The structure and subtypes of gambling activities: Genetic, psychiatric and behavioral etiologies of gambling frequency.

The multitude of gambling activities has given rise to heterogeneous ways of analyzing these behaviors and may partially underlie the lack of replication in gambling research. The current study used complementary analyses to investigate the structure, typology and etiology of gambling behaviors in a discovery sample of 2,116 twins (54.86% female; Mage = 24.90) and a replication sample of 619 siblings (30.37% female; Mage = 28.00). Our approach was twofold. First, we used confirmatory factor analyses to investigate the structure across the frequency of eight gambling activities. Second, we used

Genetically Distinct Behavioral Modules Underlie Natural Variation in Thermal Performance Curves.

Thermal reaction norms pervade organismal traits as stereotyped responses to temperature, a fundamental environmental input into sensory and physiological systems. Locomotory behavior represents an especially plastic read-out of animal response, with its dynamic dependence on environmental stimuli presenting a challenge for analysis and for understanding the genomic architecture of heritable variation. Here we characterize behavioral reaction norms as thermal performance curves for the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae, using a collection of 23 wild isolate genotypes and 153 recombinant inbred

Heterogeneous stock rats: a model to study the genetics of despair-like behavior in adolescence.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex illness caused by both genetic and environmental factors. Antidepressant resistance also has a genetic component. To date, however, very few genes have been identified for major depression or antidepressant resistance. In this study, we investigated whether outbred heterogeneous stock (HS) rats would be a suitable model to uncover the genetics of depression and its connection to antidepressant resistance. The Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat, one of the eight founders of the HS, is a recognized animal model of juvenile depression and is resistant to fluoxetin

A medium density genetic map and QTL for behavioral and production traits in Japanese quail.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral traits such as sociability, emotional reactivity and aggressiveness are major factors in animal adaptation to breeding conditions. In order to investigate the genetic control of these traits as well as their relationships with production traits, a study was undertaken on a large second generation cross (F2) between two lines of Japanese Quail divergently selected on their social reinstatement behavior. All the birds were measured for several social behaviors (social reinstatement, response to social isolation, sexual motivation, aggression), behaviors measuring the emoti

Undifferentiated carcinoma of pancreas: a rare entity with aggressive behavior and possible genetic link.

UNLABELLED: An aggressive undifferentiated carcinoma of pancreas is a rare tumor, especially with a strong personal and family history of malignant melanoma. Limited literature review and few case reports described a genetic association between distinct types of pancreatic cancer and malignant melanoma. CASE REPORT: We present an uncommon case of an aggressive undifferentiated carcinoma of the pancreas in a 50-year-old Caucasian female. Initially, she presented with intermittent epigastric postprandial pain and mild nausea. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed a 5 cm heterogenous

Personality, behavior and environmental features associated with OXTR genetic variants in British mothers.

BACKGROUND: It is assumed that the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) is associated with factors that are related to features of reproduction as well as the currently emerging fields of mood and emotional response. METHODS: We analysed data from over 8000 mothers who participated in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). We determined reproductive, emotional and personality differences related to the two SNPs rs53576 and rs2254298 of the oxytocin receptor gene to determine whether there was evidence in this population for: (i) associations with emotional and personality diff

Anti-epileptogenesis: Electrophysiology, diffusion tensor imaging and behavior in a genetic absence model.

The beneficial effects of chronic and early pharmacological treatment with ethosuximide on epileptogenesis were studied in a genetic absence epilepsy model comorbid for depression. It was also investigated whether there is a critical treatment period and treatment length. Cortical excitability in the form of electrical evoked potentials, but also to cortico-thalamo-cortical network activity (spike-wave discharges, SWD and afterdischarges), white matter changes representing extra cortico-thalamic functions and depressive-like behavior were investigated. WAG/Rij rats received either ethosuximide

Genetic, hormonal, and metabolomic influences on social behavior and sex preference of XXY mice.

