The effect of parabolic flight on perceived physical, motivational and psychological state in men and women: correlation with neuroendocrine stress parameters and electrocortical activity.

Previous findings of decreased mental and perceptual motor performance during parabolic flights have been attributed mainly to the primary effects of weightlessness rather than the accompanying effects of stress and altered mood. Although recent studies have alluded to the possible negative effects of stress on performance, there has been no attempt to investigate this during parabolic flights. Over a period of 3 years, 27 human participants (male n = 18, mean age +/- SD 34.67 +/- 7.59 years; female n = 9, 36.22 +/- 9.92 years) were recruited with the aim to evaluate if, and to what extent, pa

Neck and back muscle loading in pilots flying high G(z) sorties with and without lumbar support.

INTRODUCTION: Fighter pilots frequently encounter neck and back pain and injuries due to high G(z) loading. A lumbar support could diminish muscle strain in the lower back under G(z) loading and might also have a positive effect on cervical muscle strain, due to a more ergonomic sitting posture. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of individually adjusted lumbar supports on fighter pilots' neck and back muscle loadings. METHODS: There were 11 Finnish Air Force pilots who acted as test subjects. They flew two basic air combat maneuvering sorties with and without the LS. The EMG

Chiari-I malformation in two fighter pilots.

This report describes two cases of Chiari Malformation Type I (Chiari-I) in fighter pilots of the Turkish Air Force. Chiari-I is a congenital malformation characterized by herniation of cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum. Patients have symptoms and signs related to dysfunction of the brainstem, spinal cord, and cerebellum. They generally are symptomatic in the earlier years of life. However, asymptomatic cases can eventually become symptomatic in later years. Symptoms can be provoked by increasing intracranial pressure (Valsalva or straining). We report on two pilots with Chiari-I m

Gravitational neurobiology of fish.

In vertebrates (including man), altered gravitational environments such as weightlessness can induce malfunctions of the inner ears, based on irregular movements of the semicircular cristae or on dislocations of the inner ear otoliths from the corresponding sensory epithelia. This will lead to illusionary tilts, since the vestibular inputs are not confirmed by the other sensory organs, which results in an intersensory conflict. Vertebrates in orbit therefore face severe orientation problems. In humans, the intersensory conflict may additionally lead to a malaise, commonly referred to as space

Cervical intervertebral disc protrusion in an RAAF F-111C pilot: a case report.

This case report describes a serious cervical spine injury occurring in an F-111 pilot of the RAAF. The pilot developed a significant cervical intervertebral disc protrusion with severe, progressive neurological signs and symptoms in his right arm for a period of 4 mo. Multiple investigations including MRI and myelography established the site of the lesion as C6/7. He eventually responded to bed rest and made a complete recovery. The aeromedical disposition of this aviator and the roles of different treatment modalities in the aviation environment are discussed. The need for more research into

Physiological Responses to Four Different Baseline Accelerations on a Human Centrifuge.

INTRODUCTION: Human centrifuges use baseline acceleration levels between high-G exposures to optimize mechanical performance and minimize motion sickness. This trial assessed the cardiovascular changes associated with different centrifuge baselines to assess their impact on trials and training. METHODS: A total of 10 subjects (1 female, median age: 35, age range: 27 yr) underwent 2-min exposures to +1.2, +1.4, +1.6, and +1.8 Gz on a human centrifuge, with 5 min at +1 Gz between runs. Cardiovascular variables were assessed via the volume-clamp method and 3-lead electrocardiogram. Blood volume

Effects of altered gravity on the swimming behaviour of fish.

Humans taking part in parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) may suffer from space motion sickness-phenomena (SMS, a kinetosis). It has been argued that SMS during PAFs might not be based on microgravity alone but rather on changing accelerations from 0 g to 2 g. We test here the hypothesis that PAF-induced kinetosis is based on asymmetric statoliths (i.e., differently weighed statoliths on the right and the left side of the head), with asymmetric inputs to the brain being disclosed at microgravity. Since fish frequently reveal kinetotic behaviour during PAFs (especially so-called spinning movement

The effect of brief headward acceleration on human G tolerance.

OBJECTIVE: To generate, on a multi-axial centrifuge, a negative to positive acceleration profile that reproduces the physiological reaction and subjective symptoms experienced by agile aircraft pilots. Previous research will be summarized and current status of research described. METHODS: Experiments have been accomplished with the Dynamic Environment Simulator (DES) using different profile generating techniques. The DES was programmed with a set of open-loop profiles that provided five second duration baseline exposures ranging from +1.4 Gz down to -2 Gz followed by rapid transition to posit

Quantified EEG in different G situations.

The electrical activity of the brain (EEG) has been recorded during parabolic flights in trained astronauts and non trained volunteers as well. The Fast Fourier analysis of the EEG activity evidenced more asymmetry between the two brain hemispheres in the subjects who suffered from motion sickness than in the others. However, such a FFT classification does not lead to a discrimination between deterministic and stochastic events. Therefore, a first attempt was made to calculate the dimensionality of "chaotic attractors" in the EEG patterns as a function of the different g-epochs of one parabola

G tolerance and vascular sympathetic reflex responses as affected by repeated prolonged exposures to increased force field.

The capacity to tolerate high G loads in the head-to-seat direction (+Gz tolerance) is critical for pilots flying high-performance aircraft. The adaptive effects of repeated +Gz loading on relaxed +Gz tolerance and G-protective sympathetic reflex pressor responses were investigated. Twelve men were exposed to increased +Gz loads in a relaxed state, during 15 × 40 min sessions across 5 wk. Before and after the training regimen, relaxed +Gz tolerance was investigated during rapid onset-rate (ROR) and gradual onset-rate (GOR) G exposures, and cardiovascular responses were investigated during expo

G-factor as a tool in basic research: mechanisms of orthostatic tolerance.

