Effect of marital status on the survival of patients with gallbladder cancer treated with surgical resection: a population-based study.

The substantial progress in neurobiological technologies has narrowed the horizons of many psychiatrists, ultimately leading them to focus exclusively on biomedical research, primarily aimed at studying the biological basis of mental illnesses. This has led to an unjustified dominance of the biomedical paradigm in understanding the nature of mental disorders, while virtually ignoring the study of other components of the disease related to the psychosocial maladjustment of patients. This trend, largely associated with advancements in neuroscience employing neuroimaging techniques to study the b

Risk of spontaneous abortion in Italy, 1978-1995, and the effect of maternal age, gravidity, marital status, and education.

This paper describes the trend in the risk of spontaneous abortion in Italy from 1974 to 1995. There was a dramatic decline in the risk after the law that legalized induced abortion was passed in 1978, which implies that probably many induced abortions performed before 1978 were registered as spontaneous abortions. Data for 1991 have been extracted from the Italian national registers of births and abortions and analyzed to investigate the effects of maternal age, gravidity, marital status, and education on the risk of spontaneous abortion. In comparison with women under age 20 years, the risk

Marital status in relation to Kaposi's sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and anal cancer in the pre-AIDS era.

Persons with human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS are at high risk of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and possibly anal cancers. To examine whether this risk preceded the AIDS epidemic, we used pre-AIDS era data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program (excluding Connecticut) from 1973 to 1976, and the Connecticut Tumor Registry from 1940 to 1976. We compared risk of being single (a surrogate to identify men who might be homosexual) to those ever married, using a case control matching study with up to 10 controls per case. Overall, no excess risk was observe

An Intersectional Examination of How Class, Marital Status, and Age Shape Discrimination Among Black Women Who Are Postpartum.

INTRODUCTION: Intersectionality posits that multiple social categories (eg, race, gender, class) interact to create systems in which people experience discrimination differently. Among Black women, limited work has explored intersections beyond race, pregnancy status, and gender. This study compares experiences of racism and discrimination by multidimensional social category, inclusive of socioeconomic status (SES), marital status, and age, among Black women who are postpartum. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional survey data from 197 self-identified Black women aged 18 years or older with a

Association between psychological disorders and migraine in young U.S. adults with gender-specific analysis and marital status considerations.

BACKGROUND: Emerging biopsychosocial perspectives emphasize the complex interplay between psychological burden and migraine, particularly during young adulthood-a period marked by neurodevelopmental vulnerability and shifting social roles. However, gender-specific associations and the modifying role of marital status in this context remain poorly understood. METHODS: This population-based study analyzed 3,180 U.S. young adults aged 20-39 years using the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Migraine was identified via self-reported symptoms and medication use; psychologi

Momentary loneliness and intrusive thoughts among older adults: the interactive roles of mild cognitive impairment and marital status.

OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is associated with maladaptive cognitions, yet little is known about the association between loneliness and intrusive thinking during older adulthood. Links between loneliness and intrusive thoughts may be particularly strong among individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), who may have greater difficulty regulating emotion and intrusive thoughts. In contrast, having close relationships (e.g. being married) may serve as a protective factor as marital status is associated with better overall well-being. METHOD: Participants were 316 older adults (recruited from th

Marital quality and loneliness as predictors for subjective health status in cardiac rehabilitation patients following percutaneous coronary intervention.

BACKGROUND: Low marital quality is associated with adverse health outcomes and lower personal well-being. Loneliness increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality and predicts poor quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between marital quality and loneliness and subjective health status in primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) patients who underwent cardiac rehabilitation (CR). DESIGN/METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, pPCI patients that followed CR were included between 2009-2011. A total of 223 patients responded to the Short

Marital status, immigration, and reproductive health among adolescent mothers in Canada, 1990-2018: A population-based, observational study.

Immigrants to Canada increasingly come from regions where child marriage (<18 years) is prevalent. We described the prevalence, demographic characteristics, and reproductive health correlates of marriage among births to Canadian-born and foreign-born adolescent mothers. Using Canadian birth registrations from 1990 to 2018, marriage prevalence, parental birth region, and parental age gap were examined by maternal birthplace (Canada and 12 world regions) among births to mothers <18 years. Adjusted odds ratios (AORs) of preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age (SGA), and repeat birth were e

Does Sexual Orientation Complicate the Relationship Between Marital Status and Gender With Self-rated Health and Cardiovascular Disease?

