Men with an FMR1 premutation and their health education needs.

Men who carry an FMR1 premutation are at-risk to develop a late-onset neurodegenerative disorder called fragile X-Associated Ataxia/Tremor syndrome (FXTAS). However, little is known about their health informational needs. This qualitative study is the first to describe diagnostic experiences and identify specific health information needs of male premutation carriers. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted by phone with ten men who carry an FMR1 premutation. Interviews were analyzed using direct content analysis. Saturation was assessed through use of the Comparative Method for Themes S

A multicomponent, place-based approach to improving men's health and well-being in disadvantaged areas: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Men in high-income countries tend to live shorter lives than women and are far more likely to die by suicide. This study examined the BoroManCan campaign, which was implemented in Middlesbrough, northern England, to improve men's health and well-being. The key components included a website and podcast to share men's stories, Men's Health Champions training, and funding for grassroots interventions. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 18 BoroManCan stakeholders (staff/volunteers, partner organisations, and intervention deliverers) were conducted by academic researchers, while

'You only care when it hurts' - men's engagement with their health: a qualitative interview study in Lower Austria.

BACKGROUND: Compared with women, men have a lower life expectancy, engage more frequently in risky health behaviours, underuse preventive healthcare services, and are less likely to attend routine health checks or seek mental health support. Their low participation rates indicate they show less interest in health promotion. Existing literature on barriers and facilitators to men's participation in health promotion programmes focuses on older adults from English-speaking countries. The present study's aim was to identify the preferences, attitudes, and barriers related to participation in commu

Using the Nominal Group Technique to Inform Approaches for Enhancing Men's Utilization of Sexual and Reproductive Health Services.

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services' underutilization by men remains a global public health challenge. SRH problems constitute major health challenges in that they form almost one-seventh of the disease burden and contribute to higher and earlier morbidity among men. We, therefore, invited subject matter experts to collaborate in co-creating intervention strategies to enhance men's utilization of SRH services. We employed the nominal group technique (NGT) for data collection. The NGT is a structured method that involves gathering a group of people to discuss a problem for the purpose

Easy to Lose and Risky to Regain? A Scoping Review of Experimentally Manipulated Masculinity Threat and Men's Health.

BackgroundMen live shorter lives and suffer more often from preventable diseases than women. This health pattern is associated with masculine norms that incentivize health-risk behavior. Masculinity threats represent a potential mechanism by which masculinity norms causally impact men's health behavior. In this scoping review, we map experimental evidence for health effects and moderators of masculinity threat.MethodsFollowing PRISMA-ScR guidance, we conducted a scoping review of experimentally manipulated masculinity threat and men's health across PsycNet, CINAHL, SCOPUS, MEDLINE, Embase, and

Understanding Black and Latino sexual minority men's perspectives on assessment of sexual history in diverse health care settings.

OBJECTIVE: This exploratory analysis aims to understand conditions under which cisgender Black and Latino sexual minority men (SMM) would be willing to share potentially abusive childhood sexual experiences with health care providers. Black and Latino SMM may be overrepresented among childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors, but some abusive experiences are appraised as consensual due to cultural pressures, leading to underreporting and a delay in identification and treatment. Prior research highlights the importance of screening for sexual abuse histories in primary care and substance use treat

Serum lipid profile levels and semen quality: new insights and clinical perspectives for male infertility and men's health.

PURPOSE: Several clinical scenarios regulate the final ejaculated semen, which is pivotal to reproductive success. Sperm motility and plasma membrane fusogenic activity primarily rely on the peculiar sperm lipid composition, influenced by the patient's metabolism, genetics, nutritional, environmental status, and concomitant clinical entities such as varicocele. This study aimed to determine the relationship between serum lipid profile and testicular function (semen quality and testosterone levels). METHODS: This retrospective study uses medical charts of 278 infertile men who attended androlo

Does a deadline improve men's participation in self-administered health surveys? A randomized controlled trial in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Self-administered questionnaires are commonly used in experimental studies to elicit quality of life or other outcomes. Hence, achieving an acceptable level of follow-up from patients is critical to minimizing bias. Many methods for maximizing follow-up remain untested. It is also unclear what level of follow-up is required to prevent bias being introduced. METHODS: We recruited 246 men from general practice surgeries in Sydney, Australia. These 246 men were randomized to receive a covering letter with their follow-up questionnaire either advising of a deadline to reply (Deadline,

Correlates of heavy substance use among young gay and bisexual men: The San Francisco Young Men's Health Study.

Correlates of heavy substance use among a household-based sample of young gay and bisexual men (n=428) were identified and the odds ratio (OR) was calculated. A total of 13.6% reported frequent, heavy alcohol use and 43% reported polydrug use. Compared with men employed in professional occupations, men in service positions (OR=3.77) and sales positions (OR=2.51) were more likely to be heavy alcohol consumers. Frequent gay bar attendance and multiple sex partners were related to heavy alcohol use, as well as to polydrug use. Polydrug users were more likely to be HIV seropositive (OR=2.05) or of

Valproate, sexual health, and men: A narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: This article explores current evidence about the effects of valproate (VPA) medicines on sexual health in men, how to monitor symptoms, communicate with patients, and improve clinical outcomes. There has been a lot of focus on VPA use in women of childbearing age following recent changes to prescribing regulations owing to the well-established and significant teratogenic risk. Concerns have been raised by patients and clinicians as to the risk of adverse sexual effects of VPA use in men. RESULTS: The evidence base for the effect of VPA on sexual function compared with other antiepi

Reproductive Health of Men with Spinal Cord Injury.

Most men with spinal cord injury (SCI) are infertile due to a combination of erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory dysfunction, and abnormal semen quality. This article addresses issues that should be considered when managing the reproductive health of men with SCI. The authors present recommendations based on their decades of experience in managing the reproductive health of more than 1,000 men with SCI. Men with SCI face obstacles when pursuing sexual activity and/or biologic fatherhood. Hypogonadism and premature symptoms of aging may interfere with sexual function. Erectile dysfunction is prev

Effects of syndemic psychiatric diagnoses on health indicators in men who have sex with men.

OBJECTIVE: Syndemic theory posits that co-occurring problems (e.g., substance use, depression, and trauma) synergistically increase HIV risk in men who have sex with men (MSM). However, most investigations have assessed these problems additively using self-report. METHOD: In a sample of HIV-negative MSM with trauma histories (n = 290), we test bivariate relationships between four clinical diagnoses (substance use disorder [SUD]); major depressive disorder [MDD], posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], and anxiety disorders) and their additive and interactive effects on three health indicators (
