Growth and psychomotor development of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is one of the most common hereditary degenerative neuromuscular diseases and caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene. The objective of the retrospective study was to describe growth and psychomotor development of patients with DMD and to detect a possible genotype-phenotype correlation. Data from 263 patients with DMD (mean age 7.1 years) treated at the Departments of Pediatric Neurology in three German University Hospitals was assessed with respect to body measurements (length, weight, body mass index BMI, head circumference OFC), motor and cognitive devel

Aberrant growth and pattern formation in Peromyscus hybrid placental development.

Crosses between the North American deer mouse species Peromyscus maniculatus (BW) and P. polionotus (PO) produce dramatic asymmetric developmental effects. BW females mated to PO males (female bw × male po) produce viable growth-retarded offspring. In contrast, PO females mated to BW males (female PO × male BW) produce overgrown but dysmorphic conceptuses. Most female PO × male BW offspring are dead by midgestation; those surviving to later time points display numerous defects reminiscent of several diseases. The hybrid effects are particularly pronounced in the placenta. Here we examine place

G protein-coupled receptors in child development, growth, and maturation.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) constitute a large family of cell membrane receptors that affect embryogenesis, development, and child physiology, and they are targets for approved drugs and those still in development. The sensitivity of GPCRs to their respective extracellular hormones, neurotransmitters, and environmental stimulants, as well as their interaction with other receptors and intracellular signaling proteins (such as receptor activity-modifying proteins), contribute to variations in child development, growth, and maturation. Here, we summarize current knowledge about the mechan

Fibroblast growth factor signaling in cranial suture development and pathogenesis.

Apert, Pfeiffer and Crouzon syndromes are congenital craniosynostosis syndromes caused by mutations that perturb the level of fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) signaling. The cellular and molecular impact of these mutations have been studied in vitro and in animal models in vivo. Here, I highlight the complexity of the FGF/FGFR signaling system and review the candidate modifiers responsible for regulating the levels of FGF/FGFR signaling in tissues. I also review what we have learned from the phenotypic analysis of mice that model these craniosynostosis syndromes and discuss some in viv

Growth of the nasopharynx and adenoidal development in Brazilian subjects.

The purpose of this research was to study the growth of the nasopharynx and adenoid development. Lateral cephalometric radiographs obtained from 320 white Brazilian subjects between 4 and 16 years of age were used. All the participants were nose breathers and none of them had previously undergone adenoidectomy. Tracings were made from the radiographs and cephalometric measurements were performed. The results showed that adenoid sagital thickness is larger in the age group 4 - 5 years and decreases progressively. There is a slight increase in the age group 10 - 11 years, but afterwards the decr

Epidermal growth factor reverses antiandrogen induced cryptorchidism and epididymal development.

Epidermal growth factor, an androgen responsive paracrine factor, administered to pregnant mice has been reported to result in persistent wolffian ducts in female offspring. This fact led us to investigate whether epidermal growth factor can reverse the undescended testes and epididymal abnormalities associated with time specific flutamide administration. Timed pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with flutamide (undescended testes 74% and epididymal anomalies 53%) or flutamide plus epidermal growth factor (undescended testes 24% and epididymal anomalies 9%). The decrease in undescended t

Growth and development in white patients with sickle cell diseases.

We have evaluated height, weight, bone age, somatomedin-C levels, and pubertal development in 114 Sicilian patients affected by sickle cell diseases (SCDs). Thirty-one had homozygous sickle hemoglobin (SS), 55 S-beta 0 thalassemia, and 28 S-beta + thalassemia. In both children and adults, the mean height and weight were approximately 1 SD below the normal mean for age. The height was below the normal range only in a few subjects (8 children and 4 adult women). Somatomedin-C levels were within the normal range in most of the patients (37/44 children and 17/22 adults). Bone age revealed a slight

Analysis of megakaryocyte growth and development factor (thrombopoietin) effects on blast cell and megakaryocyte growth in myelodysplasia.

Thrombocytopenia is a frequent feature of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) that could be improved by the use of recombinant human megakaryocyte growth and development factor (rHuMGDF). Using short-term liquid cultures and progenitor assays, we have found that rHuMGDF stimulated DNA synthesis and potentiated leukemic cluster growth of bone marrow mononuclear cells in 10/38 MDS cases (26%). Cytogenetically malignant colonies were detectable in rHuMGDF-stimulated cultures (n=3) by fluorescence in situ hybridization. rHuMGDF was able to stimulate CFU-MK formation in 45% of the samples tested. The Nuclear Redox Code: Orchestrating Growth, Development, and Stress Resilience.

