Effectiveness of a meditation-based stress reduction program in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of a group stress reduction program based on mindfulness meditation for patients with anxiety disorders. METHOD: The 22 study participants were screened with a structured clinical interview and found to meet the DSM-III-R criteria for generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. Assessments, including self-ratings and therapists' ratings, were obtained weekly before and during the meditation-based stress reduction and relaxation program and monthly during the 3-month follow-up period. RESULTS: Re

Effectiveness of the Transcendental Meditation program in preventing and treating substance misuse: a review.

This article reviews 24 studies on the benefits of Transcendental Meditation (TM) in treating and preventing misuse of chemical substances. Studies cover noninstitutionalized users, participants in treatment programs, and prisoners with histories of heavy use. All the studies showed positive effects of the TM program. Some of the survey-type studies were unable to exclude the possibility of self-selection or responder biases. However, longitudinal, random-assignment studies with objective measures also showed positive results. Taken together, these and other studies indicate the program simult

A cross-sectional survey on depersonalization/derealization and meditation-induced alterations of the self.

Depersonalization/derealization (DPDR) involves feeling detached from one's body, thoughts, or emotions and is often triggered by trauma, stress, mental health issues, or drug use, typically causing high distress. Similar experiences are also reported in meditation contexts, where they are often described as positive, insightful, and meaningful. However, no study has systematically compared DPDR-like experiences across these contexts. This preregistered, cross-sectional study addresses this gap. Participants who had experienced DPDR-like states triggered through meditation (MEDT, n = 60) or th

The effect of mindfulness meditation nursing on the outcomes of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer.

This study investigated the impact of mindfulness meditation (MM) nursing on outcomes of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). A total of 100 infertile patients undergoing IVF-ET were randomly assigned to either a conventional care group or an MM group, with 50 patients in each. While both groups received routine nursing, the MM group received additional MM-based nursing interventions. Compared to the conventional group, the MM group showed significantly lower postoperative pain scores (VAS) and better psychological outcomes, as evidenced by improvements in anxiety (SAS), depression

Meditations on Methodological Issues in Clinical Investigations of "Central Sensitization" (Jonah XII).

This perspective paper addresses five methodological concerns in clinical investigations across the field of pain research and the paradigm of central sensitization. The first is the conflation of the phenomenon and the measurement tool: a patient reported outcome questionnaire called "Central Sensitization Inventory" is given as an example. Second, instruments that are used for measuring central sensitization (and its severity) are not validated to measure the phenomenon of central sensitization. The third is conceptual ambiguity regarding the theoretical framework of central sensitization an

Randomized controlled trial of neurofeedback mindfulness meditation as a practice for migraine management.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that mindfulness meditation may be beneficial for migraine symptoms; yet the potential of neurofeedback mindfulness meditation (NM) remains unexplored. PURPOSE: This randomized controlled trial investigates the efficacy of NM compared to a controlled attention task for managing migraine. METHODS: 101 adults with migraine participated in the study, wearing EEG headbands and engaging in 10-minute daily sessions of either NM (n = 49) or an audiobook listening task (n = 52) for eight weeks. While EEG raw data was collected for all participants, only the NM gro

Yoga, Meditation, and Mindfulness for Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review was to analyze research using yoga, meditation, and mindfulness (YMM) as a treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI). INTRODUCTION: The rationale for this review was to provide an understanding of the methodology and outcome measures used in studies that include YMM as TBI treatment. There are currently no reviews that investigate how all three of these modalities are used in TBI treatment. This review is meant to draw attention to how this research is done and potentially improve future research study design. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Criteria for

Progress and Challenges of Topical Delivery Technologies Meditated Drug Therapy for Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease commonly seen in middle-aged and elderly people. Multiple cytokines are involved in the local tissue damage in OA. Currently, non-pharmacologic and surgical interventions are the main conventional approaches for the treatment of OA. In terms of pharmaceutical drug therapy, NSAIDs and acetaminophen are mainly used to treat OA. However, it is prone to various adverse reactions such as digestive tract ulcer, thromboembolism, prosthesis loosening, nerve injury and so on. With the in-depth study of OA, more and more novel topical drug delivery strategie

A neurophenomenological approach to non-ordinary states of consciousness: hypnosis, meditation, and psychedelics.

