Cholera in Haiti and other Caribbean regions, 19th century.

Medical journals and other sources do not show evidence that cholera occurred in Haiti before 2010, despite the devastating effect of this disease in the Caribbean region in the 19th century. Cholera occurred in Cuba in 1833-1834; in Jamaica, Cuba, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Lucia, St. Kitts, Nevis, Trinidad, the Bahamas, St. Vincent, Granada, Anguilla, St. John, Tortola, the Turks and Caicos, the Grenadines (Carriacou and Petite Martinique), and possibly Antigua in 1850-1856; and in Guadeloupe, Cuba, St. Thomas, the Dominican Republic, Dominica, Martinique, and Marie Galante in 1865-1872. Rapid confirmation of autochthonous origin in suspected cases of melioidosis from French overseas departments in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean by PCR-high resolution melting (HRM) analysis.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, a soil-borne bacterium that causes melioidosis, endemic in South and Southeast Asia and northern Australia, is now emerging in new regions. Since the 1990s, cases have been reported in French overseas departments, including Martinique and Guadeloupe in the Caribbean, and Reunion Island and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, suggesting a local presence of the bacterium. Our phylogenetic analysis of 111 B. pseudomallei genomes isolated worldwide, including three strains from Martinique, revealed distinct geography-specific clades for Africa, the Americas, Asia and Australasi

10-year educational programme aimed at rheumatic fever in two French Caribbean islands.

BACKGROUND: In less developed countries, rheumatic fever still occurs. We started a long-term educational programme in two French Caribbean islands that was directed at the public and at health-care workers to see whether we could reduce the incidence of rheumatic fever. METHODS: Our 10-year programme started in 1981 in Martinique and Guadeloupe, and was based in the community and in clinics and hospitals. The programme established a registry of all cases of primary and secondary rheumatic fever (diagnosed by Jones' modified criteria), with systematic hospital admission of children. We graded

Heartwater in Guadeloupe and in the Caribbean.

A sero-epidemiological survey for heartwater was organized in 1992 in the Lesser Antilles, from Grenada to Saint Martin. Blood from about one percent of the ruminant livestock of the islands was randomly sampled and the sera were tested with an indirect ELISA. The percentage of positive sera was found to be 30% in Guadeloupe, 25% in Antigua, 2.2% in St.Martin, 1.3% in St. Kitts & Nevis, 3.8% in Montserrat, 1.7% in Dominica, 1.5% in St.Lucia, 1.5% in St.Vincent, 3.5% in Barbados, 2.9% in Grenada and 7% in Martinique. Ruminants from Guadeloupe and Antigua are known to be infected with heartwater

Nucleotide sequence and phylogenetic analyses of dengue type 2 virus isolated in the Dominican Republic.

Dengue virus infection has been recognized as an important public health problem in the Dominican Republic in the last decade. Complete genomic sequences of three strains of dengue type 2 (DEN-2) virus, DR23/01 and DR31/01 isolated from dengue fever (DF) patients, and DR59/01 isolated from a dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patient, all with primary infection, in the Dominican Republic in 2001, have been established. This achievement constitutes the first genomic characterization of DEN-2 strains from the Dominican Republic. No amino acid differences were observed between the strains isolated fr

Evaluating the ten-year health impact of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3) exposure from sargassum seaweed invasions in the Caribbean: Public health implications.

Since 2011, the Caribbean region-including Martinique, Guadeloupe, and French Guiana-has experienced increasing invasions of Sargassum seaweed, leading to significant environmental, economic, and public health challenges. This study evaluates the health impacts of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and ammonia (NH₃) emissions from decomposing Sargassum on affected populations. Data were collected from 850 patients admitted to the University Hospital of Martinique between January 2018 and September 2024, all of whom had been exposed to Sargassum emissions for an average of 2-3 months annually. Reported sym

Re-Emergence of DENV-3 in French Guiana: Retrospective Analysis of Cases That Circulated in the French Territories of the Americas from the 2000s to the 2023-2024 Outbreak.

