[Radiation-induced intestinal injury].

This article addresses theoretical and clinical aspects of radiation-induced intestinal injuries, which complicate radiation therapy for malignant neoplasms of the abdominal and pelvic organs. Many clinical aspects of this issue remain unknown due to the lack of awareness among doctors and patients. Further study of radiation-induced intestinal injuries and the development of personalized approaches to their prevention and treatment represent a relevant direction in internal medicine.

[A rare case of bone metastasis from gastro-intestinal stromal tumour: place of radiotherapy].

Gastro-intestinal stromal tumours are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. Their usual metastatic sites are the liver and the peritoneum, but gastro-intestinal stromal tumours rarely metastasize to the bones. We report the case of a 56-year-old male presenting with bone lesions six years after initial surgical resection. We discuss through this paper the possibilities of management of these lesions and the place of radiotherapy.

Combination of adult intussusception and intestinal malrotation: an unusual presentation.

Intussusception is familiar to pediatric surgeons but is rarely encountered by general surgeons. Adult intussusception is uncommon, accounting for less than 5% of intestinal obstructions, half of which are associated neoplasms. Intestinal malrotation is usually an incidental finding with unrelated disease on image studies, laparotomy or even autopsy. The major complications of intestinal malrotation are intestinal obstruction secondary to midgut volvulus, internal hernia, or adhesion band. The association of the two entities, which is named Waugh's syndrome in infants, has rarely been reported

Retrospective histopathological analysis of various neoplasms of different parts of the gastrointestinal tract seen at the Kathmandu University Teaching Hospital (KUTH), Dhulikhel, Nepal.

OBJECTIVE: To find out the spectrum of various histopathologic types of primary neoplasms of different parts of the gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colorectum, anal canal) seen at the Kathmandu University Teaching Hospital (KUTH), Dhulikhel as there exists a worldwide wide variation in the distribution of various neoplasms of different parts of the gastrointestinal tract, which appears largely due to exogenous factors rather than due to inherent differences between populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study. It was carried out at Kathmandu

Ileal Intussusception in an Adult Caused by a Locally Invasive Inflammatory Fibroid Polyp: A Case Report.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps (IFPs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms affecting the gastrointestinal tract which are considered benign and noninvasive. We present a case of an invasive IFP in a 46-year-old woman who presented with signs of intestinal obstruction due to ileal intussusception. A segment of the small intestine was resected and subsequently intestinal continuity was restored. A polypoid lesion was found obstructing the lumen. Histopathology revealed a mesenchymal proliferation of spindle and stellate cells, without cytological atypia, arranged in a fibromyxoid stroma. The tumor cells

Extranodal T- and NK-cell lymphomas.

Non-cutaneous extranodal NK/T cell lymphoproliferations constitute a heterogenous group of rare neoplasms, occurring primarily in the gastro-intestinal tract, nasal area, spleen, and liver. Their nomenclature refers to their usual clinical presentation and predilection for specific anatomic sites-i.e. extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal-type, hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, primary intestinal T-cell lymphomas, indolent lymphoproliferative disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, and breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Extranodal tissues may also be involved by T-cell leuk

Acute GI bleed due to leiomyoma of the jejunum: a case report.

Neoplasms of the small intestine are rare. Leiomyomas are the one of the benign neoplasms that can be found in the small intestine. These lesions usually remain asymptomatic and are often found incidentally; however, they can become symptomatic if obstruction occurs or the tumor outgrows its blood supply resulting mucosa. Their clinical manifestations can include abdominal pain, diarrhea, melena, a palpable abdominal mass and weight loss. Due to their vague presentation, leiomyomas of the small intestine are typically diagnosed after failed conservative therapy for other pathologies such as du

Appendiceal carcinoids in Crohn's disease.

Earlier investigations demonstrate an increased risk for colon cancer in Crohn's disease. For other intestinal neoplasms, such as carcinoids, studies are limited. In Crohn's disease, repeated endoscopic and imaging studies along with intestinal resections may facilitate clinical recognition of neoplastic diseases, including appendiceal neoplasms. To date, however, only sporadic cases of appendiceal carcinoids have been described in Crohn's disease. In the present study, in a single clinician database of 1000 Crohn's disease patients, three of the 441 patients who had undergone intestinal resec

Metachronous extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma unspecified: histologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular documentation.

BACKGROUND: Coexistence of B- and T-cell lymphoid malignancies has been reported sporadically. CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old woman developed a lymphoid neoplasm in the large intestine and a second lymphoid neoplasm in the esophagus, 24 months after the diagnosis of the first lymphoma. Immunophenotypic analyses were consistent with extranodal marginal zone B-cell mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type (MALT type) and peripheral T-cell unspecified lymphomas in the large intestine and the esophagus, respectively. The molecular analysis confirmed the B-clonal genotype of the first lymphoma, and disc

Myxoma of the small intestine complicated by ileo-ileal intussusception: Report of an extremely rare case.

