Review of intervention methods for language and communication disorders in children with autism spectrum disorders.

In recent years, the number of patients-particularly children-with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been continually increasing. ASD affects a child's language communication and social interaction to a certain extent and has an impact on behavior, intelligence level, and other aspects of the child. Data indicates that 40% to 70% of children with ASD experience language developmental delays, which are mainly manifested as lack of language or language developmental delay, self-talk, use of stereotyped language, parroting, et cetera. A language communication disorder is a major symptom of ASD a

Use and Perceived Effectiveness of Communication Modes Reported by Persons With Primary Progressive Aphasia.

PURPOSE: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a clinical neurodegenerative dementia syndrome characterized by early, selective, and progressive language impairment. PPA onset is gradual, providing time to potentially identify additional or alternative expressive communication modes; however, reports of communication mode use and effectiveness by persons with PPA have not been described. This study characterized the use, frequency, and perceived effectiveness of communication modes reported by individuals with PPA. METHOD: Forty-one participants with mild-to-moderate PPA completed a structured

The nature and causes of children's grammatical difficulties: Evidence from an intervention to improve past tense marking in children with Down syndrome.

Children with language learning difficulties frequently display problems learning grammar. One such group is children with Down syndrome. This study evaluates the effectiveness of an intervention to teach the use of the regular simple past tense to children with Down syndrome. Trained teaching assistants delivered the intervention for 20 min per day for 10 weeks. We conducted a Randomised Controlled Trial, with a waiting list control design in which the Intervention group (N = 26) received the intervention immediately, while the delayed intervention group (N = 26) received the intervention lat

A comparison of formal and informal methods for assessing language and cognition in children with Rett syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Opinions about the cognitive and receptive language skills of people with Rett syndrome (RTT) range from severe intellectual impairment to near-normal development. Assessment is challenging because most are non-verbal, with no purposeful hand use. Clarkson et al. (2017) adapted the Mullen Scales of Early Learning for use with eye gaze technology (MSEL-A/ET) for people with RTT. AIMS: To investigate and compare the performance of children with RTT on formal and newly-designed informal assessments of language and cognition using eye gaze/tracking technology. METHODS AND PROCEDURES:

Five overarching factors central to grammatical learning and treatment in children with developmental language disorder.

BACKGROUND: During grammatical treatment of children with developmental language disorder (DLD), it is natural for therapists to focus on the grammatical details of the target language that give the children special difficulty. However, along with the language-specific features of the target (e.g., for English, add -s to verbs in present tense, third-person singular contexts), there are overarching factors that operate to render the children's learning task more, or less, challenging, depending on the particular target. AIMS: To identify five such factors that can play a role in the grammatic

Re-Evaluating the Role of Statistical Learning: Domain-General Predictors of Language in Typical and Atypical Development.

The ability to detect statistical regularities in the input is widely assumed to support language acquisition, but its unique contribution to individual differences in language outcomes remains uncertain, especially in neurodevelopmental conditions. This study tested whether statistical learning predicts expressive vocabulary and grammatical skills in children with typical development and in groups with developmental language disorder, autism spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A total of 102 Hungarian-speaking children aged 8 to 15 years completed tasks assessing st

Developmental Outcomes in Early-Identified Children Who Are Hard of Hearing at 2 to 3 Years of Age.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the psychosocial, adaptive behavior, and language outcomes of young children who are hard of hearing (HH) without additional disabilities or neurocognitive impairments. Relations between early developmental outcomes and child and parent demographic variables, and parenting stress and self-efficacy were also explored. DESIGN: Participants were 39 children with early identified, permanent mild to severe hearing loss, between the ages of 2 and 3 years, and a comparison group of 47 children with normal hearing (NH). Developmental outcomes were measured using clinic

Unpacking the Black Box: A Systematic Search and Narrative Review of Components in Pediatric Speech and Language Therapy Sessions.

BACKGROUND: There is limited empirical data describing components of pediatric speech-language therapy sessions across the range of practice areas. In many cases, intervention sessions function as a "black box" with internal workings insufficiently documented or understood. This systematic search and review investigates how pediatric speech-language pathology intervention sessions are described and measured. METHOD: A systematic search and review were conducted based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Five databases were searched for peer-rev

Lexical Acquisition and Phonological Development in Minimally Verbal Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders.

