BACKGROUND: Conjunctival mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma has been well-described, but rarely do these lesions demonstrate intraocular involvement. We report a case of conjunctival MALT lymphoma with intraocular involvement and novel spectral-domain ocular coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 75-year-old woman with biopsy-proven MALT lymphoma of the conjunctiva presented with ipsilateral yellowish diffuse choroidal infiltrates on fundoscopic examination. Choroidal involvement was documented clinically, on ultrasonography, on fluorescein angiography,

PURPOSE: The patterns of uveitis in Tokyo have recently changed due to advances in examination tools. We aimed to investigate the changes in the patterns of uveitis between 2004-2015 and 2016-2018.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 732 patients who visited the Uveitis Clinic at the University of Tokyo Hospital between January 2016 and December 2018. Background characteristics, laboratory results, and imaging findings were analysed. We compared the incidences of uveitis in 2016-2018 and 2004-2015 to identify changes in the patterns.
RESULTS: The most frequent diagnoses were sar

BACKGROUND: Currently, transvitreal fine-needle aspiration biopsy is the most widely used tissue biopsy technique in cases of suspected intraocular lymphoma due to its relative simplicity and low trauma. The small sample produced, however, may be inadequate for diagnostic and prognostic analyses due to mechanical artefacts, insufficient material, or sampling errors. Small case series have demonstrated choroidal biopsy via vitrectomy to be safe and effective. With smaller-gauge vitrectomy instruments, visual recovery is rapid, and post-operative inflammation and conjunctival scarring is minimis

The case of an 82-year-old man who developed intraocular extension from mycosis fungoides, a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, is presented. The patient died soon after intraocular involvement occurred. Immunohistochemistry of a skin biopsy, taken early in the course of the disease, disclosed a predominance of T cells with a helper/inducer phenotype (CD4(+)). However, an intraocular infiltrate obtained 7 years later contained mostly T cells with a suppressor/cytotoxic phenotype (CD8(+)). The occurrence of ocular invasion, the change in immunophenotype, and the predominant proliferation of CD8(+) lymp

PURPOSE: We report a case of intraocular involvement in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma masquerading as Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.
METHODS: A 48-year-old woman presented with blurred vision in both eyes, fever, and hearing disturbance and underwent a complete ophthalmologic and systemic evaluation.
RESULTS: Ophthalmologic examination showed bilateral exudative retinal detachment and signs of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease. However, considering her generalized symptoms, systemic evaluation was performed before administering systemic steroid pulse therapy. In a systemic investigation, the patie

Intraocular lymphoma (IOL) comprises a group of malignant tumours originating from lymphohematopoietic tissues that have a poor prognosis. These tumours predominantly occur in the vitreous and retina but are rarely found in the choroid. A few case reports and case series of choroidal lymphoma (CL) have been reported in the literature. CL is prone to misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment because it often mimics other intraocular diseases such as uveitis. This may seriously affect localisation of the primary lesion and delay treatment, which may even affect the patient's survival. Herein, we repo

PURPOSE: To describe a case of orbital mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma masquerading as unilateral panuveitis.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review.
RESULTS: A 53-year-old female patient with unilateral vitritis and exudative retinal detachment refractory to immunosuppressive treatment was eventually diagnosed with orbital MALT lymphoma. Following treatment with radiotherapy and rituximab, the patient's intraocular inflammation and retinal detachment resolved.
CONCLUSIONS: Orbital MALT lymphoma can masquerade as refractory unilateral panuveitis with exudative retinal detachm

We are reporting primary ocular lymphoma in two male patients who are sixty seven and seventy years old. The first case was admitted to the hospital after an ophthalmologic examination that revealed a soft, pink homogenous vascular mass originating from the conjunctiva, and extending behind the bulbous oculi, completely covering the upper quadrant of the right eye. There was also right axial exophthalmy. Ocular adnexal and intraocular involvement was seen at physical examination and orbital imaging. Optic atrophy and retinal pigment epitheloid changes were seen at fundoscopic examination. Biop

