Cutaneous leishmaniasis presents a spectrum of manifestations both clinically and histologically. Several previous studies have established the value of histological examination in the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Different reaction patterns have been reported. Forty cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis were studied in the Sultanate of Oman, with particular reference to the different histological features. Clinical features were correlated with the histological patterns. Four histological patterns were identified-1) diffuse macrophage infiltration without necrosis, 2) macrophage infiltrat

Sera from diverse clinical forms of American cutaneous leishmaniasis show remarkably different patterns of reactivity to Leishmania mexicana and L. braziliensis after absorption with these two species of Leishmania. The enhanced species specificity of absorbed sera was confirmed by reactions with well characterized reference strains. The use of pairs of enriched polyclonal sera from mucocutaneous and diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis permits the preliminary classification of isolates in the L. mexicana or L. braziliensis complexes by a simple, inexpensive, and quantitative immunoassay.

Tegumentary leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease globally distributed, considered one of the main neglected tropical diseases and strongly associated with poverty. It is endemic in the Americas, Asia, and Africa, and its transmission is linked to forest and wildlife areas. Cutaneous leishmaniasis include atypical forms such as disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis (DL), an entity first described in Brazil in 1920, which has evidenced an increase in incidence over the past 20 years. The Plurinational State of Bolivia, one of the countries in the Americas with the highest number of reported cases

BACKGROUND: Co-infection of leishmaniasis and HIV is increasingly reported. The clinical presentation of leishmaniasis is determined by the host immune response to the parasite; as a consequence, this presentation will be influenced by HIV-induced immunosuppression. As leishmaniasis commonly affects the skin, increasing immunosuppression changes the clinical presentation, such as in post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL); dermal lesions are also commonly reported in visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and HIV co-infection.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature with

Leishmaniasis is a disease with worldwide increasing incidence, which in Germany is almost exclusively observed in patients who have travelled to classical endemic regions such as the Mediterranean basin. Cause of the disease is an infection with protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania, which are transmitted by sand flies and replicate intracellularly within mammalian hosts. Depending on the inoculated parasite (sub-) species and the immune status of the host, a local cutaneous, diffuse cutaneous, mucocutaneous or visceral form of leishmaniasis will develop. Cutaneous leishmaniasis, which

Leishmania amazonensis is one of the etiological agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis in its localised form. Moreover, this parasite can cause more severe disease conditions, such as diffuse and disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis. The development of more severe clinical manifestations is associated with the parasite's ability to establish a chronic infection and disseminate to cutaneous tissues distal to the site of primary infection. This ability is dependent on host immune factors but is also influenced by intrinsic factors of the parasite related to pathogenicity and evasion of the immune sy

Phlebotomine sandflies of the Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia genera are vectors for the spread of Leishmania parasites. Leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection most common in the Middle East and Central and South America. Few cases have been reported in the United States, with most patients presenting after returning from travel to other countries; however, the parasite has been locally acquired in Texas and Oklahoma. Clinical presentation varies depending on the species of Leishmania. There are 4 general clinical classifications of leishmaniasis: cutaneous, diffuse cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and vis

An infrequent and atypical case report of HIV-associated visceral leishmaniasis complicated by a diffuse, aspecific maculo-papular cutaneous involvement was characterized by a prolonged course, and a lack of response to repeated attack/maintenance cycles performed with liposomal amphotericin B, despite a satisfactory immune response maintained thanks to a concurrent, potent combination antiretroviral treatment. Only a very prolonged administration of the older i.v. pentamidine isethionate together with oral paromomycin led to a slow, but complete cure of both visceral leishmaniasis and its rel

Background. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is an inflammatory parasitic infection characterized by superficial and deep perivascular infiltration with or without granuloma formation. Clinical diagnosis usually requires seeing Leishmania bodies. Methods. We report two cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis with unusual histological finding of panniculitis. Case 1: a 36-year-old male presented with multiple ulcerative nodules involving the left leg for two months duration which was greatly responsive to antimony intralesional therapy. Case 2: A 45-year-old woman presented with painless nodules on her upper c

The Montenegro skin test is widely used as a diagnostic method for American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). However, there is little information about the histological changes that occur after administration of the antigen, especially in dogs. Two intradermal reactions were used in mongrel dogs during a clinical and epidemiological study as a diagnostic method for canine cutaneous leishmaniasis at Virginópolis, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Leishvacin and P10,000G were used as antigens. The inflammatory reaction was more intense and diffuse in dogs tested with P10,000G than Leishvacin.

