Perinatal malnutrition is a critical cause of diseases in offspring. Based on the different rates of organ development, we hypothesised that malnutrition at varying early life stages would have a differential impact on cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and older adults. This study sought to assess the long-term impact of exposure to the 1959-1961 Great Chinese Famine (GCF) during early developmental periods on risks of cardiovascular diseases in the late middle-aged offspring. A total 6, 662 individuals, born between 1958 and 1964, were divided into six groups according to the birth date.

PURPOSE: Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is one of the leading causes of blindness in working-age adults. We have previously shown that the risk of PDR is significantly elevated in individuals with intrauterine exposure to famine. However, the genetic mechanisms mediating this association remain unknown. The aim of the current study was to investigate the molecular underpinnings of famine-related PDR by performing genome-wide association (GWAS) and interaction studies (GWIS).
METHODS: We analysed n = 2925 patients with type 2 diabetes from the DOLCE cohort of Northern Ukraine, of who

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in early life may affect health in later life. The associations between malnutrition and serum uric acid (SUA) and hypertension were inconsistent. The present study aimed to investigate the individual and combined association between famine exposure and serum uric acid and hypertension in middle-aged and older Chinese.
METHODS: Data were selected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) Wave2011. The analytic sample included 9368 individuals aged 45 to 90. Differences between baseline characteristics and famine exposure/SUA level were evaluated

Still's disease, the paradigm of autoinflammation-cum-autoimmunity, predisposes for a cytokine storm with excessive T lymphocyte activation upon viral infection. Loss of function of the purine nucleoside enzyme FAMIN is the sole known cause for monogenic Still's disease. Here we discovered that a FAMIN-enabled purine metabolon in dendritic cells (DCs) restrains CD4+ and CD8+ T cell priming. DCs with absent FAMIN activity prime for enhanced antigen-specific cytotoxicity, IFNγ secretion, and T cell expansion, resulting in excessive influenza A virus-specific responses. Enhanced priming is alread

Acute malnutrition remains a leading cause of under-five mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly in humanitarian crisis settings where conventional therapeutic food supply chains are frequently disrupted. There is an urgent need for locally cultivable, affordable, and nutritionally adequate alternatives to imported ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs). In this review, we examine the nutritional composition, food safety, and production scalability of three duckweed species, namely: Wolffia globosa, Wolffia arrhiza, and Lemna minor, as candidate therapeutic foods in

As natural experiments, famines provide a unique opportunity to test the health consequences of nutritional deprivation during the critical period of early life. Using data on 4972 Chinese born between 1956 and 1963 who participated in a large mental health epidemiology survey conducted between 2001 and 2005, we investigated the potential impact of exposure to the 1959-1961 Chinese Famine in utero and during the early postnatal life on adult mental illness. The risk of mental illness was assessed with the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and eight other risk factors, and the famin

Food insecurity (FI) may increase risk for binge eating through a "feast-or-famine" cycle, where fluctuations in food availability correspond to alternating periods of food restriction and opportunities for binge eating, but research on this topic is limited. To clarify the relationship between food availability and binge eating in the context of FI, this study examined the association between momentary food security level and subsequent binge-eating symptoms among individuals in food-insecure households and investigated how this association differs by factors that may modify the extent to whi

Schizophrenia is a kind of neurodevelopmental disease. Epidemiological data associates schizophrenia with prenatal exposure to famine. Relevant prenatal protein deprivation (PPD) rodent models support this result by observing decreasing prepulse inhibition, altered hippocampal morphology and impaired memory in offspring. All these abnormalities are highly consistent with the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. We developed a prenatal famine rat model by restricting daily diet of the pregnant rat to 50% of low protein diet. A metabolomics study of prefrontal cortex was performed to integrate GC-T

Phytophthora infestans killed the potato crop in Ireland in 1845, leading to widespread famine and the death of more than one million people. Historic herbarium specimens from the famine era were used to understand the pathogen's biology and track its global spread, providing a valuable resource for research. Historic outbreaks in the United States and Europe were caused by the FAM-1 lineage, whereas the US-1 lineage spread later. The famine lineage was basal in the phylogeny and ancestral to modern US-1, Mexican, and globally aggressive lineages. An admixture between the famine lineage and th

The inter-relationship of malnutrition and infections is generally accepted as being synergistic, one promoting the other. Nevertheless, numerous published reports are available which highlight the contrary, that is, antagonism of poor nutrition to infections. This presentation is a review of such publications with emphasis on malaria and malnutrition in the tropics. The data presented suggest that the effect of poor diets on human malaria is related to the level of protein and energy intake, which in turn have important bearings not only on clinical nutrition but also on nutrition policy and

