A trichromatic diagnostic pattern in inverse pityriasis versicolor: clinical, dermoscopic, and Wood's lamp correlation.

Dear Editor, Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a superficial mycosis caused by Malassezia species and most often affects the trunk and upper limbs. Flexural or inverse variants, however, may differ markedly from classical morphology due to the influence of moisture, temperature, and friction. These atypical presentations frequently mimic erythrasma, candidal intertrigo, tinea cruris, seborrheic dermatitis, and pigmentary disorders. [...].

Corynebacterium minutissimum bacteremia in an immunocompetent host with cellulitis.

Since its original description in 1961, Corynebacterium minutissimum, the causative agent of erythrasma, has rarely been associated with extracutaneous disease. We report a case of cellulitis and bacteremia due to C. minutissimum. We discuss the treatment of C. minutissimum infection and describe the clinical settings in which isolation of Corynebacterium species from blood cultures should be considered significant.

Severe erythema nodosum due to Behçet's disease responsive to erythromycin.

A patient with severe erythema nodosum due to Behçet's disease is reported on here. Erythema nodosum lesions did not respond to classical treatments; however, they cleared after erythromycin treatment, which was prescribed for the treatment of coincidental erythrasma. Erythromycin treatment appears to be an effective treatment option in erythema nodosum. The hypothetical anti-inflammatory effects of erythromycin, besides its antibiotic properties, are reviewed and discussed to explain such a clinical improvement.

Postoperative Abdominal Infection Caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum.

Corynebacterium minutissimum is a non-spore forming, gram-positive, aerobic or facultative anaerobic bacillus. It is the causative organism of erythrasma, a common superficial infection of skin, which typically presents as reddish-brown macular patches. To date, it has rarely been found to cause invasive disease, although other non-diphtheria corynebacteria are becoming increasingly common as opportunistic pathogens. We report on a rare case of abdominal infection due to C. minutissimum in an immunocompetent adult who was successfully treated with intravenous amoxicillin/sulbactam.

Felix von Bärensprung-A Review of His Life and Work on the Occasion of His 200th Birthday.

Felix von Bärensprung was a pioneer of dermatopathology. His monograph of 1848, "Contributions to the Anatomy and Pathology of the Human Skin," was one of the first publications on that subject. Von Bärensprung also described and named erythrasma, elucidated the pathogenesis of herpes zoster, contributed a comprehensive review of the history of dermatology in an unfinished textbook of skin diseases, and was coauthor, together with Ferdinand Hebra of Vienna, of one of the most influential clinical atlases in the history of dermatology. The 200th anniversary of his birthday in 2022 provides an o

[Fluorescence with Wood's light. Current applications in dermatologic diagnosis, therapy follow-up and prevention].

The invisible long-wave ultraviolet radiation (340-450 nm, max.365 nm) produced by a Wood lamp can help to diagnose dermatoses with a characteristic fluorescence (tinea capitis, erythrasma, tinea versicolor, Pseudomonas infections, porphyrians, and pigmentary alterations). It is also used in the detection of medications that are taken systemically (tetracycline) or that are applied to the skin. Recently, a fluorescence technique with Wood light has been used as a preventive measure to monitor and quantify skin protection at the workplace and to teach workers in high-risk occupations the proper

[Econazole nitrate. In vitro tests and clinical trial].

Econazole-nitrate is a new potent antifungal drug with a broad spectrum against dermatophytes, yeasts and moulds; in addition it is effective against gram-positive bacteria. Econazole nitrate was tested in-vitro for antifungal and anti-microbial properties. In an open trial 75 patients were treated with a 1 percent econazole cream. Cure was achieved in tinea pedis in 91 percent; in tinea genitocruralis in 100 percent and in tinea corporis in 92 percent. The remainder were greatly improved. 22 patients with erythrasma were cured within 3 weeks.

Topically administered clindamycin in the treatment of acne vulgaris and other dermatologic disorders.

Clindamycin is a macrolide antibiotic that has been used orally and topically in the treatment of acne vulgaris. Unfortunately, oral administration is associated with pseudomembranous colitis in up to 10% of patients; consequently, it is no longer a generally accepted form of acne therapy. Topical application is an effective, safer alternative. Topical formulations may be extemporaneously prepared or purchased as a pre-mixed hydroalcoholic solution. Adverse effects associated with topical preparations are few and mostly minor. Topical clindamycin is also used in the treatment of erythrasma, ro

Geographic, polygonal, light-brown scales and fluorescent bright-blue margins: Characteristic dermoscopic clues for granular parakeratosis.

BACKGROUND: Granular parakeratosis (GP) is an uncommon dermatosis characterized by scaly, erythematous to brownish eruptions in intertriginous areas. Diagnosis is challenging and traditionally requires histological confirmation. While dermoscopy and ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy (UVFD) offer non-invasive diagnostic approaches, their characteristic findings in GP remain inadequately defined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically characterize the dermoscopic and UVFD features of GP, with a secondary aim of evaluating their diagnostic utility in differentiating GP from othe

A single method to stain Malassezia furfur and Corynebacterium minutissimum in scales.

The scales are collected by pressing small pieces of scotch tape (about 4 cm length and 2 cm width) onto the lesions and following withdrawal the furfuraceous scales will remain on the glue side. These pieces are then immersed for some minutes in lactophenol-cotton blue stain. Following absorption of the stain the scales are washed in current water to remove the excess of blue stain, dried with filter paper, dehydrated via passage in two bottles containing absolute alcohol and then placed in xylene in a centrifugation tube. The xylene dissolves the scotch tape glue and the scales fall free in

How useful is a biopsy in a case of suspected fungal infection?

In suspected cases of superficial fungal infections, biopsies are not routinely performed. This paper has analyzed some diagnostic features of histopathologic examination in dermatomycosis that are not usually emphasized. The usefulness of light microscopic observation of PAS-stained and plastic-embedded specimens has also been shown.

Bacterial infections of the skin. I: primary and secondary infections.

Bacterial skin infections are important to recognize because we have the means to eradicate almost all of them. Primary skin infections are mainly caused by staphylococci or streptococci. Staphylococci infections present as furuncles and carbuncles, superficial folliculitis, impetigo or rarely the Scalded Skin Syndrome. Streptococcal infections present as impetigo, ecthyma, erysipelas or cellulitis. Corynebacteria causes erythrasma, trichomycosis or pitted keratolysis. Gram-negative primary skin infections, although uncommon, may occur; bacterial cultures are generally necessary for diagnosis.

Tioconazole in the treatment of fungal infections of the skin. An international clinical research program.

In 32 studies involving 1,304 patients tioconazole 1% dermal cream has been shown to be effective and safe in the treatment of a wide variety of superficial fungal infections of the skin and erythrasma. Tioconazole cream is more effective than miconazole nitrate 2% cream in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor and in infections with Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes which cause 70% of dermatophyte infections in man. Data from comparisons with econazole and clotrimazole are too few to allow conclusions to be drawn on relative efficacy. All the creams were easy to apply and t
