection, leading to the emergence of virtual dissection as an alternative. This study aims to investigate the academic performance and satisfaction of medical students by comparing the virtual and donor dissections. An open-labeled crossover randomized controlled trial was conducted with 154 first-year medical students in Human Anatomy and Neuroanatomy laboratories, which were divided into three classes. Students were randomly assigned to either the virtual (virtual dissection followed by donor dissection)

Same-sex mothers' experiences of equal treatment, parenting stress and disclosure to offspring: a population-based study of parenthood following identity-release sperm donation.

STUDY QUESTION: What are the experiences of same-sex mothers following identity-release sperm donation regarding equal treatment in society, parenting stress and disclosure to child? SUMMARY ANSWER: Mothers predominantly reported equal treatment in society, low levels of parenting stress and early disclosure of the donor conception to the child, and half of the couples had also informed the child of his/her right to obtain the donor's identity. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The number of two-mother families is increasing, and previous studies have reported about challenges related to heteronormativ

The motives and experiences of donor-conceived persons requesting the identity of their sperm donors.

RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the motives and experiences of donor-conceived persons (DCP) who search for and receive information about their identity-release sperm donor? DESIGN: A qualitative interview study with 29 individuals (21 women, seven men, one non-binary) who were consecutively recruited after having requested information about their sperm donor at five Swedish University hospitals. All participants were conceived after donor insemination to heterosexual couples within an identity-release donation programme. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face or via te

When 'sperm' becomes 'donor': transitions in parents' views of the sperm donor.

Abstract Little is known about recipients' views of their sperm donor. This study aimed to examine the possible transitions or consistencies in donor sperm recipients' (DSRs') view on the sperm donor over time. A longitudinal qualitative study of 19 Belgian heterosexual DSRs was undertaken. Interviews took place with both partners of the couple during pregnancy, at birth and 1.5-2 years after birth, and were analysed using a grounded theory approach. Recipients who intended to disclose exhibited a transition in their awareness of the donor from being of minimal importance to one who was increa

Sperm donor suffers years later from inherited disease.

A case is described of a man who discovered years after donating sperm for artificial insemination, that he had a serious genetic disease, autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia (ADCA). This manifests itself only years after puberty and occurs in 50% of the progeny. The sperm had been used for the conception of 18 children in 13 women. The parents were only told three years after the insemination. This long time interval was unavoidable since many of the parents had to be found and the hospital director wished first to discuss the matter with his legal advisors and other experts. In future, in a

Incidence of birth defects after artificial insemination with frozen donor spermatozoa: a collaborative study of the French CECOS Federation on 11,535 pregnancies.

Artificial insemination using cryogenically preserved spermatozoa has been widely used in human reproduction for several decades. No evaluation of the resulting pregnancies and conceptions has been undertaken in sufficiently large study populations for minor variations to be distinguished. This study involves 11,535 pregnancies conceived by artificial insemination using donor spermatozoa and followed from the time that pregnancy was diagnosed. The pregnancies followed a normal course with, in particular, no excessive fetal losses. While the global incidence of birth defects was similar to that

A review of whole-blood donors' willingness, motives, barriers and interventions related to donating another substance of human origin.

Diversification of blood collection agencies' (BCAs) core business requires donors to donate substances of human origin (SoHO) beyond whole-blood. Whole-blood donors are assumed to be willing to convert to donate other SoHO as well as whole-blood. However, no reviews consider the evidence on conversion (i.e., willingness/intention, behaviour, retention, attrition). This rapid review provides a narrative synthesis of whole-blood donors' conversion to another SoHO, characteristics contributing to conversion, motives and deterrents, and interventions encouraging conversion. Sixty-five studies wer

Withdrawal from a donor insemination programme.

The aim of this study was to examine the factors that influenced the withdrawal of couples from a regional donor insemination programme. Demographic, medical, treatment and outcome data were prospectively recorded on 375 referrals. One hundred and eight women had conceived at least 1 normal pregnancy. Withdrawals from the programme, without pregnancy, accounted for 165 couples, whilst 47 had begun treatment, and a further 29 were on the waiting list. Thirty nine (24%) of those withdrawing did so without notice or reason. Most of these (33) were in couples waiting to begin treatment. Natural co

Death, organ transplantation and medical practice.

A series of papers in Philosophy, Ethics and Humanities in Medicine (PEHM) have recently disputed whether non-heart beating organ donors are alive and whether non-heart beating organ donation (NHBD) contravenes the dead donor rule. Several authors who argue that NHBD involves harvesting organs from live patients appeal to "strong irreversibility" (death beyond the reach of resuscitative efforts to restore life) as a necessary criterion that patients must meet before physicians can declare them to be dead. Sam Shemie, who defends our current practice of NHBD, holds that in fact physicians consi

[Secrecy and anonymity in gametes donation].

In France, gamete donation is based on some fundamental principles such as anonymity, gratuity, and solidarity. In Europe a trend appeared for a removal of anonymity. This paper highlights the reasons for this removal of anonymity, and consequences for the donor's offspring, the gamete donor, the infertile couples. In particular, an examination of practice shows that removing the anonymity of gamete donation favors maintaining the secrecy of the circumstances of the conception, resulting in inefficiency of the law.