BACKGROUND: Exposure to a pre-natal famine environment has been associated with a persistent decrease in DNA methylation of the IGF2 gene, although study findings on other loci have been highly variable. There have been no studies to date of the relation between pre-natal famine and overall global DNA methylation in adulthood.
METHODS: Our study population includes 350 births with pre-natal exposure to the Dutch famine of 1944-45 selected from three birth clinics, 290 births from these clinics born before or after the famine as unexposed time controls and 307 same-sex siblings of either birth

BACKGROUND: Genetic variation in the Laccase (multicopper oxidoreductase) domain-containing 1 (LACC1) gene has been shown to affect the risk of Crohn's disease, leprosy and, more recently, ulcerative colitis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. LACC1 function appears to promote fatty-acid oxidation, with concomitant inflammasome activation, reactive oxygen species production, and anti-bacterial responses in macrophages. We sought to contribute to elucidating LACC1 biological function by extensive characterization of its expression in human tissues and cells, and through preliminary analyses of t

Famine and the manifestations of acute hunger that result are an unnecessary disgrace to our global society and serious in their political, economic, and social consequences. Probably more damaging is the chronic undernutrition that afflicts such a large proportion of the populations of developing countries and the hidden hungers of iron deficiency, avitaminosis A, and iodine deficiency disorders that are enormously widespread. Famine in the modern world is almost invariably superimposed on chronic undernutrition that is not solved with emergency relief. Adaptation to this undernutrition requi

This study was conducted to provide for the first time systematic data on how intermittent feeding with carbon (ethanol) affects the kinetics of pharmaceuticals degradation in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). The relationship between the degradation rate constants (K) of 36 pharmaceuticals and the length of famine was tested with 12 different feast-famine ratios: For 17 pharmaceuticals, intermittent feeding increased K with a factor of 3-17, while for six other pharmaceuticals, it decreased K. Concerning intermittent loading, three dependencies were detected: 1) for some compounds (e.g., v

In Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production processes using Mixed Microbial Culture (MMC), the success of the culture selection step determines, to a great extent, the PHA accumulation performance obtained in the final PHA production stage. In this study, the effect of the influent substrate concentration (30-60Cmmol VFA/L) on the selection of a PHA-storing culture using a complex feedstock, fermented sugar molasses, was assessed. At 30 and 45Cmmol VFA/L, substrate concentration impacted on the process kinetics through a substrate dependent kinetic limitation effect. However, further increasing t

Famine is not a natural phenomenon. It is the result of an organized collapse of the essential determinants of health. It is part of a long-term political and structural process that goes beyond mere food deprivation by undermining public health, social resilience, and the future development of a population. Acute and chronic malnutrition impair growth, neurocognitive development, and mental health, and can induce epigenetic changes that are transmissible to future generations. Recognizing famine as a form of structural and prolonged violence with transgenerational consequences requires an eth

This article uses an examination of the 1791 plague in Egypt to explore the relationships among disease, famine, flood, drought, and death in late eighteenth-century Egypt. It analyzes how plague functioned as part of a regular biophysical pathology of the environment in which the disease came and went as one iteration in a cycle that included famine, wind, flood, drought, price inflation, and revolt. Using the works of Egyptian chroniclers, archival materials, secondary studies, and traveler accounts, this article integrates plague into the study of the Egyptian environment by showing how it

Childhood exposure to famine represents a severe early-life shock that may shape health, cognitive, and labour-market outcomes across the life course. Yet evidence on its causal consequences in later life remains limited. This study examines whether early-life starvation during the Great Chinese Famine (1959-1961) affected later-life health, cognitive functioning, and labour-market outcomes. The analysis draws on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), collected in 2014 and 2018, and uses a final analytical sample of 15,471 individuals born between 1941 and 1974.

Anorexia nervosa is a puzzling and often tragic disorder which causes the individual to self starve and hyper-exercise. We present a speculative analysis of the disorder which begins by acknowledging and accepting the adaptation to flee famine theory. This theory holds that anorexia nervosa results from activation of an archaic pathway that functioned well during human's nomadic past. We advance this idea by suggesting that the faulty signal indicating there is a famine, arises from misalignment of the circadian/circannual oscillations. Entry and exit from hibernation is dependent on these cyc

Microbial populations frequently experience fluctuations in resource availability, yet how these fluctuations reshape genetic interactions during adaptation remains unclear. Here, we identify the rapid evolution of latent antimicrobial susceptibility in Escherichia coli populations experimentally evolved under repeated feast-famine cycles. Longitudinal population genomics revealed recurrent mutations in the transport genes acrB and ompF, and reconstruction of these mutations demonstrated environment-dependent fitness effects characterized by positive epistasis after 1 day of culture and recipr