PURPOSE: This study examines two components of lexical acquisition and phonological development that occur during the first 50-word stage of language development in neurotypical (NT) children. One component is how children learn words based on their existing speech sound inventories (i.e., in-phonology and out-of-phonology word learning). The other component is the relationship between the children's number of words and the number of phonemes in their speech sound inventories. The goal of this study is to determine if the same two components occur in children with autism spectrum disorders (AS

Autism, Asperger's syndrome and semantic-pragmatic disorder: where are the boundaries?

The diagnostic criteria for autism have been refined and made more objective since Kanner first described the syndrome, so there is now reasonable consistency in how this diagnosis is applied. However, many children do not meet these criteria, yet show some of the features of autism. Where language development is impaired, such children tend to be classed as cases of developmental dysphasia (or specific language impairment) whereas those who learn to talk at the normal age may be diagnosed as having Asperger's syndrome. It is argued that rather than thinking in terms of rigid diagnostic catego

[Early indicators of childhood apraxia of speech in late talkers: general guidelines to intervention].

INTRODUCTION: The population of children with slow emergence of language development varies widely, both in their initial profile and in their response to intervention. In this sense, there is a group of late talkers who continue to show persistent language difficulties, in some cases exhibiting signs compatible with verbal dyspraxia. METHOD: In this paper we present the different response to intervention of two profiles of late talkers. Specifically, the Target Word© program (Hanen Centre) was implemented, which is addressed to latetalking children and their families. It combines the techniq

Phonological Working Memory and Sentence Production in School-Age Children with Typical Language, Dyslexia, and Comorbid Dyslexia and Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Little is known about the relationship between sentence production and phonological working memory in school-age children. To fill this gap, we examined how strongly these constructs correlate. We also compared diagnostic groups' working memory abilities to see if differences co-occurred with qualitative differences in their sentences. METHOD: We conducted Bayesian analyses on data from seven- to nine-year-old children (n = 165 typical language, n = 81 dyslexia-only, n = 43 comorbid dyslexia and developmental language disorder). We correlated sentence production and working memory sc

Statistical learning as a window into developmental disabilities.

Until recently, most behavioral studies of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have used standardized assessments as a means to probe etiology and to characterize phenotypes. Over the past decade, however, tasks originally developed to investigate learning processes in typical development have been brought to bear on developmental processes in children with IDD.This brief review will focus on one learning process in particular-statistical learning-and will provide an overview of what has been learned thus far from studies using statistical learning tasks with differ

[Development of speech disorders in children].

The function of the formation of speech skills is decisive in the development of a child in communication and assimilation of information. Early pediatric diagnosis should become a routine practice of monitoring children from infancy to school age for the timely correction of speech disorders and associated dysgraphia and dyslexia. According to the ICD-10 classification, speech developmental disorders are divided into the following options: articulation impairment, delay in expressive and impressive speech. Articulation disorders, stuttering, impaired expressive speech are the most common and

Four new speech and prosody-voice measures for genetics research and other studies in developmental phonological disorders.

Research in developmental phonological disorders, particularly emerging subgroup studies using behavioral and molecular genetics, requires qualitative and continuous measurement systems that meet a variety of substantive and psychometric assumptions. This paper reviews relevant issues underlying such needs and presents four measurement proposals developed expressly for causal-correlates research. The primary qualitative system is the Speech Disorders Classification System (SDCS), a 10-category nosology for dichotomous and hierarchical polychotomous classification of speech disorders from 2 yea

A meta-analysis of the relationship between speech and language development in children with nonsyndromic cleft palate with or without cleft lip.

OBJECTIVE: Children with nonsyndromic cleft palate with or without cleft lip are at risk of speech production and language delays. In typical development, a strong relationship exists between speech and expressive language development. However, the understanding of this relationship in children with nonsyndromic cleft palate with or without cleft lip is incomplete. The objective of this study was to determine the average correlation between consonant inventory and two expressive language skills in children with NSCP ± L. DESIGN: The study used a random effects meta-analyses design. Articles w