Intraocular non-Hodgkin lymphoma often masquerades a chronic uveitis, which does however not respond to local and/or systemic immunosuppressive treatment. The anterior segment signs are usually discrete, although a hypopion may appear during evolution. The vitreous is often markedly involved. The chorioretinal lesions are variable in aspect. Subretinal infiltrates or solid retinal pigment epithelial detachments are the most characteristic fundus signs of the disease. Other fundus signs may be present, such as retinal vascular occlusions, perivasculitis, macular oedema, optic disc oedema or isc

BACKGROUND/AIM: Lymphomas of the orbit and orbital adnexa are important concerns in ophthalmologic practice; however, due to their nonspecific signs and symptoms, establishing a definitive diagnosis is often challenging. This study aimed to further expand understanding of these entities by assessing the histopathological subtypes and characteristic features of orbital lymphomas in a population undergoing orbital surgery at the Department of Ophthalmology in Katowice.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2011 and 2017, a total of 107 orbital surgeries were performed for various orbital tumors. Tissue

A 6-year-old thoroughbred gelding was presented with a history of blepharospasm and opacity in the OS of 1 weeks' duration. Ophthalmic examination findings were consistent with acute uveitis in the OS, and traditional treatment was initiated with systemic antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, topical mydriatics, and corticosteroids. During the total treatment period of 4 weeks response to treatment was weak and the horse developed further problems such as cellulitis of the right hind limb with fever and eventually weight loss and dependent edema. Blood work was indicative of liver disease.

Intravitreal methotrexate (MTX) has been proven to be an effective treatment for various intraocular diseases. In this article, a comprehensive review was performed on intravitreal applications of methotrexate. Different aspects of the administration of intravitreal MTX for various clinical conditions such as intraocular tumors, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and uveitis were reviewed and the adverse effects of intravitreal injection of MTX were discussed. The most common indications are intraocular lymphoma and uveitis. Other applicati

The authors systematically analyze a series of 38 patients having a total of 40 vitreous fluid cytology determinations. Nine of the 38 patients (23.7%) have cytologic results diagnostic for, or at least highly suggestive of, a specific disease process. These include two cases of bacterial endophthalmitis; two cases of fungal endophthalmitis; one case of vitreal amyloidosis; and four cases called positive for intraocular lymphoma. There are no vitreous fluid cytology determinations falsely positive or falsely negative for malignancy in this series. Intraocular lymphoma and the increasingly impo

Primary vitreoretinal lymphoma (PVRL) is the most common intraocular lymphoma occurring in the eye. It is a high-grade typically B-cell malignancy, arising in the retina, and is often associated with central nervous system (CNS) disease and thereby a poor prognosis. It needs to be distinguished from choroidal low-grade B-cell lymphomas, which do not disseminate to the brain and have a good prognosis. Because of the rarity of PVRL, information is lacking regarding its true incidence, its geographical or ethnic variation, and underlying risk factors apart from immunosuppression associated with h

We report a very unusual presentation of primary intraocular lymphoma masquerading as anterior uveitis with atypical symptoms. A 68-year-old man, initially presented with a 4-day history of painless, left blurred vision. Examination revealed 2 or more anterior chamber cells, mutton-fat keratic precipitates and posterior synechiae. Treatment was initiated, the eye settled, and the patient was discharged. He re-presented 7 months later with hypopyon, a hazy cornea, fibrin deposits and a narrowed anterior chamber angle. Over the coming weeks, it became apparent that the temporal iris was thickene

PURPOSE: A patient with choroidal lymphoma associated with a choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM) is described.
METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 70-year-old man was referred for evaluation of bilateral uveitis with concern for intraocular lymphoma. Fundoscopic examination was notable for vitreous opacities and diffuse yellow-white, creamy choroidal infiltrates in both eyes. In the left eye, areas of hemorrhage and intraretinal fluid in the macula consistent with a CNVM were noted. Multimodal imaging confirmed the diagnosis of bilateral choroidal lymphoma with a CNVM in the lef

PURPOSE: The distribution of uveitis varies worldwide and changes over time. Although nationwide surveys in Japan report shifts in disease patterns, updated epidemiological data after 2020 remain limited. In this study, we investigated the current pattern of uveitis among first-time patients at a regional university hospital in Japan and compared the findings with previous nationwide surveys.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational study.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with uveitis who first visited Saitama Medical Center, Jichi Medical University, bet
