Global trends in antimicrobial resistance on organic and conventional farms.

The important hypothesis that organic livestock management reduces the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance is either fiercely supported or bitterly contested. Yet, empirical evidence supporting this view remains fragmentary, in part because relationships between antimicrobial use and drug resistance vary dramatically across contexts, hosts, pathogens, and country-specific regulations. Here, we synthesize global policies and definitions of 'organic' and ask if organic farming results in notable reductions in the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance when directly examined alongside conventi

Environmental detection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in breed-to-wean farms.

There is a need to develop cost-effective and non-invasive approaches to sample large populations to evaluate the disease status of breeding herds. In this study we assessed the detection of the M. hyopneumoniae genetic material in environmental surfaces and air of farrowing rooms, and skin (udder, snout and vagina) of lactating sows at weaning, in farms having different M. hyopneumoniae infection status (negative, positive sub-clinically infected and positive clinically affected). Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae was detected in air, air deposition particles, dam and stall surfaces of the positive cl

Trichinella Outbreaks on Pig Farms in Poland in 2012-2020.

Trichinella nematodes continue to circulate in various hosts both in the domestic and sylvatic cycles. In the majority of countries in Europe, wild boars have been noticed as a primary source of Trichinella spp. infections in humans. However, in some regions, the meat of pigs containing Trichinella spp. larvae can still be a cause of trichinellosis. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to determine and present actual data on the occurrence of Trichinella spp. on pig farms (Sus scrofa f. domestica) in Poland. In this study, over 194 million pigs, slaughtered for commercial and personal pur

Investigation of Melioidosis Outbreak in Pig Farms in Southern Thailand.

Melioidosis, caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, is a potentially life-threatening infection that can affect humans and a wide variety of animals in the tropics. In December 2017, a swine melioidosis case was discovered during a meat inspection at a privately-owned slaughterhouse in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in southern Thailand. The infection, which continued for several months, caused a dispute about where the disease began. An environmental investigation into two farms-both involved in raising the first infected pig-ensued. Through genetic analysis, the inves

Intensified use of TAI and sexed semen on commercial farms.

The livestock sector has achieved many technological advances, which have resulted in continued improvements in animal production systems and in the reproductive efficiency of herds. The associated use of reproductive biotechnology and genetic improvements combined with adequate sanitary and nutritional management are essential conditions for sustainable intensified animal production and financial autonomy within farms. Timed artificial insemination (TAI) represents one of the strategies with the greatest impact of expansion in providing genetic improvements and increased reproductive efficien

Consequences and economics of metritis in Iranian Holstein dairy farms.

The objectives of this study were (1) to describe the risk factors, incidence, and productive and reproductive consequences of metritis in dairy cows, and (2) to estimate the financial losses associated with metritis using data gathered from 4 Holstein dairy farms in Isfahan, Iran. Calving records from March 2008 to December 2013, comprising 43,488 calvings, were included in the data set. The effects of metritis on productive and reproductive performance were analyzed using a mixed linear model for primiparous and multiparous cows separately and in an overall data set (all cows combined), wher

Understanding sources of sea lice for salmon farms in Chile.

The decline of fisheries over recent decades and a growing human population has coincided with an increase in aquaculture production. As farmed fish densities increase, so have their rates of infectious diseases, as predicted by the theory of density-dependent disease transmission. One of the pathogen that has increased with the growth of salmon farming is sea lice. Effective management of this pathogen requires an understanding of the spatial scale of transmission. We used a two-part multi-scale model to account for the zero-inflated data observed in weekly sea lice abundance levels on rainbo

Welfare assessment in broiler farms: transect walks versus individual scoring.

Current scientific approaches to welfare assessment in broilers are based on individual sampling that can be time consuming under field conditions. On the other hand, farmers conduct routine checks based on walks through the house to screen birds' health condition. We adapted the walks through following line transect methodology used in wildlife studies to explore their feasibility as a welfare assessment tool. The aim of this study was to compare broiler welfare assessed by individual sampling and transect walks. We evaluated 6 identically managed flocks. For individual sampling, we collected

[Slaughter findings feedback systems--its use for farms of origin?].

