Familial gastrointestinal polyposis constitutes a multiplication of the principle varieties of common polyps, not only in the colon but also in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. These are hereditary and familial diseases with autosomal dominant transmission. The genetic defect can also be responsible for associated extra-gastrointestinal lesions. The classification of these familial polyposes is based on the histological features of the polyps. The adenomatous polyposes consist of familial recto-colonic polyposis (FRCP), which is the most frequent form, and Gardner's syndrome. This va

A variation of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), known as Gardner's syndrome (GS), can manifest as extraintestinal tumors, such as desmoid tumors (DTs). A key part in the diagnosing process is played by the clinician. Because DT frequently occurs before intestinal polyposis develops, doctors can identify the underlying illness early by looking for DT's telltale signs. Nevertheless, in this instance, the patient's failure to recognize the illness promptly following the excision of the tumor in the abdomen wall caused a delay in the diagnosis and impacted the disease's course.

Gardner's syndrome is characterised by polyposis coli associated with multiple hard and soft tissue tumours including osteoma and odontoma. The major significance of the condition lies in the gastrointestinal polyposis which usually undergoes malignant change by the fourth decade. Extra-intestinal components may be apparent before those in the bowel, and their early detection may lead to appropriate evaluation and life saving treatment. A case is reported to demonstrate how important it is for general dental practitioners to be aware of the clinical and radiological characteristics of Gardner'

Colon polyps are a common finding in pediatrics and can present with rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, or polyp prolapse from the rectum. Histologically classified as hamartomas, these isolated pediatric polyps lack epithelial dysplasia and have no cancer risk. However, when polyps are present in greater numbers, or are associated with a family history of polyps or colon or other cancers, a polyposis or hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome should be considered. Using a case-based format, this article reviews the clinical features and provides updates on the three most common hamartomatous poly

Colorectal serrated polyps are now recognized as an important pathway in colorectal carcinogenesis. An association between serrated polyposis syndrome (SPS) and duodenal serrated lesions sharing a similar immunophenotype in both the colon and duodenum has been reported in the literature. We present a case of a 38-year-old male who presented in June 2023 with abdominal pain and fever. Initial investigations, including multiple computed tomography scans of the abdomen and pelvis, revealed an appendiceal abscess and small bowel intussusception involving two segments of the jejunum without evidenc

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is characterized by intestinal hamartomatous polyposis (usually affecting the jejunum) and mucocutaneous melanin spots. Though malignant changes are not common, PJS can predispose to carcinoma in the GI tract and elsewhere. We report a 25-year-old man with PJS who developed small intestinal adenocarcinoma and presented with small bowel obstruction due to jejuno-ileal intussusception.

Juvenile polyposis syndrome (JPS) is a rare disease with an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern characterized by the development of multiple hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract. The most frequent signs and symptoms are recurrent abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, anemia, and iron deficiency. The treatment of JPS is symptomatic, requiring serial endoscopic polypectomies or intestinal resections in the most severe cases. We describe the clinical case of a patient with JPS with a childhood juvenile polyposis phenotype because of a mutation on the SMAD4 gene, who received treatment

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by the development of colorectal adenomas which may be caused by mutations of the Adenomatosis polyposis colon gene. Patients with FAP are at risk for several additional intestinal malignancies including well-differentiated thyroid cancer, childhood hepatoblastoma, and central nervous system tumors. Cribriform-morular variant (CMV) is a rare subtype of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) that is associated with FAP, and is also seen in patients without FAP. Patients could present with PTC before they show signs

Colon cancer in humans is influenced by both genetic and dietary risk factors. The majority of colon cancers have somatic mutations in the APC (adenomatous polyposis coli) tumour-suppressor gene. Dietary arginine enhances the risk of APC-dependent colon carcinogenesis in mouse models by a mechanism involving NOS2 (nitric oxide synthase 2), as elimination of NOS2 alleles suppresses this phenotype. DFMO (difluoromethylornithine), a specific inhibitor of polyamine synthesis, also inhibits dietary arginine-induced colon carcinogenesis in C57BL/6J-Apc(Min)/J mice. The primary consequence of dietary

Therapeutic strategies that promote read-through of a mutant gene have proved effective for certain non-neoplastic diseases. However, the efficacy of this approach is unproven regarding neoplastic diseases with germline nonsense mutations, including familial adenomatous polyposis. Here we examined the cancer-preventive efficacy of the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin, with a reported read-through effect, on intestinal tumorigenesis in C3B6F1 ApcMin/+ mice harboring a nonsense Apc mutation resulting in a truncated Apc protein. Mice were given drinking water lacking azithromycin or containing 0

CASE HISTORY: A 66-year-old woman suffering from skin paleness and weakness presented an increasing hypochromic, microcytic anemia. Diagnostic: In an ambulant setting a capsule endoscopy of the small intestine was carried out because of multiple polyps of the colon (colonoscopy) in addition to non-invasive (Hämoccult-Test) and invasive (gastroscopy) diagnostic. The patient was then admitted to hospital to clarify a suspicious ulcer of the small bowl. According to biopsies taken via balloon enteroscopy, an adenocarcinoma of the small intestine was diagnosed.

Juvenile polyposis located solely on prolapsed rectal mucosa is very unusual. We report the case of a 17-year old boy who presented to us with a history of passage of blood and mucus per rectum of a mass protruding through the anus during defecation. Per rectal and colonoscopic examinations revealed numerous polyps located solely on the prolapsed rectal mucosa. Histopathology was consistent with juvenile polyposis. He was managed with repeated sessions of endoscopic polypectomy. Family screening was negative for colonic polyps.

RATIONALE: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a nonhereditary, rare polyposis condition, first documented by Cronkhite and Canada in 1955. The primary distinct features of this syndrome include ectodermal abnormalities and diffuse gastrointestinal polyp changes accompanied by protein loss. The primary clinical manifestations of CCS include hair loss, excessive pigmentation of the skin, and malnourishment of fingernails or toenails. Other notable symptoms include weight loss, protein-losing enteropathy, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, taste abnormalities, and atrophic glossitis, whi

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a non-inherited, sporadic disorder characterized by generalized gastrointestinal polyps (hamartomas), cutaneous pigmentation, alopecia and onychodystrophy. More than 500 CCS patients have been reported, mostly from Asian countries. Patients with CCS have a propensity to develop colonic traditional serrated adenomas (TSA). Some authors found increased frequency of colonic carcinomas in CCS patients. In the present communication, we report a patient with CCS in whom a colonoscopic examination failed to disclose a coexistent TSA.

Between January 1982 and March 1990, 106 patients underwent restorative proctocolectomy in eight separate surgical departments. The indication for operation was ulcerative colitis in 86%, familial adenomatous polyposis in 12% and megacolon in 2%. The age at operation was 33 +/- 2 years (mean +/- sem) (range 15-55 years). There were no perioperative deaths. The principal causes of post-operative morbidity were intra-abdominal sepsis (15%), anastomotic stricture (10%) and intestinal obstruction (8%). Intestinal continuity has been restored in 99 patients. All were grossly continent, but 32% expe

Video capsule endoscopy is a safe and noninvasive, well-endurable method of the direct visual inspection of the whole of the small intestine. The most frequent indications for video capsule endoscopy are the diagnostics of latent gastro-intestinal bleedings, angiodysplasias, Crohn disease, celiac disease, syndromes of hereditary polyposis and tumors of the small intestine. The authors describe the first experience of using this new method in the domestic clinical practice. Data concerning the diagnostics of lesions of the small intestine by the method of video capsule endoscopy as well as the
