Care of Ebola Survivors and Factors Associated With Clinical Sequelae-Monrovia, Liberia.

BACKGROUND: The Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) Clinic was the first clinic to provide free, comprehensive care to Ebola virus disease (EVD) survivors in Liberia. The objectives of this analysis were to describe the demographics and symptoms of EVD survivors at ELWA from January 2015 through March 2017 and to identify risk factors for development of sequelae. METHODS: Patients' demographic and clinical information was collected by chart review in June 2016 and March 2017. Associations with clinical sequelae were analyzed using the chi-square test, t test, and multivariate logistic regressi

Lack of Cultural Competency in International Aid Responses: The Ebola Outbreak in Liberia.

A cornerstone of effective disaster management is that response should always begin and end at the local level (1). The response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia, West Africa, was a combination of independent efforts by many nations and organizations. Many of these independent efforts ignored or were not able to work with the local levels of emergency management in Liberia. This oversight occurred because of the Liberian's mistrust of both their government and foreign aid groups, as well as the lack of cultural competency demonstrated by the aid groups. The health-care and

Health system preparedness for integration of mental health services in rural Liberia.

BACKGROUND: There are increasing efforts and attention focused on the delivery of mental health services in primary care in low resource settings (e.g., mental health Gap Action Programme, mhGAP). However, less attention is devoted to systematic approaches that identify and address barriers to the development and uptake of mental health services within primary care in low-resource settings. Our objective was to prepare for optimal uptake by identifying barriers in rural Liberia. The country's need for mental health services is compounded by a 14-year history of political violence and the large

Consequences of vector behavior in epidemiology of onchocerciasis on the Firestone Rubber Plantation in Liberia.

In the current study, we have assessed the distribution of black fly vectors and the occurrence of onchocerciasis among residents of the Firestone Rubber Plantation (FRP) in Liberia. The degree of endemicity of onchocerciasis on the FRP is correlated with the breeding of Simulium yahense on the Du River and Simulium soubrense on the Farmington River, as well as with the feeding behavior of these black fly vectors. S. yahense is highly anthropophilic and highly susceptible to Onchocerca volvulus, thus, it is apparently the primary vector of O. volvulus on the plantation. S. soubrense is predomi

The haemoglobin pattern of sickle cell and haemoglobin C beta +-thalassaemia in Liberia.

Haemoglobin components in 21 Liberians with Hb S beta +-thalassaemia and four with Hb C beta +-thalassaemia were measured to classify the forms of beta +-thalassaemia present in the population. In 20 Hb S and all Hb C beta +-thalassaemics the data were consistent with the interaction of these variants with the mild type 2 (Negro) form of beta +-thalassaemia. The data available were insufficient to classify the remaining case, a young child. It was concluded that the clinically more severe type of beta +-thalassaemia giving Hb A levels of 5 to 15% in compound heterozygotes is probably uncommon

Dynamics and intensity of Wuchereria bancrofti transmission in the savannah and forest regions of Liberia.

In four villages in the savannah and in the rain forest of Liberia, regular assessment of the biting activity and infection rates of anthropophilic mosquitoes have been carried out through full annual cycles. The microfilaremia rates in the localities in the savannah were 18.3% and 20.0% and in those of the forest 10.3% and 12.5%. The all-night catches were performed inside ordinary inhibited houses at monthly or fortnightly intervals. Presence of infective larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti proved Anopheles gambiae, A. funestus and A. nili to be the local vectors. Biting densities were high in th

Trauma, risk, and resilience: A qualitative study of mental health in post-conflict Liberia.

The Liberian civil wars led to widespread destruction and devastation for its individuals, communities, and economy. However, individuals' subjective trauma experiences and long-term psychological impact remain relatively understudied. This study aims to explore context-specific traumatic events and examine how risk and protective factors combine with traumas to influence trajectories of suffering and recovery over time. We conducted 43 semi-structured interviews with Liberian adults who were present during the Liberian civil wars, and we used line-by-line open coding, thematic analysis, and a

Facing COVID-19 in Liberia: Adaptations of the Resilient and Responsive Health Systems Initiative.

The 5-year Resilient and Responsive Health Systems (RRHS)-Liberia Initiative, funded by PEPFAR via HRSA, launched in 2017 and was designed to support the implementation of Liberia's National Health Workforce Program as a means to improving HIV-related health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic, arrived in Liberia just five years after Ebola and during RRHS-Liberia's fourth year, impacted educational programs and threatened the project's continued work. This paper presents the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic posed to the RRHS partners, as well as adaptations they made to maintain progress tow

Overlooking the Obvious: Communication of Efficacy by the Mass Media During the Ebola Crisis in Liberia.

