Efficacy of a task-based training approach in the rehabilitation of three children with poor handwriting quality: a pilot study.

Evidence suggests that task-based training approaches can improve the performance of children with handwriting difficulties. The present case study tests the efficacy of the Handwriting Task Program (HTP). Three male children (9-10 yr. old) with poor handwriting skills and different developmental disorders participated in the HTP, twice per week, for 13 wk. Handwriting legibility was assessed through the Concise Evaluation Scale for Children's Handwriting, and fine motor performance and handwriting speed were evaluated at pre- and post-treatment with the Visual Motor Integration Test and the B

A Deep Learning Framework for Early Parkinson's Disease Detection: Leveraging Spiral and Wave Handwriting Tasks with EfficientNetV2-S.

Background: Early detection of Parkinson's disease (PD) is vital for improving patient outcomes, yet traditional diagnostic methods often depend on subjective clinical evaluations. Methods: This study proposes a novel deep learning framework for PD detection based on spiral and wave handwriting patterns from the PaHaW dataset. A comprehensive preprocessing pipeline is implemented, integrating histogram equalization and Canny edge detection. The processed spiral and wave images are evaluated independently using a fine-tuned EfficientNetV2-S architecture for binary classification. In addition to

EMD-based data augmentation method applied to handwriting data for the diagnosis of Essential Tremor using LSTM networks.

The increasing capacity of today's technology represents great advances in diagnosing diseases using standard procedures supported by computer science. Deep learning techniques are able to extract the characteristics of temporal signals to study their patterns and diagnose diseases such as essential tremor. However, these techniques require a large amount of data to train the neural network and achieve good results, and the more data the network has, the more accurate the final model implemented. In this work we propose the use of a data augmentation technique to improve the accuracy of a Long

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation to the cerebellum improves handwriting and cyclic drawing kinematics in focal hand dystonia.

There is increasing evidence that the cerebellum has a role in the pathophysiology of primary focal hand dystonia and might provide an intervention target for non-invasive brain stimulation to improve function of the affected hand. The primary objective of this study was to determine if cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) improves handwriting and cyclic drawing kinematics in people with hand dystonia, by reducing cerebellar-brain inhibition (CBI) evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Eight people with dystonia (5 writer's dystonia, 3 musician's dystonia) and

Decoding basal ganglia motor circuit dysfunction from handwriting: a physics-informed neural signal interpretation framework for Parkinson's disease screening.

The decoding of latent neural states from observable signals is a key focus of modern brain-AI research. Although most neural decoding models are based on electrophysiological recordings, peripheral motor outputs also convey information about circuit-level dynamics. Handwriting is a channeled behavioral signal that indexes the health of the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loop. In Parkinson's disease (PD), dopaminergic loss disrupts this circuit, leading to tremor oscillations, micrographia, and movement irregularities. The challenge of decoding behavior-encoded neural signals from hand

Early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease using Continuous Convolution Network: Handwriting recognition based on off-line hand drawing without template.

The examination of patients' handwriting has become an important auxiliary method for the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's disease which can be used for early self-diagnosis of patients with Parkinson's disease. However, at present, the recognition of writing disorders based on artificial intelligence technology mainly relies on pattern templates and intelligent dynamic acquisition equipment, which has some design limitations. And professional acquisition equipment is not suitable for ordinary home patients. In order to facilitate the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and get more accurat

Handwriting Delay in Dyslexia: Children at the End of Primary School Still Make Numerous Short Pauses When Producing Letters.

Developmental dyslexia is defined as a specific reading disorder but is also thought to be underpinned by a deficit in motor skills that may well affect handwriting performance. However, the results of studies addressing this issue are not consistent. The present study was, therefore, designed to better understand the functioning of handwriting in children with dyslexia, by conducting an analysis of the legibility and fluency of handwritten letters, supplemented by an assessment of motor skills. The performances of 15 children with dyslexia (Mage = 11.4 years) were compared with those of two g
