Implementing a Portable, Simulation-Based Trauma Curriculum for Rural Hospitals: Planning Pilot Year.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma patients receiving care in rural settings face higher mortality rates than those at tertiary referral centers. Rural hospitals experience significant gaps in trauma care from limited access to specialists, procedural training, and standardized team-based education. In Georgia, over 20% of trauma patients come from rural areas where high-fidelity trauma training is limited. To address these disparities, we developed a trauma simulation curriculum for rural Georgia trauma providers. METHODS: A mixed-methods needs assessment was conducted to identify training needs reported

Maternal cardiac arrest: a simulation-based review of anesthetic protocols and perimortem cesarean delivery.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This review summarizes the current state of the art in maternal cardiac arrest and cesarean delivery and the rationale for and use of simulation to facilitate training in this rare but critical event. RECENT FINDINGS: Stabilization of the mother and consideration of the '4P's' and multidisciplinary management postarrest remain critical. Some key updates on management of maternal cardiac arrest include manual left uterine displacement and early/immediate preparation for resuscitative hysterotomy, with less focus on a 4-min window for intervention. Low-Cost, High-Fidelity 3D-Printed Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dislocation Reduction Task Trainer.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation is an emergency that requires prompt reduction to relieve pain and restore function. However, practicing reduction techniques can be challenging due to the limited availability of real-world cases and high-fidelity task trainers. Hands-on TMJ dislocation reduction task trainers are not readily available, highlighting the need to improve traditional education methods to provide more effective and accessible hands-on learning opportunities. To address this gap, we developed a low-cost, high-fidelity three-dimensional (3D) printed TMJ dislocation reductio

Ebola Virus Disease Simulation Case Series: Patient With Ebola Virus Disease in the Prodromal Phase of Illness (Scenario 1), the "Wet" Gastrointestinal Phase of Illness (Scenario 2), and the Late, Critically Ill Phase of Disease (Scenario 3).

INTRODUCTION: As part of an international response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, the US Department of Defense has deployed thousands of personnel to help train and augment international health care workers. The transmission risk of this deadly virus to health care workers has been extreme, demonstrating the importance of safe practices while caring for these patients. Medical simulation training is well recognized as an integral component for disease outbreak preparedness. Therefore, the US Government created a program of instruction that outlines a formalized EVD training program

Applicability of a Low-Cost, Medium-Fidelity Simulation Model to Develop Surgical Skills in Emergency Airway Management.

INTRODUCTION: Training healthcare professionals to manage a surgical airway in emergency scenarios is essential, yet the opportunity to do so is often limited. These procedures are rarely performed, and access to high-fidelity simulation tools is generally restricted due to their cost and complexity, particularly in low-resource settings. To offer a more accessible alternative, our team developed a hybrid, medium-fidelity simulation model using porcine tracheas and synthetic skin, aiming to mimic the anatomical features of the human neck. METHODS: This prospective observational study was cond

SlingVR: A Virtual Reality Surgical Training System for Haptic-based "Blind" Surgical Procedures.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: "Blind" procedures are performed without visual feedback and rely on haptics to complete the operation safely "by feel." Current training methods, including static models, cadaver sections, or supervised practice on patients, are expensive, time-consuming, and could impact patient safety. Simulation trainers that provide haptic feedback are still limited in their ability to reproduce realistic feel and accurately provide performance data. This study describes the concept, development, and usability evaluation of the SlingVR Surgical Training System for "blind" procedures. DES

Combining 3D printing and elastographic characterization: A novel sphenoid wing meningioma simulation model for neurosurgical training.

High-fidelity simulation models are crucial for advancing neurosurgical training, particularly for complex skull base pathologies such as sphenoid wing meningiomas. This study introduces and validates a novel, cost-effective 3D-printed simulator specifically designed for sphenoid wing meningioma resection. A key innovation of this model is the integration of shear wave elastography (SWE) to enable objective biomechanical validation of tumor-mimicking materials. A patient-specific skull model was created using fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing and paired with custom-molded tumor repli
