Changes in medial elbow elasticity and joint space gapping during maximal gripping: reliability and validity in evaluation of the medial elbow joint using ultrasound elastography.

BACKGROUND: Medial elbow injuries are common in baseball pitchers. This study investigated the reliability of medial elbow elastography measurement and the characteristics of the medial elbow stabilizers. METHODS: Medial elbow joint space gapping and the strain ratios of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and the forearm flexor-pronator muscle (FPM) were measured at rest and during gripping in 29 healthy college students. The intraclass correlation coefficients of elastography were calculated. The data were compared between tissues and between rest and gripping. RESULTS: The intraclass corr

Development and evaluation of a soft pneumatic muscle for elbow joint rehabilitation.

Elbow joint rehabilitation presents a formidable challenge, underscored by the joint's complex biomechanics and high vulnerability to injuries and degenerative conditions. Despite the advancements in rehabilitative technology, current solutions such as rigid exoskeletons often fall short in providing the precision, flexibility, and customization needed for effective treatment. Although traditional robotic aids, such as rigid exoskeletons, help recover, they lack in providing sufficient flexibility, comfort, and easy customization with no need for complicated calculation and complex design cons

The internal joint stabilizer for chronic elbow dislocation: a surgical technique.

The main goal of treatment for chronically unreduced elbow dislocations is to restore a stable, concentric joint and regain a satisfactory arc of motion. Due to the conflicting goals of restoring elbow stability and regaining a good arc of motion, the treatment of chronic elbow dislocation remains a challenge for even the experienced orthopedic surgeon. The standard treatment of these dislocations consists of open reduction, V-Y muscleplasty of the triceps, and temporary arthrodesis or cast immobilization. However, prolonged postoperative immobilization may result in elbow stiffness, which sig

Internal joint stabilizer for varus posteromedial rotatory instability of the elbow.

BACKGROUND: Management of varus posteromedial rotatory instability (VPMRI) of the elbow presents a challenging problem, sometimes requiring supplemental external fixation or ulnohumeral cross-pinning. A relatively new treatment adjunct for posterolateral rotatory instability of the elbow has become available with the development of the internal joint stabilizer (IJS) implant. However, this has not been studied for VPMRI because the implant is thought to be ineffective at treating this instability when placed in the usual manner on the lateral side of the elbow. We hypothesize that modifying th

[Ultrasound diagnostics for myotendinous injuries and insertion tendinopathies of the elbow joint].

INTRODUCTION: Acute capsular injuries of the elbow joint and its ligaments predominantly occur after joint dislocation or subluxation. Together with lateral and medial epicondylitis they represent a common injury pattern in radiology, orthopedic and trauma surgery. CLINICAL ISSUE: Because of the complexity of the elbow joint, knowledge of the elbow dislocation and injury pattern as well as the anatomy is essential in order to adequately estimate the injury severity and joint stability. This is crucial for the correct diagnosis and choice of treatment. Systematic physical examination and caref

Anatomy of the collateral ligaments of the feline elbow joint: functional implications.

Cats show a higher capability to supinate their forearms than dogs. This suggests a special arrangement of the collateral ligaments of the feline elbow joint. Therefore, the course of the ligaments was examined in 13 adult cats. The size of the ligaments was measured, and effects of passive joint movements were studied. Ligaments of five additional cats were examined histologically. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) had a superficial and deep part, both originating from the humerus. The free humeral portion of the LCL was short and contained fibrous cartilage. Fibre bundles of the deep par

[Arthrodesis of the elbow joint. Indications, surgical technique and clinical results].

Arthrodesis of the elbow joint (EA) is a rare salvage procedure which is disliked by both surgeons and patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the indications, the operation techniques and the outcome of EA in patients treated at our clinic. Between January 1997 and December 2005 a total of 20 patients with a mean age of 55 years (range 27-85 years) were treated with EA at our clinic. In 18 patients a compression plate was used as surgical technique. In 18 out of the 20 patients the operation was performed post-traumatically after infection, bone and tissue defects and painful loss of m

[A hinged external fixator for treatment of complex elbow joint injuries].

BACKGROUND: The treatment of complex injuries of the elbow joint by a hinged fixator is a new concept of external transfixation with guided movement in a defined monocentric axis. Biomechanical investigations using cadaver specimens showed that the monocentric guidance ensures additional stability in these unstable osteoligamentous injuries, allows early functional treatment, and can be used in primary but also in revision surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1997 and 2004, 23 patients with complex fractures of the elbow joint were treated with a hinged monocentric external fixator after op

[A case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the elbow joint with bone invasion].

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a benign proliferative disorder of the joint and of the tendon sheath synovium. It has a predilection for the lower extremities, particularly the knee and the hip. The elbow joint is rarely affected. A 56-year-old woman had complaints of pain and swelling in the left elbow for three years. She had no history of trauma. On physical examination, she had swelling of the left elbow, varus deformity, and flexion contracture of 20 degrees. Active and passive joint movements were painful. Magnetic resonance imaging showed synovial thickening and signal changes. An

The joint jack: report of a new technique essential for elbow arthroscopy.

Visualization and access are of fundamental importance in arthroscopy, including arthroscopy of the elbow. A new technique not previously described in the literature improves both of these factors for key areas within the elbow that would otherwise be inaccessible. This technique employs the application of gentle leverage to pry apart the surfaces of the ulnohumeral articulation when viewing and working posteriorly to improve visualization and access to the ulnohumeral and radiocapitellar articular spaces. We believe this technique is essential for full arthroscopic viewing of the intra-articu

[Arthroscopy of the elbow joint. Long-term results, complications and indications].

UNLABELLED: Based on the results of a retrospective study of 67 patients who had diagnostic and surgical arthroscopy of the elbow from 1977 until 1990, we present the technique, results, complications, and indications for elbow arthroscopy. The average age of the patients was 26 years (range: 11-59). At follow-up, the patients were examined both clinically and radiologically. The results were scored according to Figgie's score, which contains the criteria of pain, function, power, and range of motion. The overall score increased significantly from 61.6 preoperatively to 85.3 postoperatively. T

Osteochondritis dissecans and fragmentation of the coronoid process in the elbow joint of the dog.

Of 26 dogs with elbow osteochondrosis, 11 had osteochondritis dissecans of the medial humeral condyle, seven had fragmentation of the coronoid process of the ulna and eight had both these lesions. Sixteen cases had bilateral involvement. The labrador and retriever breeds were most often affected and the male sex predominated. The clinical features included a foreleg lameness in a young immature dog with pain localised to the elbow joint. The most consistent radiological feature was the presence of osteophyte development especially on the dorsal aspect of the anconeal process, caused by seconda
