Occurrence of cervical invasive root resorption in first and second molar teeth of orthodontic patients eight years after bracket removal.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence and potential orthodontic causes of cervical invasive root resorption (CIRR) are unknown. We aimed to identify the occurrence of CIRR in molar teeth of orthodontic patients treated with fixed appliances. METHODS: All patients invited for final orthodontic recall between November 2009 and March 2011 were included. From 175 patients, 108 (46 men/62 women; mean age, 25 ± 5 years; mean time after bracket removal, 8 ± 2 years) were available. The first and second molar teeth (N = 858) of these patients were investigated for clinical and radiographic signs of CIRR. Pati

Levels of interleukin-8 during tooth movement.

A host-derived neutrophil-activating cytokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) is secreted mainly by monocytes and is considered to be important in regulating alveolar bone resorption during tooth movement. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of IL-8 during mechanical forces on periodontal tissues at different stages of orthodontic therapy. Ten canine teeth of patients having different Angle classifications were selected for the study. After the premolars were extracted, the maxillary/mandibular canines were tipped distally. Gingival crevicular fluid was sampled from mesial and distal gingiva

Influence of restorative materials on the mechanical properties of maxillary first molars with different degrees of cryptic fractures and defects: A finite element analysis.

This study aimed to apply finite element analysis to evaluate the effects of pile materials with different elastic moduli and cement materials on the stress distribution between the remaining tooth tissue and cryptic fracture defects. A three-dimensional finite element model was established for 20 maxillary first molars with hidden fissures and mesial tongue-tip defects. Two levels of hidden cracks and three types of pile and adhesive materials were used in the design. The stress distribution and maximum stress peak in the remaining tooth tissue and crack defects were determined by simulating

Effects of pain associated with orthodontic tooth movement on tactile sensation of periodontal ligaments.

OBJECTIVES: Pain associated with orthodontic tooth movement reportedly reduces periodontal ligament tactile sensation. However, the mechanism associated with the central nervous system remains unclear. This study was conducted by measuring somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) during mechanical stimulation of teeth as they were being moved by separator elastics. Findings clarified the effects of pain on periodontal ligament tactile sensation during orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using magnetoencephalography, SEFs were measured during the application of mechanical sti

Effectiveness of the attachment position in molar intrusion with clear aligners: a finite element study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the biomechanical effects of different attachments' position for maxillary molar intrusion with clear aligner treatment by finite element analysis. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography images of a patient with supra-eruption of the maxillary second molars were selected to construct three-dimensional models of the maxilla, periodontal ligaments, dentition, and clear aligner. The models were divided into four groups depending on the attachment location on the first molar: (1) no attachment (NA), (2) buccal attachment (BA), (3) palatal attachment (PA), and (4) bucco-pala

Histomorphometric study of bone reactions during orthodontic tooth movement in rats.

The biological response to orthodontic tooth movement has generally focused on reactions within the periodontal ligament (PDL), whereas less attention has been paid to the behavior of neighboring bone. The purpose of the study was to describe the influence of orthodontic force on bone surrounding the displaced tooth and the adjacent, untreated teeth. Bone changes in relation to treatment time and different sites were investigated. A mesial tipping of the left maxillary first molar was obtained from 54 adult male Wistar rats. Oxytetracycline was injected subcutaneously 48 h before killing, whic

A multidisciplinary treatment of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors: a 14-year follow-up case report.

Absence of the maxillary lateral incisor creates an aesthetic problem which can be managed in various ways. The condition requires careful treatment planning and consideration of the options and outcomes following either space closure or prosthetic replacement. Recent developments in restorative dentistry have warranted a re-evaluation of the approach to this clinical situation. Factors relating both to the patient and the teeth, including the presentation of malocclusion and the effect on the occlusion must be considered. The objective of this study was to describe the etiology, prevalence an

Alkaline phosphatase activity in gingival crevicular fluid during human orthodontic tooth movement.

Bone remodeling that occurs during orthodontic tooth movement is a biologic process involving an acute inflammatory response in periodontal tissues. A sequence characterized by periods of activation, resorption, reversal, and formation has been recently described as occurring in both tension and compression tooth sites during orthodontic tooth movement. We used a longitudinal design to investigate alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) to assess whether it can serve as a diagnostic aid in orthodontics. Sixteen patients (mean age, 15.5 years) participated in the