INTRODUCTION: Myxomas of the small intestine are extremely rare types of primary bowel neoplasms. Their presence can trigger intestinal intussusception in the adults. We present the eighth case of intestinal myxoma reported in the English literature. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Our patient is a 44-year-old Caucasian female who presented with clinical and imaging findings of intestinal intussusception. Laparotomy revealed ileo-ileal intussusception caused by an intramural mass of the middle-ileum which was resected. Histological and immunohistochemical studies pointed to the diagnosis of benign inte

Appendiceal perforation secondary to endometriosis with intestinal metaplasia: A case report.

Appendiceal endometriosis with intestinal metaplasia is particularly challenging to diagnose preoperatively based on clinical features. Microscopically, it can mimic malignant transformation into mucinous neoplasms of the appendix. The present study reports a case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain that was not related to her menstruation. The preoperative diagnosis and laparoscopic evaluation were chronic appendicitis. No mucinous or haemorrhagic secretions were present within the abdominal cavity. Pathological evaluation revealed conventional endometriosis with intestin

Primary melanoma of small intestine masquerading as gastrointestinal stromal tumor: a case report and literature review.

Malignant melanoma of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare entity among intestinal neoplasms. Primary intestinal melanoma is difficult to differentiate from metastatic melanoma, especially given that the primary cutaneous lesion has the potential to regress and disappear. In addition, melanoma by itself is a great mimicker of other neoplastic conditions and may create a major diagnostic challenge when presenting at an intra-abdominal location. Here we report a case of small intestinal melanoma in a 74-year-old female who presented with symptoms of intestinal bleeding and a preoperative clinica

Intestinal autotransplantation.

Most abdominal neoplasms involving the root of the superior mesenteric artery and/or celiac artery are difficult to manage with conventional operative techniques because of limited intestinal ischemia times and poor accessibility to the tumor region. Ex vivo surgery followed by intestinal autotransplantation (IATx) is a relatively novel surgical strategy to offer chances for complete resection in such hopeless circumstances. This review aims to assess potential surgical indications, operative techniques and clinical outcomes after IATx. Currently the main indications reported for IATx broadly

Claudin-18 is an early-stage marker of pancreatic carcinogenesis.

Pancreatic ductal neoplasms exhibit gastric epithelium-like characteristics. In this study, we evaluated the expression of claudin-18 (CLDN18), a gastric epithelium-associated claudin, in pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias (PanINs), intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs), mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs), and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs) using immunohistochemistry. We observed a high level of expression of CLDN18 in PanINs (31/32, 97%), IPMNs (61/65, 95%), and MCNs (4/5, 80%) using ordinary tissue section analysis. Furthermore, we observed a high level of CLDN18 expre

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor of small intestine and synchronous bilateral papillary renal cell carcinoma.

Association of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) with other primary malignant neoplasms has previously been reported. In addition, coexistence of unilateral renal cell cancer and a GIST of the stomach has been documented in the literature. We report herein a unique case of a GIST of the small intestine and bilateral papillary renal cell carcinomas in a patient presenting with melena and dizziness. Literature shows that GIST arising from the small intestine is the most common location of GIST accompanied by a second primary neoplasm. However, a unique feature in our GIST patient is the pr

Pseudocapillaria tomentosa, a nematode pathogen, and associated neoplasms of zebrafish (Danio rerio) kept in research colonies.

Infections with capillarid nematodes were observed in zebrafish (Danio rerio) kept at several research facilities and in a large carcinogen exposure study previously conducted at Oregon State University. We report a morphologic description that identifies the worm as Pseudocapillaria tomentosa, a common nematode of cyprinid and other fishes. Pathologic lesions associated with the infection ranged from inflammatory changes to aggressive neoplasms of the intestine (i.e., intestinal carcinomas and mixed malignant neoplasms). Capillarid nematodes may have intermediate or paratenic hosts. Using a l

Pediatric ileoileal intussusception with a lipoma lead point: a case report.

Intussusception is a common cause of mechanical bowel obstruction among children, with older children being more likely to have a pathological lead point. Intestinal neoplasms are rare and small intestinal lipomas are even less common. Herein we describe a case of a 7-year-old boy with ileoileal intussusception, with an ileal lipoma as the pathological lead point. Computed tomography was useful pre-operatively for revealing intussusception due to lipoma as the pathologic lead point.
