PCBs and PCDD/Fs in soil from informal e-waste recycling sites and open dumpsites in India: Levels, congener profiles and health risk assessment.

Growth of informal electronic waste (e-waste) recycling sector is an emerging problem for India. The presence of halogenated compounds in e-wastes may result in the formation of persistent organic pollutants like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during recycling processes. We therefore investigated PCBs and PCDD/Fs in surface soils explicitly from the informal e-waste recycling sites and nearby open dumpsites of major metropolitan cities from four corners of India, viz., New Delhi (North), Kolkata (East), Mumbai (West) and Chennai

Environmental impact of single-use items and their contamination levels in elective orthopaedic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Single-use items have dominated operating theatres since the 1980s, initially perceived to carry a lower risk of surgical site infection and occupational blood exposure while maintaining hospital expenditure. The topic of reusable surgical gowns and drapes has naturally emerged due to discussions regarding climate change. Considering reusable alternatives is the next step in reducing the carbon footprint of operating theatres. METHODS: Clinical waste attributable to single-use items was collected from 93 cases in an elective orthopaedic hospital over four weeks, comprising knee ar

Fabrication of new glass-ceramic materials from float glass and slag waste by modulation of the cooling rate.

This study explores an alternative route to recycle waste materials from float glass (FG, 30 wt%) and copper slag (CS, 70 wt%). The FG is a silica-rich glass, while the CS is rich in Fe and Zn. They were melted at 1550 °C to obtain a homogeneous glass that was then re-melted and cooled at 10 (low) and 500 (high) °C/h to produce a glass-ceramic. X-Ray Powder Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope and Electron microprobe characterisations show that both products contain spinel crystals within an abundant glassy matrix. At 500 °C/h, unexpectedly, the glass-ceramic contains a higher content (30

Plastic wastes for carbon-based materials: Investigations on recent applications towards environmentally sustainable, carbon dioxide capture and green energy.

The rapid growth in plastic production, coupled with inadequate waste management, has led to a significant accumulation of plastic waste in different environments. This raises substantial concerns about long-term ecological impacts, including bioaccumulation in organisms and potential risks to human health. This review focuses on plastic waste-derived carbon materials (PWCMs) and their role in promoting sustainable, eco-friendly energy solutions. The novelty of the study examines the current progress in converting plastic waste into carbon-based materials, with a particular emphasis on recent

Bioaccumulation of metals from nickel smelter waste in P and F1 generation of exposed animals. Part III. Morphological responses.

Inhalation exposure experiments were conducted on a group of female adult Chinchilla rabbits placed in a field biomonitoring station located downwind from dumped nickel refinery wastes. Their F1 generation offsprings were exposed prenatally and 6 weeks postnatally. After termination of exposure, both P and F1 generation rabbits were sacrificed, their organs removed and subjected to a histologic examination using light and electron microscopy techniques. The histological responses were most marked in P generation female rabbits, namely hypertrophy of the muscle layer of pulmonary artery walls a

Modeling Denitrification as an Electric Circuit Accurately Captures Electron Competition between Individual Reductive Steps: The Activated Sludge Model-Electron Competition Model.

Heterotrophic denitrification consists of the four-step sequential reduction of nitrate to dinitrogen gas over nitrite, nitric oxide, and nitrous oxide. Oxidation processes, commonly of organic compounds, provide the electrons needed for the sequential reaction steps. The intracellular electron distribution is a competitive process among the four reduction steps. In this study, a model describing organic carbon oxidation and four-step denitrification through electron competition is proposed [Activated Sludge Model-Electron Competition (ASM-EC)]. The model describes denitrification rates as an

Effect of chemical pretreatment on pyrolysis of non-metallic fraction recycled from waste printed circuit boards.

