Delayed and disorganised brain activation detected with magnetoencephalography after mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Awareness to neurocognitive issues after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is increasing, but currently no imaging markers are available for mTBI. Advanced structural imaging recently showed microstructural tissue changes and axonal injury, mild but likely sufficient to lead to functional deficits. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has high temporal and spatial resolution, combining structural and electrophysiological information, and can be used to examine brain activation patterns of regions involved with specific tasks. METHODS: 16 adults with mTBI and 16 matched controls were subm

Neural correlation of successful cognitive behaviour therapy for spider phobia: a magnetoencephalography study.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can be an effective treatment for spider phobia, but the underlying neural correlates of therapeutic change are yet to be specified. The present study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to study responses within the first half second, to phobogenic stimuli in a group of individuals with spider phobia prior to treatment (n=12) and then in nine of them following successful CBT (where they could touch and manage live large common house spiders) at least 9 months later. We also compared responses to a group of age-matched healthy control participants (n=11). Part

Recruitment patterns of hothubs and dark functional networks correlating activity and connectivity with magnetoencephalography.

In functional imaging studies, the activity and functional connectivity of regions of interest (ROIs) are two indexes to measure the importance of ROIs. This study aimed to investigate the activity-connectivity coupling relationships of ROIs during action observation-induced swallowing imagery and non-induced swallowing imagery tasks. Magnetoencephalography data were collected from fourteen healthy young participants. Time-frequency analysis of event-related spectral perturbations was conducted to assess the activity of ROIs during the tasks. Using corrected imaginary phase locking values to c

Effect of electroconvulsive therapy on neural oscillations in schizophrenia: A magnetoencephalography resting-state study.

OBJECTIVE: Schizophrenia is a complex, chronic mental disorder, and pharmacologic treatment alone is often insufficient. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a rapid-acting and widely employed physical intervention for schizophrenia, yet its underlying mechanisms remain elusive. The present study aims to elucidate how ECT modulates brain activity in patients with this disorder. METHODS: A total of 26 patients with schizophrenia scheduled for ECT and 24 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. Resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) data and clinical assessments, including the Po

Atypical Change Detection in Sound Sequences: A Behavioral and Magnetoencephalography Study in Congenital Amusia.

Pitch change detection and pitch memory are behaviorally impaired in congenital amusia. Yet rather preserved mismatch negativity (MMN) to unexpected pitch changes has previously been reported using EEG, suggesting a discrepancy between conscious and preattentive pitch perception in this population. Coupling MEG with EEG, our study re-examined MMN in congenital amusia in light of two factors: stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) and change size of the deviant. Individuals with and without congenital amusia passively listened to oddball sequences with either frequency (pitch) or intensity (loudness)

Turnover of resting-state synaptic activity in posttraumatic stress disorder as revealed by magnetoencephalography.

Several neuroimaging modalities used in the study of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have documented various alterations in brain structure, function, and neurocircuitry relative to controls. Studies using magnetoencephalography (MEG), which provides direct evaluation of synaptic activity, have identified anomalies in neural communication prominently involving temporal areas. Here, we shift the focus from global neural interactions to evaluate moment-to-moment change in resting-state local synaptic activity, which we refer to as MEG turnover (MEGT) in 495 US veterans. Specifically, we com

Prediction of hypnotic trance with brain-evoked responses to an auditory oddball using magnetoencephalography.