The inability to tolerate upright standing posture due to development of orthostatic hypotension is a clinical problem experienced by more than 500,000 people in the United States. In addition, orthostatic intolerance is an operational problem since as many as 25 to 64 percent of the crew members from U.S. space shuttle flights have been reported to experience presyncopal incidents during postflight stand tests. Last year alone, more than 10,000 cases of unexplained syncope were reported in active duty personnel in all U.S. military services. Many clinical investigations have focused on measur

Impact of sickness induced by centrifugation on tilt perception.

INTRODUCTION: Sickness induced by centrifugation (SIC) is an analog for sensorimotor impairment and motion sickness associated with gravity transitions experienced by astronauts. The paradigm involves sustained centrifugation to create a static Gx (into the eyes) hypergravity exposure, following which vestibular-mediated functions, such as balance and eye movements, have been found to be degraded or altered. Furthermore, astronauts who were more prone to space motion sickness were also more susceptible to motion sickness following SIC. However, the vestibular and perceptual processing alterati

Erythrocyte deformability and aggregation responses to intermittent and continuous artificial gravity exposure.

Artificial gravity protocols are used to improve g-tolerance of aviators and discussed as countermeasure during prolonged space flight. Little is known about the impact of artificial gravity on the red blood cells (RBC). The purpose of the study was to test how artificial gravity affects RBC deformability and aggregation, which are important determinants of microcirculation. Nine male subjects were exposed to two hypergravity protocols using a short arm human centrifuge: a continuous (CONT) protocol with constant +2Gz for 30min and an intermittent (INTER) protocol with repeated intervals of +2

Instability of ocular torsion in zero gravity: possible implications for space motion sickness.

Inherent asymmetries of the gravity-sensitive otolith organs of the inner ear may be well-compensated in ordinary 1 G, but rendered unstable in novel gravitational states. Several aspects of ocular counterrolling and spontaneous eye torsion, reflexes governed by the otoliths, were examined during the hypo- and hypergravity in parabolic flight on the NASA KC-135 aircraft. Among the subjects were two astronauts, one who had suffered space motion sickness during his mission and one who had not. Using an observed separation of scores of torsional instability at 0 G as the criterion, we divided our

A model for vestibular function in altered gravitational states.

During evolution, the vestibular organ was made to serve mainly two purposes: 1) to guide eye movements during sharp turns, so that the point of fixation in the visual field can be kept steady, a function accomplished by the semicircular canal system and 2) to indicate the terrestrial vertical, so that upright posture and gait can be maintained even in the dark. The otolith system serves the latter purpose. Since the function of the semicircular canal system does not depend on gravity, it is not grossly disturbed by gravitational levels different from 1 g. The proper function of the otolith sy

Handheld Point-of-Care Ultrasonography for Gynecology: Insights Into Space Travel Through Parabolic Flight.

BACKGROUND: Imaging plays a critical role in evaluating gynecologic emergencies. However, access to such technology is limited in austere environments such as spaceflight. Portable point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) offers rapid diagnostic capabilities potentially useful for supporting women's health. However, the feasibility of using portable POCUS for gynecological imaging in spaceflights characterized by shifts in weightlessness has not been previously evaluated. INSTRUMENT: Transabdominal ultrasonography was undertaken to assess the feasibility of using portable POCUS for gynecologic s

Effect of vestibular stimulation using a rotatory chair in human rest/activity rhythm.

The vestibular system is responsible for sensing every angular and linear head acceleration, mainly during periods of motor activity. Previous animal and human experiments have shown biological rhythm disruptions in small rodents exposed to a hypergravity environment, but also in patients with bilateral vestibular loss compared to a control population. This raised the hypothesis of the vestibular afferent influence on circadian rhythm synchronization. The present study aimed to test the impact of vestibular stimulation induced by a rotatory chair on the rest/activity rhythm in human subjects.

Acceleration endurance with pressure breathing during G with and without a counterpressure vest.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to test whether pressure breathing during G (PBC) without a counterpressure vest negatively influences G endurance or increases breathing fatigue during extended duration high-G exposures. METHODS: While using PBG, 10 subjects underwent 2 trials of +3 Gz exposures: once when wearing a counterpressure vest and once without. The exposures consisted of a relaxed, gradual G onset run until peripheral or central light loss, a straining rapid onset GC run to +6 Gz for 15 s, and a simulated aerial combat maneuver (SACM) G profile consisting of 10-s periods

Ambient temperature and neck EMG with +Gz loading on a trampoline.

INTRODUCTION: Fighter pilots who are frequently exposed to severe cold ambient temperatures experience neck pain disabilities and occupational disorders more often than those who are not so exposed. We hypothesized that a cold-induced increase in muscle strain might lead to in-flight neck injuries. The aims of this study were to measure the level of cooling before takeoff and to determine muscle strain under Gz loading (0 to +4 Gz) at different temperatures. METHODS: Test subjects' (n = 14) skin temperature (T(skin)) over the trapezoids was measured before the walk to the aircraft and again i

Ocular torsion as a test of the asymmetry hypothesis of space motion sickness.

Disconjugate eye torsion induced by 0 G and 1.8 G during parabolic flight was studied in nine former astronauts in 1990 and eight in 1991, four of whom were included in the previous experiment. The astronauts could be divided into two statistically significant groups on the basis of low and high scores of disconjugacy. When their histories of space motion sickness (SMS) were later revealed, all of the low scorers had not been sick on previous space flights; all the high scorers had had SMS. These data give support to the hypothesis that SMS in one-half or two-thirds of astronauts is due to an
