Sealing caries in primary molars: randomized control trial, 5-year results.

The Hall Technique (HT) is a method for managing carious primary molars. Decay is sealed under pre-formed metal crowns without any caries removal, tooth preparation, or local anesthesia. The aim of this study was to compare HT clinical/radiographic failure rates with General Dental Practitioners' (GDPs) standard (control) restorations. We conducted a split-mouth, randomized control trial (132 children, aged 3-10 yrs, GDPs n = 17) in Scotland. There were 264 study teeth with initial lesions, 42% of which were radiographically > half-way into dentin, and 67% of which had Class II restorations. T

Failure of non-vacuum steam sterilization processes for dental handpieces.

BACKGROUND: Dental handpieces are used in critical and semi-critical operative interventions. Although some dental professional bodies recommend that dental handpieces are sterilized between patient use there is a lack of clarity and understanding of the effectiveness of different steam sterilization processes. The internal mechanisms of dental handpieces contain narrow lumens (0.8-2.3 mm) which can impede the removal of air and ingress of saturated steam required to achieve sterilization conditions. AIM: To identify the extent of sterilization failure in dental handpieces using a non-vacuum

Incidental findings in a consecutive series of digital panoramic radiographs.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of incidental findings (IFs) on digital dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) of asymptomatic patients attending a general dental practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 6,252 consecutive digital (photostimulatable phosphor) DPRs of patients who visited a Canadian general dental practice for a complete new patient examination. The IFs were grouped into dental-related anomalies, radiopacities and radiopacities in the jaws, changes in the shape of the condyles, and other findings in the jaws, such as tonsill

A survey of disease changes observed on dental panoramic tomographs taken of patients attending a periodontology clinic.

Dental panoramic tomographs (DPTs) were taken consecutively of 500 patients referred to a specialist periodontal department by general dental practitioners in order to assist in the diagnosis of the severity of the periodontal disease. Analysis of these DPTs showed 316 (63.2%) of these patients to have some form of dental abnormality unrelated to periodontal disease. The DPT was shown to be a valuable screening technique for clinical practice.

The elephant in the room: addressing systemic inequalities in dental healthcare.

The epidemiology of dental caries has changed over the last decades. Historically, repairing the ravages of dental caries has been the backbone of general dental practice. This opinion article highlights the challenges of moving from a repair service to a preventive service from the viewpoint of: what is the future health market? It also touches on the negative aspects of how organisations manage the challenges of the change process.

Temporomandibular disorder: A guide for general dental practitioners.

The presentation of patients with symptoms associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is a common finding in general dental practice. The management of patients with TMDs is often complicated by its multifactorial aetiology. This paper aims to provide a guide for dental practitioners to the clinical examination, diagnosis, and recognition of red flags in relation to TMDs and inform the busy practitioner when to refer patients presenting with TMDs for specialist/secondary care management.

Oral fungal infections: an update for the general practitioner.

Oral candidosis is the most common fungal infection encountered in general dental practice. It manifests in a variety of clinical presentations which may mimic more sinister diseases, and can occasionally be refractory to treatment requiring the attention of an oral medicine specialist. Management of oral candidosis should always include a thorough investigation of underlying predisposing conditions, as the disease often presents when the patient is systemically compromised. This update highlights the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and management strategies of oral Candidal lesions commo

Dental extraction in a patient with undiagnosed Von Willebrand's Disease: a case report.

Dental extractions are a common part of general dental practice. While dentists routinely screen for medical contraindications during the preoperative assessment, undiagnosed coagulopathies have the potential to severely complicate a seemingly routine extraction. We report a case of surgical removal of a mandibular third molar in a patient with undiagnosed Von Willebrand Disease.

[Holistic diagnosis and treatment concept of temporomandibular disorders oriented to general practice thinking].

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is a common oral disease characterized by complex etiology, diverse symptomatology and varied treatment approaches. When managing TMD patients, dentists should adopt a generalist mindset, grasp the core connotation of "patient-centeredness", guided by the biopsychosocial model, and make a comprehensive judgment from a multi-dimensional, multi-systemic, and multi-factorial perspective to reach a reasonable etiological analysis and an accurate diagnosis, in order to realize the personalized and holistic treatment of TMD under the guidance of general practice thi

A Survey of the Management of Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders by General Dental Practitioners in Southern Brazil.

PURPOSE: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are recognized as one of the most controversial topics in dentistry, despite the fact that both basic science and clinical researchers have currently reached some degree of consensus. This study aimed to conduct a questionnaire-based survey about the management of TMD patients by general dental practitioners (GDPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred fifty-one GDPs with a private practice in a city of southern Brazil were included, independent of school of origin, gender, graduation year, and curriculum content. All participants were administered a q

Identifying core competencies for community oral health practice among dental hygienists: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Community oral health practice increasingly requires dental hygienists to perform prevention-oriented, population-based, and interprofessional roles beyond traditional chairside clinical care. However, existing competency frameworks primarily emphasize clinical practice or general professional competencies, and an integrated competency framework specifically designed for community oral health practice remains unavailable. This study aimed to identify core competencies for community oral health practice among dental hygienists through a scoping review. METHODS: A scoping review was