Reactive oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur species (RONSs) are essential signaling molecules in plants, with their production highly compartmentalized within the cell. In this review, we advance the concept of the "nuclear redox code," a framework in which the plant cell nucleus functions as a signaling hub that actively curates its own redox environment and translates oxidative signals into cellular decisions. We summarize current knowledge on the maintenance of nuclear redox homeostasis, the oxidative modification of nuclear proteins and chromatin, and how these modifications influence gene expre

Vitamin B12 supplementation for growth, development, and cognition in children.

RATIONALE: Vitamin B12 deficiency is an important public health problem in children, and has been associated with anaemia and impaired growth, cognition, and development. Vitamin B12 deficiency may develop in children due to lower content in breast milk, low dietary intake, and as requirements increase with age. Vitamin B12 supplementation may confer benefits to child growth and development, due to its role in DNA synthesis and methylation, red blood cell formation, and folate metabolism. However, no systematic reviews have been conducted to examine the effects of vitamin B12 supplementation i

Fetal development and growth of the human neck axial musculature.

Neck epaxial muscles, which are differentiated for suspending the head, occupy a large space posterior to the cervical lordosis. Limited information exists regarding developmental process that determines the muscle fiber direction and bony attachment of neck epaxial muscles. We examined histological sections of 28 human fetuses aged approximately 7-18 weeks (crown-rump length, 20-150 mm). In place of the underdeveloped lordosis, the transverse process of cervical vertebrae was shifted anteriorly at the cervicothoracic junction. The semispinalis and longissimus were distinguished by the directi

Role of protein S-nitrosylation in plant growth and development.

In plants, nitric oxide (NO) has been widely accepted as a signaling molecule that plays a role in different processes. Among the most relevant pathways by which NO and its derivatives realize their biological functions, post-translational protein modifications are worth mentioning. Protein S-nitrosylation has been the most studied NO-dependent regulatory mechanism; it is emerging as an essential mechanism for transducing NO bioactivity in plants and animals. In recent years, the research of protein S-nitrosylation in plant growth and development has made significant progress, including proces

The crucial role of centrioles in tooth growth and development.

BACKGROUND: Tooth development hinged on reciprocal interactions between enamel and dentin, shaping tooth structures. Centrioles influenced cellular direction, critical for stem cell differentiation. Aberrant centrioles contributed to conditions like Huntington's disease and cancers. Centriole-related gene mutations, like Pericentrin and Centrosomal P4.1-associated protein (CPAP), led to tooth abnormalities, microcephaly. Our study explored the role of centrioles in ameloblasts during molar growth, shedding light on tooth development mechanisms. METHODS: Tissue sections underwent immunofluores

The role of ipRGCs in ocular growth and myopia development.

The increasing global prevalence of myopia calls for elaboration of the pathogenesis of this disease. Here, we show that selective ablation and activation of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) in developing mice induced myopic and hyperopic refractive shifts by modulating the corneal radius of curvature (CRC) and axial length (AL) in an opposite way. Melanopsin- and rod/cone-driven signals of ipRGCs were found to influence refractive development by affecting the AL and CRC, respectively. The role of ipRGCs in myopia progression is evidenced by attenuated form-deprivat

Research progress of m6A regulation during animal growth and development.

Environmental factors, genetic factors, and epigenetics are involved in animal growth and development. Among them, methylation is one of the abundant modifications of epigenetics. N6-methyladenosine(m6A) is extensive in cellular RNA, of which mRNA is the most common internal modification. m6A modification regulates life activities dynamically and reversibly, including expressed genes, RNA metabolism, and protein translation. The m6A modifications are closely related to human diseases involving heart failure, tumors, and cancer. It is relatively in-depth in the medical field. However, there are

Variants in nuclear factor I genes influence growth and development.

The nuclear factor one (NFI) site-specific DNA-binding proteins represent a family of transcription factors that are important for the development of multiple organ systems, including the brain. During brain development in mice, the expression patterns of Nfia, Nfib, and Nfix overlap, and knockout mice for each of these exhibit overlapping brain defects, including megalencephaly, dysgenesis of the corpus callosum, and enlarged ventricles, which implies a common but not redundant function in brain development. In line with these models, human phenotypes caused by haploinsufficiency of NFIA, NFI