Over a period of 22 months 13 official meat inspection authorities examined a number of 152 520 swine at an Austrian slaughterhouse for pathologic-anatomic changes (five parameters). Of those veterinarians whose reliability in the recording of findings was a given, the results were analysed by employing a mathematical model which assessed whether the activities of 25 attending veterinarians and 223 farmers actually lead to an improvement of animal health in their livestock. Mild pneumonia was registered in 14.5% of swine; no attending veterinarians had any influence whatsoever on the occurrenc

[Analysis of mating management on pig farms using 'DEKT PERFEKT'].

'DEKT PERFEKT' is software for the analysis of mating management on breeding and multiplier pig farms. It can be used in combination with other software already on the market and is user-friendly. So far it has been used on several farms of which one has been dealt with in detail in this article. It shows how the software can be used in the analysis of disappointing technical results due to inefficient mating management. Intensified supervision with the help of 'DEKT PERFEKT' has led to a marked improvement of technical results on pig breeding farms.

Biomonitoring of mercury in farming communities of Brazil.

Human exposure to mercury (Hg) remains a global public health concern, particularly in rural and agricultural communities, where biomonitoring data are scarce. This study assessed total Hg concentrations in blood and urine samples from 290 farmers living in 19 communities in the southwestern region of Espírito Santo State, Brazil. Additionally, the stable isotopic composition of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) was analyzed in blood to investigate associations with dietary patterns. We also evaluated associations with demographic and lifestyle factors, including age, sex, smoking status, and

Farm animal coronaviruses: the solution is in vaccines.

RNA-containing coronaviruses are widespread in nature and can infect a number of vertebrates. Animals are potential sources of human coronaviruses diseases, and interspecies infection by animal coronaviruses has been recorded several times. Such a transmission may have caused the COVID-19 pandemic. The study and control of the spread of farm animals' coronavirus infections is very important, due to the constant close contact between humans and farm animals. Vaccination remains the key to preventing animal diseases and limiting the further spread and transmission of coronavirus infections among

Review of anthrax: A disease of farm animals.

Anthrax is a rapidly fatal infectious disease affecting herbivores and people. In the farm animals, cattle and sheep are more susceptible, followed by goats and horses, while dwarf pigs and Algerian sheep are relatively resistant. Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, produces spores and persists for decades in the soil, initiating an outbreak through a favorable climate shift. Anthrax is enzootic in many Asian and African countries, and is reported in Australia, some parts of Europe, and America. The clinical courses of this disease in animals are peracute, acute, subacute, and

Löffler syndrome on a Louisiana pig farm.

Löffler syndrome, a fulminant eosinophilic pneumonitis associated with the larval migratory phase of human parasites, is rarely reported in the United States. A previously healthy 8-year-old male was hospitalized with tachypnea, cough, hypoxemia, and fever of one week's duration. History revealed exposure to pigs on his family's farm in southernmost Louisiana, where the patient was responsible for cleaning the farm's pigpens. His fingernails were soiled and extremely short, with the edge of the nail bed exposed secondary to onychophagia. Laboratory evaluation demonstrated peripheral eosinophil

Antibiotic-resistant vibrios in farmed shrimp.

Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern was determined in 100 strains of Vibrio isolated from the Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp and identified phenotypically. A high antibiotic-resistance index (75%) was observed, with the following phenotypic profiles: monoresistance (n = 42), cross-resistance to β-lactams (n = 20) and multiple resistance (n = 13). Plasmid resistance was characterized for penicillin (n = 11), penicillin + ampicillin (n = 1), penicillin + aztreonam (n = 1), and ampicillin (n = 1). Resistance to antimicrobial drugs by the other strains (n = 86) was possibly mediated by chromosomal g
