Clinician uptake of obesity-related drug information: a qualitative assessment using continuing medical education activities.

BACKGROUND: Medications necessary for disease management can simultaneously contribute to weight gain, especially in children. Patients with preexisting obesity are more susceptible to medication-related weight gain. How equipped are primary care practitioners at identifying and potentially reducing medication-related weight gain? To inform this question germane to public health we sought to identify potential gaps in clinician knowledge related to metabolic adverse drug effects of weight gain. METHODS: The study analyzed practitioner responses to the pre-activity questions of six continuing

The effectiveness of continuing education in postoperative pain management: results from a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Studies still report high levels of postoperative pain. Inadequate treatment of patients experiencing pain is often due to lack of understanding of pain. METHODS: The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a course on "pain," evaluated by a pretest-posttest design, with a questionnaire mailed to the 168 participants in February 2005. The course consisted of seven sessions held from October 2002 to June 2003 in a public hospital in Udine, Italy. This hospital has 710 beds and more than 30,000 admissions a year. The course, included in the "pain-free hospital" na

Preventive Kidney Stones: Continue Medical Education.

Nephrolithiasis is a common health problem across the globe with a prevalence of 15%-20%. Idiopathic hypercalciuria is the most common cause of nephrolithiasis, and calcium oxalate stones are the most common type of stones in idiopathic hypercalciuric patients. Calcium phosphate stones are frequently associated with other diseases such as renal tubular acidosis type 1, urinary tract infections, and hyperparathyroidism. Compared with flat abdominal film and renal sonography, a noncontrast helical computed tomography scan of the abdomen is the diagnostic procedure of choice for detection of smal

Knowledge and confidence gains after a COVID-19 vaccine continuing education program developed for nurse practitioners.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been marked by rapid innovation in vaccine development. Given that nurse practitioners (NPs) are often involved in vaccine counseling and administration, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners developed a continuing education (CE) series that covered COVID-19 vaccine development, recommendations, administration, and solutions for overcoming hesitancy. In 2020 and 2021, three separate live webinars were delivered; each webinar was updated with the latest vaccine recommendations and was then archived in an enduring format for up to 4 months. The goal of this st

An Evaluation of a Continuing Education Workshop for Audiologists on the Assessment and Management of Tinnitus.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus assessment and management is an important component of audiology. The benefits of continuing education (CE) workshops in the field of tinnitus have not been published. This study evaluated the outcomes of a workshop centered around a Sound Therapy and Aural Rehabilitation for Tinnitus (START) framework. Our hypotheses were that a CE workshop would (1) be useful, (2) improve clinician's knowledge and willingness to undertake tinnitus practice, and (3) result in learners using knowledge gained in their practice. METHODS: Twenty-five participants attending a 3-day tinnitus

AI-Mediated Assessment of Continuing Medical Education: The Case-based Learning Intelligence Credit System (CLICS) Framework.

Continuing medical education (CME) and continuing professional development (CPD) systems have traditionally relied on time-based credit allocation, using participation duration as a proxy for professional learning. Although administratively simple and scalable, this model does not reliably demonstrate whether physicians have engaged in meaningful learning, improved clinical reasoning, or critically appraised evidence. The emergence of generative AI creates an opportunity to rethink how physician learning is documented, assessed, and credited. This viewpoint proposes the Case-based Learning Int

Moving Equity into Practice: Evaluation of an Online Asynchronous Continuing Medical Education Program for Rheumatology Care.

BACKGROUND: Persistent health inequities exist in the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of rheumatologic diseases among at-risk populations in Canada due to structural discrimination, provider bias, and limited guidance on equitable treatment. Prior research identified barriers and facilitators to rheumatology care access and proposed multi-level equity solutions. This informed the development of a 10-part, 3-module asynchronous online continuing medical education (CME) program for rheumatology clinicians. This study evaluates the program's acceptability and its impact on intended changes in

Barriers and facilitators to implementing a continuing medical education intervention in a primary health care setting.

BACKGROUND: Continuing medical education (CME), as a systematic attempt to facilitate change in General Practitioners' (GPs) practices, is considered crucial, assuming that if physicians are up-to-date, they will change and improve their practice, resulting in better performance and ultimately better patient care. However, studies continue to demonstrate considerable gaps between the real and ideal performance and patient-related outcomes. The objective of this study was to explore GP's perception of the factors affecting the implementation of a CME digital platform in a primary health care se

Improving Foot Examinations in Patients With Diabetes: A Performance Improvement Continuing Medical Education (PI-CME) Project.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to determine if a Performance-Improvement Continuing Medical Education (PI-CME) project, using the American Medical Association's methodology, would help improve the timeliness and comprehensiveness of foot examinations in patients with diabetes. METHODS: A PI-CME project was conducted with the Internal Medicine faculty staff physicians (n = 8) and residents (n = 45). Following the 3 steps of PI-CME, participants received baseline reports about their performance defined by the American Diabetes Association's guidelines for foot examinations (stage A).

CE: continuing education article. Integration of palliative care for patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease.

Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (Stage 5 CKD) have palliative care needs similar to patients with cancer. The decision not to commence dialysis or to withdraw from active treatment can have a profound impact upon all those closely involved in the patient's care. It is essential that every effort is made to minimise the physical and psycho-social symptoms experienced by patients who require palliative care. Effective teamwork across professional boundaries and specialities will ensure that patients and their families are provided with maximum comfort during their final days. All m
