Anopheles sinensis mosquito insecticide resistance: comparison of three mosquito sample collection and preparation methods and mosquito age in resistance measurements.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance monitoring in malaria mosquitoes is essential for guiding the rational use of insecticides in vector control programs. Resistance bioassay is the first step for insecticide monitoring and it lays an important foundation for molecular examination of resistance mechanisms. In the literature, various mosquito sample collection and preparation methods have been used, but how mosquito sample collection and preparation methods affect insecticide susceptibility bioassay results is largely unknown. The objectives of this study were to determine whether mosquito sampl

Discovery of super-insecticide-resistant dengue mosquitoes in Asia: Threats of concomitant knockdown resistance mutations.

Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) is the main mosquito vector for dengue and other arboviral infectious diseases. Control of this important vector highly relies on the use of insecticides, especially pyrethroids. The high frequency (>78%) of the L982W substitution was detected at the target site of the pyrethroid insecticide, the voltage-gated sodium channel (Vgsc) of A. aegypti collected from Vietnam and Cambodia. Alleles having concomitant mutations L982W + F1534C and V1016G + F1534C were also confirmed in both countries, and their frequency was high (>90%) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Strains havi

Sublethal effects of insecticides on the reproduction traits of insecticide-resistant Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes from Tiassalé, Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Although exposure of Anopheles mosquitoes to insecticide-treated vector control tools is not always lethal, the sublethal effects of these insecticides on their life-history traits remain poorly explored. Therefore, this study examined the impact of sublethal exposure to broflanilide, chlorfenapyr and deltamethrin on longevity; blood meal acceptance; viable egg production; and the proportion of females with viable eggs in insecticide-resistant An. gambiae s.l. populations from Tiassalé, Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS: The sublethal effects of broflanilide, chlorfenapyr and deltamethrin we

Alternative insecticides for larval control of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti in Lao PDR: insecticide resistance and semi-field trial study.

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of several arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika, and represents a major public health problem in Southeast Asia. In Laos, where dengue is reemerging, several Ae. aegypti populations from the capital Vientiane have shown resistance to the organophosphate temephos, a commonly-used larvicide for public health interventions. METHODS: Here, we tested the insecticide susceptibility of a wild larval population of Ae. aegypti against Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), diflubenzuron, pyriproxyfen and spinosad. Residual ef

Insecticide resistance in disease vectors: challenges and opportunities for effective and sustainable vector management strategies.

Achieving global health security is challenged by arthropod vectors, which transmit a wide range of vector-borne human and animal diseases. Although the safe, selective, and responsible use of insecticides continues to play a crucial role in vector management, their long-term effectiveness is increasingly threatened by the widespread emergence of insecticide resistance. Resistance evolves through natural selection acting on pre-existing genetic heritable variation in vector populations under insecticide selective pressure. In addition, exposure to insecticides induces genetic/metabolic changes

Insecticide resistance in mosquitoes: Current status, mechanism, monitoring and innovative strategies for sustainable vector control.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever remain major public health challenges worldwide, causing millions of cases and thousands of deaths annually. Vector control has been the cornerstone of prevention strategies, with insecticides being the most commonly used intervention. However, the widespread and often indiscriminate use of insecticides has led to the emergence of insecticide resistance in the mosquito population, thereby threatening the sustainability of existing control measures. This review presents the current status of insecticide resistan

Unraveling Key Amino Acid Residues Crucial for PxGSTs1 Conferring Benzoylurea Insecticide Resistance in Plutella xylostella.

The widespread use of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) has led to significant resistance issues in various agricultural pests. Previous studies have demonstrated that the overexpression of sigma glutathione S-transferase 1 (PxGSTs1) can confer resistance to novaluron in Plutella xylostella; however, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. This study investigates the role of glutathione S-transferase PxGSTs1 in mediating resistance to BUs in P. xylostella. Using a combination of RNA interference and transgenic Drosophila models, we demonstrated that the overexpression of PxGSTs1 signi

International workshop on insecticide resistance in vectors of arboviruses, December 2016, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Vector-borne diseases transmitted by insect vectors such as mosquitoes occur in over 100 countries and affect almost half of the world's population. Dengue is currently the most prevalent arboviral disease but chikungunya, Zika and yellow fever show increasing prevalence and severity. Vector control, mainly by the use of insecticides, play a key role in disease prevention but the use of the same chemicals for more than 40 years, together with the dissemination of mosquitoes by trade and environmental changes, resulted in the global spread of insecticide resistance. In this context, innovative

Deep sequencing of New World screw-worm transcripts to discover genes involved in insecticide resistance.

BACKGROUND: The New World screw-worm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax, is one of the most important myiasis-causing flies, causing severe losses to the livestock industry. In its current geographical distribution, this species has been controlled by the application of insecticides, mainly organophosphate (OP) compounds, but a number of lineages have been identified that are resistant to such chemicals. Despite its economic importance, only limited genetic information is available for the NWS. Here, as a part of an effort to characterize the C. hominivorax genome and identify putative genes invol

Aldehyde oxidase is coamplified with the World's most common Culex mosquito insecticide resistance-associated esterases.

The evolution and spread of insecticide resistance is an important factor in human disease prevention and crop protection. The mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus is the main vector of the disease filariasis and a member of a species complex which is a common biting nuisance worldwide. The common insecticide resistance mechanism in this species involves germline amplification of the esterases estalpha21 and estbeta21. This amplification has arisen once and rapidly spread worldwide. Less common and more variable resistance phenotypes involve coamplification of estalpha3 and estbeta1, or individual

Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis of Insecticide-Resistant Aedes aegypti from Puerto Rico Reveals Insecticide-Specific Patterns of Gene Expression.

Aedes aegypti transmits major arboviruses of public health importance, including dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. The use of insecticides represents the cornerstone of vector control; however, insecticide resistance in Ae. aegypti has become widespread. Understanding the molecular basis of insecticide resistance in this species is crucial to design effective resistance management strategies. Here, we applied Illumina RNA-Seq to study the gene expression patterns associated with resistance to three widely used insecticides (malathion, alphacypermethrin, and lambda-cyhalothrin) in Ae