No contemporary unifying framework has been provided for the study of non-ordinary states of consciousness (NSCs) despite increased interest in hypnosis, meditation, and psychedelics. NSCs induce shifts in experiential contents (what appears to the experiencer) and/or structure (how it appears). This can allow the investigation of the plastic and dynamic nature of experience from a multiscale perspective that includes mind, brain, body, and context. We propose a neurophenomenological (NP) approach to the study of NSCs which highlights their role as catalysts of transformation in clinical pract

An introduction to Kundalini yoga meditation techniques that are specific for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

The ancient system of Kundalini yoga includes a vast array of meditation techniques and many were discovered to be specific for treating the psychiatric disorders as we know them today. One such technique was found to be specific for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the fourth most common psychiatric disorder, and the tenth most disabling disorder worldwide. Two published clinical trials are described here for treating OCD using a specific Kundalini yoga protocol. This OCD protocol also includes techniques that are useful for a wide range of anxiety disorders, as well as a techniq

Brain criticality and advanced meditation "cessation" events: An intensively sampled electroencephalography case study.

Advanced meditation includes meditative endpoints that are outcomes of meditation practice and occur with time and mastery of meditation. The "cessation" event (c.f. nirodha in Theravada Buddhism) is a meditative endpoint characterized by a loss of consciousness followed by a sense of mental reset and deep clarity. In general, organization of brain activity exists along a "criticality" spectrum: order and disorder occupy the extremes, and the critical point, which is thought to represent optimal information processing, is in between. In this exploratory, hypothesis-generating case study, we as

Daily Stress and Heart Rate Variability Among Mindfulness Meditation Practitioners: mHealth Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness meditation has been reported to reduce stress and enhance well-being. However, its effects on heart rate variability (HRV)-a physiological marker of stress-remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine how meditation practice is associated with subjective stress, HRV, and their interaction, using mobile health technologies. METHODS: This 3-week observational study included 90 participants-19 meditation practitioners (meditation group), 32 recreational runners as an active control group characterized by lower stress and higher HRV (running group), and 39

EEG oscillatory correlates of meditation practice: a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis.

Meditation practice has been associated with changes in EEG oscillatory activity, although findings across studies remain heterogeneous. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined frequency-specific EEG patterns associated with meditation practice. Frequency-specific random-effects meta-analyses and multilevel nested mixed-effects meta-regression models were used to account for the non-independence of multiple effect sizes within studies. Significant positive pooled effects were observed for alpha, beta, and gamma oscillations, whereas no significant pooled effect was observed for theta

From Buddhist meditation to psychological well-being: an ethical-cultural training ecology model.

Buddhist meditation is widely studied in relation to mindfulness, emotion regulation, compassion, and well-being, yet it is often operationalized as an attentional or stress-reduction technique detached from the ethical and cultural conditions of practice. This article develops the ethical-cultural training ecology model, a Hypothesis and Theory framework that treats Buddhist meditation as a coordinated practice ecology rather than a single psychological technique. The model distinguishes four nested analytic levels. Ethical-cultural ecology provides the process-shaping context; a probabilisti

Health professionals' perspectives of integrating meditation into cardiovascular care: A descriptive qualitative study.

Preliminary research suggests that meditation may provide benefits in psychological health and well-being in people with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, little is known about health professionals' perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to integrating meditation into CVD. A descriptive qualitative study design with semi-structured interviews was used to explore the acceptability of integrating meditation into outpatient CVD programs and the organisational factors that may affect its integration. Clinicians were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling. E-mail addresses wer

Virtual Reality Meditation Among Youth Experiencing Homelessness: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Feasibility.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness among youth is devastating, with high rates of substance use disorders and mental health comorbidity. Mindfulness-based interventions that include meditation and mindfulness skills training reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety or depression. However, engaging high-risk youth in interventions is challenging. Virtual reality is a more flexible platform for delivering meditation and may be appealing to youth. OBJECTIVE: The study objectives were to evaluate the feasibility of delivering virtual reality meditation and of collecting outcome measures, including anxiety and
