Serendipitous detection of invasive malaria vector Anopheles stephensi in Kisumu, Kenya in June 2022.

Anopheles stephensi is an invasive malaria vector that has been rapidly spreading within Africa since it was first identified in Djibouti in 2012. As of 2025, it has been identified in eight other countries: Ethiopia, Sudan, Somaliland, Eritrea, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Niger. We collected mosquitoes from an urban slaughterhouse in Kisumu City in western Kenya in mid-2022 for bloodmeal analyses. 19.6% (11/56) of the amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) assigned using the basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) returned matches for mosquito species, one of which was An. stephensi, from one pool

A Human Case of Echinococcus ortleppi Infection in Myanmar.

Echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease with global public health implications. However, its prevalence in Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, remains poorly documented. In this article, a case of human cystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus ortleppi (E. ortleppi) is reported in a 21-year-old man from Myanmar, who had traveled to Japan for vocational training. He presented to the study hospital in Tokyo after a chest radiograph revealed the presence of a giant cyst shadow in the right middle and lower lung fields. The cysts were excised, and echinococcosis was diagnosed on the basis of the p

Morphological and molecular identification of Sarcoptes scabiei in a South American coati (Nasua nasua) from Peru.

Sarcoptes scabiei (Linnaeus) (Sarcoptiformes: Sarcoptidae), the cause of sarcoptic mange, has been documented as a pathogen affecting domestic and wild mammals, including coatis (Nasua spp. Storr (Carnivora: Procyonidae)). This parasitism impacts the health of infested animals and, in some cases, modifies the population dynamics of the affected species. The present study reports the first case of sarcoptic mange in a South American coati (Nasua nasua (Linnaeus)) from Peru. The Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre (SERFOR) rescued a coati from illegal trafficking in June 2024. The an

Molecular phylogeny of Boninia (Platyhelminthes: Polycladida), with description of a new species from the Pacific coasts of Panama.

Mesopsammic polyclad members in the family Boniniidae have attracted attention in terms of their evolutionary shifts of microhabitat and their unique morphology such as a pair of pointed tentacles extending from the anterolateral margins and prostatoid organs harbouring stylets. Here, we establish a new species of this family as Boninia panamensis sp. nov. from the Pacific coasts of Panama, based on its morphological characteristics of (i) four cerebral and 61-80 marginal eyespots, (ii) two prostatoid organs located anterior and posterior to the penis papilla, and (iii) two uterine canals depa

An essential role for an Fe-S cluster protein in the cytochrome c oxidase complex of Toxoplasma parasites.

The mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) of apicomplexan parasites differs considerably from the ETC of the animals that these parasites infect, and is the target of numerous anti-parasitic drugs. The cytochrome c oxidase complex (Complex IV) of the apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii ETC is more than twice the mass and contains subunits not found in human Complex IV, including a 13 kDa protein termed TgApiCox13. TgApiCox13 is homologous to a human iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster-containing protein called the mitochondrial inner NEET protein (HsMiNT) which is not a component of Complex IV in hum

The relationship between cytochrome c oxidase, CBF and CMRO2 in mouse cortex: A NIRS-MRI study.

Quantifying relationships between cerebral blood flow (CBF), mitochondrial function (cytochrome c oxidase oxidation state), and metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) could provide useful insight into normal neurovascular coupling, as well as regulation of oxidative metabolism in neurological disorders. This paper uses a multimodal NIRS-MRI method to quantify these parameters in rodent brain and, in so doing, provides novel information on the regulation of oxygen metabolism by stimulating with hypercapnia or variations in oxygenation. Under hypercapnia, although oxygenation, oxidation state, and CBF

Ancylostoma ceylanicum infections in humans in Vietnam.

Ancylostoma ceylanicum is recognized as the only zoonotic hookworm species that is able to mature into adult stage in the human intestine. While human infections caused by this hookworm species have been reported from neighboring countries and this hookworm is prevalent in dogs in Vietnam, human infection has never been reported in Vietnam. The present study, therefore, aimed to identify human infections with A. ceylanicum in Vietnam. A total of 526 fecal samples from the residents in Long An Province were collected and the presence of hookworm eggs was detected by the Kato-Katz method. The re

Human infection by a "fish tapeworm", Diphyllobothrium latum, in a non-endemic country.

We document a case of locally acquired "broad- or fish-tapeworm" infection caused by Diphyllobothrium latum in a 27-year-old Spanish man, confirmed by molecular analysis (COI gene). The patient had naturally expelled a worm of 110 cm in length, but the physical examination did not yield any remarkable findings, and the patient did not suffer from any particular symptoms. Laboratory test results were normal except for a remarkable increase in the red blood cell count, and an evident decrease in the mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin. Vitamin B12 and folic acid values were i

First record of Taenia ovis krabbei muscle cysts in muskoxen from Greenland.

A first record of Taenia ovis krabbei muscle cysts in a muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) from the Kangerlussuaq population in West Greenland suggests that introduced muskoxen now contributes to the transmission of this parasite in addition to previous observations from caribou (Rangifer tarandus). Muskoxen and caribou are the only wild ungulates in Greenland.