The role of mass media during a public health crisis is an ineluctable part of providing the public with critical information rapidly, particularly messages about self- and response efficacy. However, little is known about the role local news media play in disseminating efficacy information during infectious disease outbreaks. Here, we use the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Liberia as a case to explore this question. We content analyzed newspaper and radio messages disseminated between March 2014 and March 2015, during the midst of the outbreak. Results show that both radio programs and newspaper arti

'Never say never': the first successful management of a type A aortic dissection in Liberia.

The West African country of Liberia ranks as one of the lowest in the world in most measures of health. The diagnosis and management of complex surgical cases such as aortic dissection is extremely challenging, for reasons ranging from lack of diagnostic imaging capabilities to the high resources required for definitive surgical intervention. We present the first known successfully managed case of aortic dissection in the country's history and with it highlight the challenges faced and a number of lessons learned that are beneficial to anyone working in resource-limited environments.

The impact of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic on agricultural production and livelihoods in Liberia.

There is unequivocal evidence in the literature that epidemics adversely affect the livelihoods of individuals, households and communities. However, evidence in the literature is dominated by the socioeconomic impacts of HIV/AIDS and malaria, while evidence on the impact of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) on households' livelihoods remains fragmented and scant. Our study investigates the effect of the EVD epidemic on the livelihoods of Liberian households using the Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF). The study also explores the effect of the EVD epidemic on agricultural production and produc

The Ebola epidemic in Liberia and managing the dead-A future role for Humanitarian Forensic Action?

With some of their economies, communities and health systems weakened by decades of war and poor governance, it was no accident that an epidemic of Ebola virus disease broke out in west Africa. Being spread in part by contact with body fluids of those who had died from the disease, funerary rites and the way dead bodies were managed were important modes of transmission. The Liberian Red Cross, supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, undertook the challenging task of managing the dead bodies in Monrovia

"We are survivors and not a virus:" Content analysis of media reporting on Ebola survivors in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: The Ebola virus disease epidemic between 2013 and 2016 in West Africa was unprecedented. It resulted in approximately 28.000 cases and 10.000 Ebola survivors. Many survivors face social, economic and health-related predicaments and media reporting is crucially important in infectious disease outbreaks. However, there is little research on reporting of the social situation of Ebola survivors in Liberia. METHODS: The study used a mixed methods approach and analysed media reports from the Liberian Daily Observer (DOL), a daily newspaper available online in English. We were interested

The laboratory health system and its response to the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Liberia.

The laboratory system in Liberia has generally been fragmented and uncoordinated. Accordingly, the country's Ministry of Health established the National Reference Laboratory to strengthen and sustain laboratory services. However, diagnostic testing services were often limited to clinical tests performed in health facilities, with the functionality of the National Reference Laboratory restricted to performing testing services for a limited number of epidemic-prone diseases. The lack of testing capacity in-country for Lassa fever and other haemorrhagic fevers affected the response of the country

A case series study on the effect of Ebola on facility-based deliveries in rural Liberia.

BACKGROUND: As communities' fears of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa exacerbate and their trust in healthcare providers diminishes, EVD has the potential to reverse the recent progress made in promoting facility-based delivery. Using retrospective data from a study focused on maternal and newborn health, this analysis examined the influence of EVD on the use of facility-based maternity care in Bong Country, Liberia, which shares a boarder with Sierra Leone - near the epicenter of the outbreak. METHODS: Using a case series design, retrospective data from logbooks were collected at 12

Failure of Onchocerca gutturosa to develop in Simulium soubrense and Simulium yahense from Liberia.

Laboratory reared female S. soubrense and S. yahense from Liberia were intrathoracically inoculated with bovine skin dwelling microfilariae of Onchocerca gutturosa. Of a total of 174 flies, each injected with 50 fresh microfilariae, the maximum development was to late first-stage larvae. One S. soubrense also contained two second-stage larvae and a maldeveloped third-stage larvae. No development to normal third-stage larvae was observed in any fly despite maintenance at 28 degrees C for up to 10 days following infection. This contrasts with complete development of O. volvulus in both blackfly

Fractional-order modeling of human behavior in infections: analysis using real data from Liberia.

This paper presents a fractional-order model using the Caputo differential operator to study Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) dynamics, calibrated with Liberian data. The model demonstrates improved accuracy over integer-order counterparts, particularly in capturing behavioral changes during outbreaks. Stability analysis, Lyapunov functions, and a validated numerical method strengthen its mathematical foundation. Simulations highlight its utility in accurately describing EVD evolution and guiding outbreak management. The study underscores the role of behavioral interventions in epidemic control, offe

How Depression and Anxiety Impact Adherence to COVID-19 Prevention Practices in Urban Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the relationship between mental health and COVID-19 prevention practices is crucial but challenging considering COVID-19's impact on mental well-being. Liberia, a West African country, had well-documented rates of depression and anxiety prior to COVID-19. Liberia responded aggressively to COVID-19 while case counts remained low; thus, it is an ideal setting to study the relationship of mental health and COVID-19 prevention practices. METHODS: A validated cross-sectional survey was administered to 250 randomly selected residents of Montserrado county, Liberia in June
