The present pandemic caused by the SARS COV-2 coronavirus is still ongoing, although it is registered a slowdown in the spread for new cases. The main environmental route of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is through droplets and fomites or surfaces, but there is a potential risk of virus spread also in smaller aerosols during various medical procedures causing airborne transmission. To date, no information is available on the risk of contagion from the peritoneal fluid with which surgeons can come into contact during the abdominal surgery on COVID-19 patients. We have investigated the presence of

Molluscum contagiosum, caused by a double-stranded DNA virus, is found world-wide, affecting humans as well as other primates and marsupials. In humans, a biphasic incidence occurs with peak infection rates among young children and young adults. In children, infection is spread by direct contact or through fomites, with lesions predominating on the trunk, extremities, and face. In young adults, this disease is spread primarily through sexual contact. Periocular infection can cause secondary chronic follicular conjunctivitis, superficial keratitis, and punctal occlusion. Although many modes of

Background: Massilia virus (MASV) is a phlebovirus isolated from Phlebotomus perniciosus in various regions of southwestern Europe. It is closely related to human pathogens such as Toscana virus and sandfly fever Naples virus. The natural cycle of phleboviruses is poorly understood. Indeed, experimental studies demonstrate that transovarial and sexual transmission are not efficient enough for the maintenance of the virus in nature and to date there is no convincing evidence that a species of vertebrates is the reservoir of the virus. Here, we studied various transmission routes of MASV taking

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) has traditionally been considered a sexually transmitted infection, yet accumulating evidence demonstrates that HPV can be acquired through multiple non-sexual routes. Understanding these alternative transmission pathways is critical for interpreting HPV detection in non-sexually active populations and for refining public health strategies.
METHODS: This review synthesizes current evidence on non-sexual HPV transmission routes, including vertical (transplacental, intrapartum), perinatal oropharyngeal colonization, fomite contamination, breast milk transm

BACKGROUND: The public health risk of microbial contamination of fomites is evident from the numerous fomite-associated outbreaks that have occurred in several countries. Despite the high-touch nature of door handles across various settings, no comprehensive synthesis of contamination rates and microbial profiles has been performed.
AIM: The aim of this work was to assess the prevalence and types of microbial contamination on door handles in public and healthcare settings.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for studies published up to July 2024. A systemat

BACKGROUND: Surface contamination via hands plays an important role in pathogen spread in public spaces, particularly where numerous people interact with shared surfaces and objects. This study aimed to identify frequently touched surfaces, examine their interconnections, and evaluate the spread of a surrogate virus in a hotel lobby.
METHODS: In a working hotel lobby (in Arizona, USA) a total of 30 h of observation were performed to identify the surfaces and objects touched by hotel users. The observed area included the lobby entrance, check-in desk and other communal areas. The sequence of t

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prevalent prion disease affecting cervids. CWD is thought to be transmitted through direct animal contact or by indirect exposure to contaminated environmental fomites. Other mechanisms of propagation such as vertical and maternal transmissions have also been suggested using naturally and experimentally infected animals. Here, we describe the detection of CWD prions in naturally-infected, farmed white-tailed deer (WTD) fetal tissues using the Protein Misfolding Cyclic Amplification (PMCA) technique. Prion seeding activity was identified in a variety of gestat

Chlamydia pneumoniae causes respiratory tract infections, and it is transmitted by air and fomites. It is probably more frequent than it is described, due to asymptomatic or mild symptomatic patients. They respond to macrolides, tetracyclines and quinolones, though patients may recover slowly. An increase of the incidence of pneumonia, caused by Chlamydia pneumoniae, is shown in recent multicenter surveys, being even more frequent than Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Recently it has been demonstrated an association between coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis with Ch

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, such as infliximab, are highly effective in the management of rheumatoid arthritis; however, these agents are associated with an increased risk of infectious complications. Individuals developing coccidiomycosis pneumonia frequently acquire this while residing in endemic regions. We present a patient with rheumatoid arthritis treated with infliximab who developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) from coccidiomycosis pneumonia while residing in a non-endemic region near the Texas-Louisiana border and was successfully treated with antifungal ther

Molluscum contagiosum is a poxvirus infection of the skin that is commonly observed in children. The molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) expresses several gene-products that are involved in its pathogenesis and evasion of the host immune system. MCV can be transmitted both to other sites of the body and to other individuals through direct physical contact as well as fomites. While diagnosis is generally straightforward clinically, management of molluscum contagiosum is controversial. Several treatment options are available for the destruction of individual lesions, but there is insufficient evid