Hypnosis is widely used in pain management. This technique involves the induction of a hypnotic trance, which is a state of consciousness distinct from normal waking state (critical consciousness). In this altered state, individuals become more receptive to the hypnotherapist's suggestions, which can influence their perception, especially of pain. However, hypnotic trance is a fluctuating state that is diagnosed by signs that are not pathognomonic. To address the issue of subjective assessment, we propose a method to accurately and in real time predict an individual's state of consciousness us

Functional reorganization of brain regions into a network in childhood absence epilepsy: A magnetoencephalography study.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is considered as a network disorder. However, it is unknown how normal brain activity develops into the highly synchronized discharging activity seen in disordered networks. This study aimed to explore the epilepsy brain network and the significant re-combined brain areas in childhood absence epilepsy (CAE). METHODS: Twenty-two children with CAE were recruited to study the neural source activity during ictal-onset and interictal periods at frequency bands of 1-30 Hz and 30-80 Hz with magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanning. Accumulated source imaging (ASI) was used to analyz

Magnetoencephalography detects rectification of abnormal brain hypercorrelations following abstinence from alcohol in chronic alcoholism.

Here, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate changes in brain functional organization and their time course following alcohol abstinence in chronic alcoholic patients. Eighteen male veterans (10 control and 8 currently alcohol-dependent) participated in this study. MEG in alcoholic participants was obtained on various days, starting at day 3 of alcohol abstinence. A MEG scan consisted of a 45-s data acquisition period from 248 whole head axial gradiometers at a frequency of 1.017 kHz. All 30,628 pairwise zero-lag cross-correlations (CC0) between prewhitened sensor time courses per

Altered resting-state functional connectivity in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: A magnetoencephalography study.

Aberrant cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuits have been implicated in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the neurobiological basis of OCD remains unclear. We compared patterns of functional connectivity in patients with OCD and in healthy controls using resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG). Participants comprised 24 patients with OCD (21 men, 3 women) and 22 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (19 men, 3 women). Resting-state measurements were obtained over a 6-min period using a 152-channel whole-head MEG system. We examined group differences

Hazardous nature of high-temporal-frequency strobe light stimulation: neural mechanisms revealed by magnetoencephalography.

Individuals in contemporary society are continually exposed to various visual stimuli. Such stimulation, especially when high in temporal frequency, may sometimes cause unexpected events such as photosensitive seizures. Although many studies have demonstrated that high-temporal-frequency (>3 Hz) visual stimulation can yield hazardous responses in the CNS, the mechanisms by which it does so are still unclear. We therefore investigated the mechanisms of neural perturbation by high-temporal-frequency strobe light stimulation with high-temporal-frequency resolution (4-20 Hz with an interval of 2 H

Neuronal network pharmacodynamics of GABAergic modulation in the human cortex determined using pharmaco-magnetoencephalography.

Neuronal network oscillations are a unifying phenomenon in neuroscience research, with comparable measurements across scales and species. Cortical oscillations are of central importance in the characterization of neuronal network function in health and disease and are influential in effective drug development. Whilst animal in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology is able to characterize pharmacologically induced modulations in neuronal activity, present human counterparts have spatial and temporal limitations. Consequently, the potential applications for a human equivalent are extensive. Here,

Metaplasticity in swallowing system via cross-modal neurostimulation: A randomized crossover trial with magnetoencephalography.

The response to neurostimulation can be modulated based on the state of neural network activation prior to stimulation, a mechanism termed metaplasticity. In the swallowing system, preconditioning the pharyngeal motor cortex with non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) can induce metaplasticity. However, the effects of cross-modal neurostimulation, i.e. combined peripheral (pharyngeal electrical stimulation; PES) and central (transcranial direct current stimulation; tDCS) approaches, remain unknown. This study investigated the effects of PES preconditioned by tDCS on cortical activation of swall

Dynamic, state-dependent characteristics of cognitive fluctuations in Lewy body dementia: a magnetoencephalography study.

Cognitive fluctuations are a hallmark clinical feature of Lewy body dementia (LBD), yet their underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify dynamic, state-dependent neural signatures of cognitive fluctuations in LBD using magnetoencephalography and dynamic functional connectivity based on hidden Markov modelling. Resting-state magnetoencephalography data were acquired from individuals with LBD, Parkinson's disease without dementia and cognitively normal controls. Hidden Markov modelling was used to identify transient brain states followed by spectral analy