XXY men (Klinefelter syndrome) are testosterone deficient, socially isolated, exhibit impaired gender identity, and may experience more homosexual behaviors. Here, we characterize social behaviors in a validated XXY mouse model to understand mechanisms. Sociability and gender preference were assessed by three-chambered choice tasks before and after castration and after testosterone replacement. Metabolomic activities of brain and blood were quantified through fractional synthesis rates of palmitate and ribose (GC-MS). XXY mice exhibit greater sociability than XY littermates, particularly for m

Test- and behavior-specific genetic factors affect WKY hypoactivity in tests of emotionality.

Inbred Wistar-Kyoto rats consistently display hypoactivity in tests of emotional behavior. We used them to test the hypothesis that the genetic factors underlying the behavioral decision-making process will vary in different environmental contexts. The contexts used were the open-field test (OFT), a novel environment with no explicit threats present, and the defensive-burying test (DB), a habituated environment into which a threat has been introduced. Rearing, a voluntary behavior was measured in both tests, and our study was the first to look for genetic loci affecting grooming, a relatively

Genetic differences in the synthesis and reception of noradrenaline in the mouse brain and behavior in a novel environment.

The activity of tyrosine hydroxylase, the key enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis, was studied along with adrenoceptor density in the brains of male CBA/Lac, BALB/cLac, and C57BL/6J mice, which show different responses to novel environments. C57BL mice showed the highest level of movement activity and the lowest level of emotionality in a novel environment. Mice of this line also showed the highest brainstem tyrosine hydroxylase activity. At the same time, the density of beta-adrenoceptors in the cortex and hypothalamus of C57BL mice was lower than in the other two lines of mice, while the de

Genetic disorders of vision revealed by a behavioral screen of 400 essential loci in zebrafish.

We examined optokinetic and optomotor responses of 450 zebrafish mutants, which were isolated previously based on defects in organ formation, tissue patterning, pigmentation, axon guidance, or other visible phenotypes. These strains carry single point mutations in >400 essential loci. We asked which fraction of the mutants develop blindness or other types of impairments specific to the visual system. Twelve mutants failed to respond in either one or both of our assays. Subsequent histological and electroretinographic analysis revealed unique deficits at various stages of the visual pathway, in

Altered behavioral responses mediated by serotonin receptors in the genetically dystonic (dt) rat.

The genetically dystonic (dt) rat is an animal model of dystonia that displays sustained abnormal movements that include: torticollis, clasping of the hindlimbs, rigidity of the limbs, and contortions of the trunk. Since serotonin (5-HT) has been shown to be involved in some animal models of movement disorders, the functional responsiveness of the 5-HT system in dt rats and phenotypical normal littermates was examined by administering 5-HT agonists selective for different receptor subtypes and observing behavioral responses associated with the activation of specific 5-HT receptor subtypes. The

Genetic Predisposition and Infidelity: From Molecular Variation to Relationship Behavior-A Narrative Review.

Trust and pair bonding are central to human social life, and their violation through infidelity carries a measurable psychological cost. Whether individual differences in such behavior are partly genetic remains contested, because the available evidence combines heterogeneous phenotypes with candidate gene designs of limited statistical power. This narrative review synthesizes genetic evidence on infidelity, pair bonding, responses to trust violation and indirect traits such as novelty seeking, grading it by evidentiary strength. Twin modeling of extrapair mating yields broad-sense heritabilit

Genetic Modeling of Dyadic Behavioral Traits: Implications for Estimation and Interpretation of Variance Components.

Studying the genomic control of dyadic social interactions is gaining traction in animal genetics. However, genetic modeling of social interactions poses several challenges, one of which is whether social interactions should be treated as dyadic traits or as aggregated traits at the individual level. In this study, we systematically compared two approaches: dyadic models using dyadic traits and marginal models using marginally aggregated traits and we derived the algebraic relationships between their variance components. In the application, we used a published dataset on post-mixing aggression