Assessment of copper nutritional status.

Despite increased interest in the role of copper deficiency in clinical problems and an increased understanding of the physiological roles of copper, the diagnosis of a marginal deficiency has not been perfected. The use of non-standardized procedures and the effects of factors other than copper nutriture have impeded identification of the "ideal" indicator of copper nutritional status in adult humans. The specific activity of copper enzymes, or of copper-containing enzymes in blood cells, such as erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and platelet or leukocyte cytochrome c oxidase, may be a better

A study of the magnetic properties of haem a3 in cytochrome c oxidase by using magnetic-circular-dichroism spectroscopy.

M.c.d. (magnetic-circular-dichroism) spectroscopy was used to study the magnetization properties of the haem centres in cytochrome c oxidase with magnetic fields of between 0 and 5.3 T over the temperature range 1.5--200 K. The oxidized, oxidized cyanide and partially reduced cyanide forms of the enzyme were studied. In the oxidized state only cytochrome a3+ is detectable by m.c.d. spectroscopy, and its magnetization characteristics show it to be a low-spin ferric haem. In the partially reduced cyanide form of the enzyme cytochrome a is in the diamagnetic low-spin ferrous form, whereas cytochr

Depletion of mitochondrial DNA in the liver of an infant with neonatal giant cell hepatitis.

A boy presented with lactic acidosis, hepatomegaly, hypoglycemia, generalised icterus, and muscle hypotonia in the first weeks of life. At the age of 2 months, neonatal giant cell hepatitis was diagnosed by light microscopy. Electron microscopy of the liver revealed an accumulation of abnormal mitochondria and steatosis. Skeletal muscle was normal on both light and electron microscopy. At the age of 5 months, the patient died of liver failure. Biochemical studies of the respiratory chain enzymes in muscle showed that cytochrome-c oxidase (complex IV) and succinate-cytochrome-c oxidoreductase (

Toxicity of copper on isolated liver mitochondria: impairment at complexes I, II, and IV leads to increased ROS production.

Oxidative damage has been implicated in disorders associated with abnormal copper metabolism and also Cu(2+) overloading states. Besides, mitochondria are one of the most important targets for Cu(2+), an essential redox transition metal, induced hepatotoxicity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mitochondrial toxicity mechanisms on isolated rat liver mitochondria. Rat liver mitochondria in both in vivo and in vitro experiments were obtained by differential ultracentrifugation and the isolated liver mitochondria were then incubated with different concentrations of Cu(2+). Our results sh

Epilepsy and respiratory chain defects in children with mitochondrial encephalopathies.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between epilepsy and respiratory chain defects in children with mitochondrial encephalopathies (ME). STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective review of the medical records of children referred for evaluation of an ME. Only patients assigned a definite diagnosis of ME using modified Walker criteria and with a respiratory chain defect were included. Clinical data pertaining to the ME and epilepsy type were collected. Mitochondria were isolated by subcellular fractionation from a vastus lateralis muscle biopsy and studies w

Interaction of Cytochrome C Oxidase with Steroid Hormones.

Estradiol, testosterone and other steroid hormones inhibit cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) purified from bovine heart. The inhibition is strongly dependent on concentration of dodecyl-maltoside (DM) in the assay. The plots of Ki vs [DM] are linear for both estradiol and testosterone which may indicate an 1:1 stoichiometry competition between the hormones and the detergent. Binding of estradiol, but not of testosterone, brings about spectral shift of the oxidized CcO consistent with an effect on heme a33+. We presume that the hormones bind to CcO at the bile acid binding site described by Ferguson-M

Electron transfer and conformation states in bovine cytochrome c oxidase.

The fluorophores 1,5-I-AEDANS and eosin maleimide bind to subunit III of bovine cytochrome c oxidase. Fluorescence lifetime measurements have been made of bound AEDANS under a number of conditions. It appears that the spatial relationship between this bound probe and metal centers is unaffected by the redox changes in the enzyme. Cyanide binding to CuA-modified cytochrome c oxidase during turnover suggests that reduction of cytochrome a leads to exposure of the cytochrome a3-CuB binuclear center to incoming ligands. These results are discussed in terms of a model describing the roles of cytoch

Biallelic variants in COX4I1 associated with a novel phenotype resembling Leigh syndrome with developmental regression, intellectual disability, and seizures.

Autosomal recessive COX4I1 deficiency has been previously reported in a single individual with a homozygous pathogenic variant in COX4I1, who presented with short stature, poor weight gain, dysmorphic features, and features of Fanconi anemia. COX4I1 encodes subunit 4, isoform 1 of cytochrome c oxidase. Cytochrome c oxidase is a respiratory chain enzyme that plays an important role in mitochondrial electron transport and reduces molecular oxygen to water leading to the formation of ATP. Defective production of cytochrome c oxidase leads to a variable phenotypic spectrum ranging from isolated my