The non-metallic fraction from waste printed circuit boards (NMF-WPCB) generally consists of plastics with high content of Br, glass fibers and metals (e.g. Cu), which are normally difficult to dispose. This work aims to study the chemical pretreatments by using alkalis, acids and alkali-earth-metal salts on pyrolysis of NMF-WPCB. Char (60-79%) and volatile matter (21-40%) can be produced via the pyrolysis process. In particular, the ash content can reach up to 42-56%, which was attributed to the high content of glass fibers and other minerals. Copper (Cu, 2.5%), calcium (Ca, 28.7%), and alumi

Copper(II) and Zinc(II) Complexes with Bacterial Prodigiosin Are Targeting Site III of Bovine Serum Albumin and Acting as DNA Minor Groove Binders.

The negative environmental and social impacts of food waste accumulation can be mitigated by utilizing bio-refineries' approach where food waste is revalorized into high-value products, such as prodigiosin (PG), using microbial bioprocesses. The diverse biological activities of PG position it as a promising compound, but its high production cost and promiscuous bioactivity hinder its wide application. Metal ions can modulate the electronic properties of organic molecules, leading to novel mechanisms of action and increased target potency, while metal complex formation can improve the stability

Process and systematic study of gold recovery from flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs) using a choline chloride-ethylene glycol system.

The traditional hydrometallurgy technology has been widely used to recover precious metals from electronic waste. However, such aqueous recycling systems often employ toxic/harsh chemicals, which may cause serious environmental problems. Herein, an efficient and environment-friendly method using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) mixed system of choline chloride-ethylene glycol-CuCl2·2H2O is developed for gold (Au) recovery from flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs). The Au leaching and precipitation efficiency can reach approximately 100 % and 95.3 %, respectively, under optimized conditions. Ki

Exploring the untapped practices in bacterial-fungal mixed-based cultures for acidic treatment of metal-enriched printed circuit board waste.

This study explores the extraction of metals from spent mobile phone printed circuit boards (SMPhPCBs) to address environmental and resource depletion concerns. The challenges in metal recovery from SMPhPCBs arise due to their complex composition and high metal content. While previous research has primarily focused on using bio-cyanide, bio-sulfate, and bio-ferric compounds from acidophilic bacteria, the potential of bio-oxalic acid for SMPhPCBs treatment and the alteration of their complex structure has not yet been explored. Additionally, this study suggests evaluating the untapped potential

Discharge of lithium-ion batteries in salt solutions for safer storage, transport, and resource recovery.

The use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has grown in recent years, making them a promising source of secondary raw materials due to their rich composition of valuable materials, such as Cobalt and Nickel. Recycling LIBs can help reduce fossil energy consumption, CO2 emissions, environmental pollution, and consumption of valuable materials with limited supplies. On the other hand, the hazards associated with spent LIBs recycling are mainly due to fires and explosions caused by unwanted short-circuiting. The high voltage and reactive components of end-of-life LIBs pose safety hazards during mech

Water-Sintered Transient Nanocomposites Used as Electrical Interconnects for Dissolvable Consumer Electronics.

Rapid development of electronic technology shortens the development time for new products and accelerates the obsolescence of consumer electronics, resulting in the explosive growth of electronic waste that is difficult to recycle and hazardous to the environment and human health. Transient electronics that can dissolve in water may potentially be adopted to tackle the issues of electronic waste; however, promising approaches to yield large-scale and high-performance transient consumer electronics have not yet been developed. Here, the joint effect of galvanic corrosion and redeposition has be

Comparison of dose rounding and drug vial optimization for reducing anticancer drug waste.

Introduction: Numerous injectable anticancer drugs are administered at varying doses based on the body surface area and weight of the patients, often resulting in a certain volume of residual medication. Several anticancer drugs are expensive, thus, their increased use has led to a corresponding increase in drug waste and healthcare costs. Two potential solutions to this issue include drug vial optimization (DVO) and dose rounding (DR). However, DR has rarely been implemented in Japan. Here, we evaluated DVO and DR to assess whether DR could be a viable strategy to reduce the number of antican