Antibodies to Herpesvirus hominis (HVH) types 1 and 2 were determined by a micro-neutralisation method in 37 children with kwashiorkor, 16 with marasmus, and in 64 well-nourished control children. All the children were aged between 1 and 4 years. The prevalence of antibodies was similar in the two sexes and at different ages. HVH-1 antibodies were present in 51% of children with kwashiorkor, in 44% with marasmus, and in 26% of well-nourished children, reflecting the very poor socioeconomic conditions of malnourished children. HVH-2 antibodies too were present in about 19% of children with kwas

An outbreak of acute keratoconjunctivitis involving 27 patients occurred in the Department of Ophthalmology, Kurume University Hospital. Adenoviral DNA was detected in four inpatients, one outpatient and one healthcare worker. Sequence-based typing of adenoviral DNA indicated serotype 3 from one inpatient, the rest being serotype 37. At a later stage of the outbreak adenoviral DNA types 37 and/or 3 were also detected from almost all environmental instruments and commonly used eye drops, despite thorough disinfection of the environment and enforcement of various infection control measures. The

On February 8, 2007, the District of Columbia Department of Health (DCDOH) was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis in an elementary school (prekindergarten through sixth grade). The school nurse reported that 27 students and two staff members had become ill during February 4--8 with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; because symptoms lasted <48 hours, a viral etiology was suspected. DCDOH recommended two preinvestigation interventions, which were implemented the same evening (February 8): 1) more thorough handwashing and 2) bleach cleaning of all shared environmental surfaces with a

Meningococci are regarded as being unlikely to survive outside of their human host although this has possibly been more assumed than demonstrated. Seven strains of meningococci were tested for their ability to survive on glass or plastic while retaining expression of their capsule and important outer membrane proteins. A known number of colony-forming units of each strain were dried onto glass and onto plastic and tested for viability over time. Survival on glass was significantly better than on plastic (P<0.0001). Isolates of the New Zealand epidemic strain, B:4:P1.7-2,4 survived better on gl

Molluscum contagiosum is an infection caused by a poxvirus that gives rise to small, benign, white, pink, or flesh-colored, umbilicated, raised papules or nodules located in the epidermal layer of the skin. The disease can be transmitted by direct bodily contact including sexual activity, fomites, or self-inoculation. There has been continued debate about whether physicians should actively treat molluscum contagiosum. Many dermatologists recommend treatment to reduce the incidence of contagious transfer and reduce self-inoculation. Furthermore, individuals with weakened immune systems (eg, pat

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has greatly stressed the global community, exposing vulnerabilities in the supply chains for disinfection materials, personal protective equipment, and medical resources worldwide. Disinfection methods based on cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) technologies offer an intriguing solution to many of these challenges because they are easily deployable and do not require resource-constrained consumables or reagents needed for conventional decontamination practices. CAP technologies have shown great promise for a wide range of medical applications from wo

The infection of health care workers during the 2013 to 2016 Ebola outbreak raised concerns about fomite transmission. In the wake of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, investigations are ongoing to determine the role of fomites in coronavirus transmission as well. The bacteriophage phi 6 has a phospholipid envelope and is commonly used in environmental studies as a surrogate for human enveloped viruses. The persistence of phi 6 was evaluated as a surrogate for Ebola virus (EBOV) and coronaviruses on porous and nonporous hospital surfaces. Phi 6 was suspended in a body fluid sim

Mpox is an emerging zoonotic disease that has spread rapidly around the world. It has been declared a public health emergency of international concern by the World Health Organization. This review is an update for dermatologists on the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of Mpox. The primary mode of transmission in the current outbreak is close physical contact during sexual activity. Although most of the initial cases were reported in men who have sex with men, anyone who has close contact with an infected person or contaminated fomites is at risk. Classic prodromal

Species Pseudocowpox virus (PCPV; family Poxviridae) is known to cause pustular cutaneous disease in cattle. We describe an outbreak of pseudocowpox with an unusual clinical picture in a free-stall dairy herd of ~80 cows. Approximately 90% of the cows had vesicles, erosions, papules, and scabs on the vulva and vaginal mucosa. Histologic analysis of biopsy tissues indicated a primary, although not specified, viral infection. Transmission electron microscopy revealed parapoxvirus particles in both tissue and vesicular materials. Deep sequencing analysis of extracted DNA from swabbed vesicle area