The state of Tabasco is localized in the endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis where both diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis have recently been reported. The objective of the present study was to obtain reliable information of the situation of this disease--which has a great relevance as a worldwide public health problem--through determination of the allergic index in a randomized sample from Ranchería Miguel Hidalgo, Comalcalco Municipality, Tabasco, Mexico. We found an allergic index of 56 per cent. Farmers and housewives had the highest positive responses to t

OBJECTIVES: Localized cutaneous leishmaniasis and its evolving forms diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis, mucosal leishmaniasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis recidivans, together with the visceral leishmaniasis sequelae post-kala azar dermal leishmaniasis account for about one million dermal leishmaniases cases per year worldwide. Although not lethal, the dermal leishmaniases cause chronic and disfiguring skin lesions, which are an important cause of morbidity and stigma.Microscopy remains the reference test for diagnosis of dermal leishmaniasis; however, it has low and variable sensitivity and requ

CD8 T cells are essential in the defence against viruses, yet little is known of their participation in the host defence against parasites, such as Leishmania, which can cause a variety of clinical diseases, such as localized cutaneous, diffuse cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. Murine models of leishmaniasis suggest that CD8 T cells participate through IFN-gamma production, yet their cytotoxic capacity also plays an important role, as has been found in patients infected with various Leishmania strains, where CD8 T cell cytotoxicity and apoptosis of autologous Leishmania-infe

The clinico-pathological and immunological findings in eight patients from Bahia, Brazil with disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis are described. This condition differs from anergic diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis (DCL) and from classical American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). The number of lesions in these patients ranged from 75 to 800 and were characterized by papules and an acneiform type of lesion with a few ulcers rather than nodules that are the main characteristic of DCL. On the other hand the high incidence of mucosal disease (38%) in patients with disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasi

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a protozoan infectious disease and widespread in Mediterranean basin including Turkey. Lesions usually start with erythematous papules, gradually enlarges and afterwards it ulcerates. We present a 12-year-old boy with diffuse persistent lip swelling mimicking granulomatous cheilitis. Systemic glucantime was started. However, severe hypotension and bradycardia was developed after injection. Oral fluconazole was started and the lesion resolved completely. Cutaneous leishmaniasis can have varied clinical manifestations and should be suspected especially in endemic areas

Leishmaniasis is emerging as a common and serious opportunistic disease for patients with HIV infection. Almost all cases of HIV-Leishmania coinfection have been described in Mediterranean countries and they occur with various clinical presentations, ranging from typical visceral forms to asymptomatic or atypical cases, including cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. Pentavalent antimony compounds have been the mainstays of antileishmanial therapy for half a century and new lipid formulations of amphotericin B seem reliable, but the most effective treatment remains unknown. We describe a

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Leishmania and it is a significant global health problem. The disease has a wide clinical spectrum, from tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) that encompasses cutaneous (CL), mucosal (ML) and cutaneous-diffuse (CDL) forms, to the potentially fatal systemic visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Neurological manifestations are not generally considered as classical clinical signs or symptoms of leishmaniasis, but in this review, we present evidence that this is a false assumption. We examine brain involvement in human

The usefulness and sensitivity of a direct agglutination test (DAT) in the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania aethiopica infection has been investigated. Formalin-fixed, trypsin-treated and Coomassie blue-stained Leishmania promastigotes of various origins were used as antigens. L. major, L. donovani, L. aethiopica but not L. tropica antigen preparations were able to distinguish sera from individuals infected with Leishmania from sera of uninfected controls, although the titres of sera from patients with localized cutaneous leishmaniasis were low. Comparable results were ob