A substantial body of work has demonstrated the importance of marital status for health, yet the vast majority of this work has studied heterosexual marriages and relationships. To understand the role of marital status in shaping health among heterosexual, lesbian, gay, and bisexual men and women, we examine data from a probability-based sample of adults living in 40 U.S. states for selected years between 2011-2015. We test two physical health outcomes-poor-to-fair self-rated health and cardiovascular disease-and present predicted probabilities and pairwise comparisons from logistic regression

Marital status as an independent prognostic factor for survival in women with vaginal cancer: evidence from the SEER database analysis.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of marital status on the survival outcomes of women diagnosed with vaginal cancer, considering the potential role of sociodemographic factors in patient prognosis. Utilizing data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, the study included 6046 women with primary vaginal cancer diagnosed between 2000 and 2020. The propensity score matching (PSM) method was employed to balance comparison groups and account for confounding factors. The primary outcomes were overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS), with Cox proportio

Effects of Marital Status on Hypopharynx Squamous Cell Carcinoma Survival Stratified by Demographic and Pathological Factors: A Retrospective Study.

Objectives: Understanding the interaction between marital status and gender, race, and age is important for developing tailored interventions aimed at improving socio-emotional support for patients. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore the correlation between marital status and hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and whether the association varied by age, race, and gender. Methods: We examined the clinicopathological variables using chi-squared tests and we evaluated the association between survival and different variables using the methods of Kaplan-Meier. Univariate and

Investigating the association between marital status and survival outcomes in patients with follicular thyroid carcinoma: a population-based analysis.

Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) represents a distinct subtype of thyroid malignancy; however, the prognostic significance of marital status, a recognized social determinant in various other cancers, remains inadequately characterized within this specific patient population. This retrospective cohort study leveraged data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to explore the relationship between marital status and survival outcomes among 7954 patients diagnosed with FTC from 2004 to 2015. Patients were classified as either married or unmarried, and overall surviv

Effect of marital status on years of life lost from metastatic bladder cancer according to sex and race/ethnicity.

INTRODUCTION: It is unknown whether marital status affects years of life lost (YLL) in metastatic urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder (mUCUB), according to sex and race/ethnicity. METHODS: Within SEER database (2004-2021), unmarried and married mUCUB patients aged 40-80 years were identified. Age- and sex-matched controls were generated (Social Security Administration life tables and Monte Carlo simulation). Years of life lost (YLL) were quantified, relative to age- and sex-matched simulated population controls. RESULTS: In unmarried male mUCUB patients (n = 1,976), the distribution

Prognostic impacts of marital status and other socioeconomic factors in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: an analysis of SEER database.

BACKGROUND: Marital status has been demonstrated to impact the outcomes of several malignancies. The prognostic role of marital status in chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) has not been determined. METHODS: We identified 67,238 patients with CLL/SLL from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The patients were randomly divided into the training and validation cohorts. The univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to screen the predictors for overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS). The nomogram

The impact of marital status on tumor aggressiveness, treatment, and screening among black and white men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: To examine the association of marital status with prostate cancer outcomes in a racially-diverse cohort. METHODS: The study population consisted of men (1010 Black; 1070 White) with incident prostate cancer from the baseline North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer (PCaP) cohort. Marital status at time of diagnosis and screening history were determined by self-report. The binary measure of marital status was defined as married (including living as married) vs. not married (never married, divorced/separated, or widowed). High-aggressive tumors were defined using a composite measure of

Effects of Social and Contextual Factors Including Marital Status and Children on the Use of Palliative Chemotherapy in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that social and contextual factors such as living alone are associated with outcomes in cancer patients. However, little is known about their influence on the use of palliative chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). In this study, we examined social and contextual factors, including marital status, having children, and distance to a cancer center, for their association with the use of chemotherapy in patients with mCRC. METHODS: A cohort of patients with mCRC diagnosed from 2006 to 2010 in Saskatchewan was evaluated. Logistic regression analyses wer