French Guiana experienced an unprecedented dengue epidemic during 2023-2024. Prior to the 2023-2024 outbreak in French Guiana, DENV-3 had not circulated in an epidemic manner since 2005. We therefore studied retrospectively the strains circulating in the French Territories of the Americas (FTA)-French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Martinique-from the 2000s to the current epidemic. To this end, DENV-3 samples from the collection of the National Reference Center for Arboviruses in French Guiana (NRCA-FG) were selected and sequenced using next-generation sequencing (NGS) based on Oxford Nanopore Techno

Articulations of poisoning: historicity, relationality, and contextuality of Chlordecone pollution in the French Antilles.

Chlordecone, a highly persistent organochlorine insecticide, was widely applied to banana plantations in Martinique and Guadeloupe from 1972 until being banned in 1993. Decades later, its residues still permeate soil, waterways, food systems, and human bodies in the two islands. Classified as both a carcinogenic and an endocrine disruptor, the chemical compound has generated widespread protests, epidemiological debates, and political critique. Drawing on six months of non-consecutive ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Martinique between 2017 and 2022, this article examines how people interpre

Anicteric cholestasis among HIV infected patients with syphilis.

In Martinique, among 9 HIV carriers recently diagnosed with early syphilis, 7 had biologic cholestasis. Less than half of the patients had been diagnosed on clinical grounds for syphilis (cutaneous eruption or syphilis in partner), whereas most of them were diagnosed on a systematic screening of HIV infected patients.

Migration and multiple sclerosis: the French West Indies experience.

The French West Indies (FWI), i.e., the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, have recently experienced the emergence of multiple sclerosis (MS). This epidemiological upheaval followed a return migration of the FWI population that had previously migrated to continental France. The prevalence MS was 14.8/10(5) (95% CI: 11.9-17.7) on Dec. 31, 1999 and its mean annual incidence was 1.4/10(5) (95% CI: 1.0-1.8) for the period July 1997 to June 2002. The prevalence of MS in Martinique, that received more return migration, is higher than that of Guadeloupe (21.0/10(5) vs. 8.5/10(5)). This emergence o

Antibodies to HTLV-I p24 in sera of blood donors, elderly people and patients with hemopoietic diseases in France and in French West Indies.

Human T-cell lymphoma/leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) is a type-C retrovirus originally isolated from patients with leukemia or lymphoma involving mature T lymphocytes. Epidemiological studies have shown that HTLV-I infection occurs not only in leukemic but also in normal people in at least two areas of the world: the Caribbean basin and the South-West of Japan. We report here the results of a large seroepidemiological study of HTLV-I infection in normal French blood donors, elderly subjects living in institutions and patients with various malignant hemopathies, obtained by the classical HTLV-I

A population-based analysis of hematological malignancies from a French-West-Indies cancer registry's data (2009-2018).

BackgroundA worldwide increased incidence of HM has been marked in recent decades. Therefore, to update epidemiological characteristics of HM in a French West Indies territory, we have performed analysis through Martinique's population-based cancer registry database.MethodsWe included cancer case data, from 2009-2018, coded in strict compliance with international standards set by International Agency for Research on Cancer. We calculated standardized incidence rates, cumulative rate (ages 0-74), and temporal trends for cases and deaths using the global population standard, by sex and five age

The Expanding World of Human Leishmaniasis.

New Leishmania isolates form a novel group of human parasites related to Leishmania enrietti, with cases in Ghana, Thailand, and Martinique; other relatives infect Australian and South American wildlife. These parasites apparently cause both cutaneous and visceral disease, and may have evolved a novel transmission mechanism exploiting blood-feeding midges.

Human cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania naiffi is wide-spread in South America.

Four human cases of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania naiffi are reported. Two of the cases were infected in French Guiana, one in French Guiana or Martinique, and the other in Ecuador or Peru. The geographical distribution of L. naiffi is clearly larger than that initially reported. Three zymodemes were represented by the four isolates, confirming that there is intraspecific polymorphism in L. naiffi.

Environmental changes and epidemiology of multiple sclerosis in the French West Indies.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) emerged in the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe) at the beginning of the 1990s with an incidence for the period 1992-2007 of 1.27/100,000 (95% CI, 1.16-1.38). Its incidence, which is continuously increasing, reached 2.27/100,000 (95% CI, 1.92-2.62) in Martinique for the period 2002-07. Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), in contrast, has a stable incidence of 0.19/100,000 (95% CI, 0.15-0.23) resulting in a gradual increase in the MS/NMO ratio, which was 8.35 for the period 2002-07. MS initially affected the female population with a female/male incidence ratio of 8.
