Sublethal exposure of heavy metals induces micronuclei in fish, Channa punctata.

Present studies were designed to evaluate toxic potential of three common heavy metals, adequately present in agro-industrial effluents, viz. mercury, arsenic and copper using in vivo micronucleus assay in an actinopterygiian fish, Channa punctata (2n=32). Ten days laboratory acclimatized fishes were divided into five groups. Groups I and II served as negative and positive controls, respectively and fishes of group III-V were subjected uninterrupted to sublethal concentrations (10% of 96 h LC50) of heavy metal compounds, HgCl2 (0.081 mg L(-1)), As2O3 (6.936 mg L(-1)) and CuSO(4).5H2O (0.407 mg

Regulation of CYP1A1 by heavy metals and consequences for drug metabolism.

Cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) is a hepatic and extrahepatic enzyme that is regulated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling pathway. With the growing human exposure to heavy metals, emerging evidence suggests that heavy metals exposure alter CYP1A1 enzyme activity. Heavy metals regulate CYP1A1 at different levels of its aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling pathway in a metal- and species-dependent manner. The importance of CYP1A1 emerges from the fact that it has been always associated with the metabolism of pro-carcinogenic compounds to highly carcinogenic metabolites. However, recently CYP

Interactions between heavy metals and photosynthetic materials studied by optical techniques.

In this work studies on rapid inhibitory interactions between heavy metals and photosynthetic materials at different organization levels were carried out by optical assay techniques, investigating the possibility of applications in the heavy metal detection field. Spinach chloroplasts, thylakoids and Photosystem II proteins were employed as biotools in combination with colorimetric assays based on dichlorophenol indophenole (DCIP) photoreduction and on fluorescence emission techniques. It was found that copper and mercury demonstrated a strong and rapid photosynthetic activity inhibition, that

[Dynamic leaching behavior of heavy metals in eco-cement mortar block].

A dynamic leaching test with the renewal of acidic leaching medium was designed to study the leaching behavior of the seven heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in three solidified eco-cement mortar samples with different particle size (fine granule, coarse granule, block) under a long-term leaching condition. It was demonstrated that all the heavy metals were detected in the leachate except Cd. The leaching ratio of Cr was the highest when compared with other metals in the same sample, and the leaching ratio of every metal showed an identical tendency: fine granule> coarse granule > bloc

Competitive sorption and desorption of heavy metals by individual soil components.

Knowledge of sorption and desorption of heavy metals by individual soil components should be useful for modelling the behaviour of soils of arbitrary composition when contaminated by heavy metals, and for designing amendments increasing the fixation of heavy metals by soils polluted by these species. In this study the competitive sorption and desorption of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn by humified organic matter, Fe and Mn oxides, kaolinite, vermiculite and mica were investigated. Due to the homogeneity of the sorbents, between-metal competition for binding sites led to their preferences for one o

Heavy metals extraction from contaminated soil: recovery of the flushing solution.

The optimum conditions for the recovery of copper from a contaminated soil by using the soil flushing technique are evaluated. Tests on a soil artificially contaminated with copper chloride were carried out in order to evaluate the influence of the speed of percolation and of the chelating agent concentration (aqueous solution of an ethylendiaminotetraacetic acid di-sodium salt Na2-EDTA). At pH=7.3 an efficiency up to 93.9% for copper extraction was achieved by flushing 500 ml of Na2-EDTA 0.05 M solution and 100 ml of pure water at 0.792 cm/h. At these operating conditions the formation of EDT

Heavy metals removal from electroplating wastewater by aminopropyl-Si MCM-41.

The potential of removing nickel and copper from industrial electroplating wastewaters by using mesoporous materials with MCM-41 type structure functionalised with different ratios of aminopropyl groups, namely Na50, Na25 and Na5, were evaluated. The synthesised solids sorbents obtained were characterised by X-ray diffraction, elemental chemical analysis and IR spectroscopy. In preliminary experiments, studies were carried out to determine the optimal experimental conditions for the retention of heavy ions. Effects of concentration, optimal pH, interference with humic substances and other meta

Heavy metals in sediments, mussels and oysters from Trinidad and Venezuela.

The Gulf of Paria is bordered by both Trinidad and Venezuela, from which various metallic pollutants and other contaminants can originate. The Gulf is still a significant source of fish, crabs and shellfish for human consumption to both countries, where concerns over the quality of this marine environment have been long expressed but never properly addressed. In addition, the circulatory current patterns in the Gulf ensure that contaminants originating from either country are likely to affect both countries eventually. Heavy metals were determined in oysters (Crassostrea rhizophorae and C. vir

Simple and sequential extractions of heavy metals from different sewage sludges.

The presence of heavy metals in the sludges produced in waste-water treatment plants restricts their use for agricultural purposes. This study looks at different types of sludges (aerobic, anaerobic, unstabilised and sludge from a waste stabilisation pond) and compares the distribution of the heavy metals they contain according to the treatment that they have undergone. Some agronomic parameters necessary for characterising a sludge as suitable for use as amendment were determined. The aim of this study is to compare the availability and the localisation of heavy metals in different sewage slu

[Thyroid function in smelters after long-term exposure to heavy metals].

In the year 1995 in a group of 93 male workers of a copper smelter (mean age = 40,7 years, exposure time = 8,5 years) following parameters were measured: blood levels of: lead and cadmium; serum levels of copper, zinc, calcium and magnesium-with use of atomic absorption spectrophotometry; FEP-with Piomelli's method; and T3, T4 and TSH in serum with radioimmunometric method. Mean blood lead level was 38,2 micrograms/dl, and concentrations of other metals and hormones were within norm limits. Mean level of FEP was slightly above norm (FEP = 106,5 micrograms/100 ml E). We found no correlation bet

Gamma/delta T cells and human skin reactivity to heavy metals.

Gamma/delta T cells may act as a first line of defence and respond to stress signals from the surrounding tissue. In the present investigation the occurrence of gamma/delta T cells was studied in the human skin after application of heavy metal salts by a routine epicutaneous patch-testing procedure. Gamma/delta cells were not found in normal skin. They were observed in all 14 allergic or irritant patch-test reactions to gold chloride and in 6/8 such reactions to mercuric chloride, where they comprised 16 +/- 6% and 15 +/- 6%, respectively, of the CD3+ cells in the dermis. They were also epider

New aspects of murine coxsackie B3 myocarditis--focus on heavy metals.

The magnitude of inflammatory lesions in the hearts of coxsackie B3 (CB3)-virus infected mice can be affected by the potentially toxic heavy metals cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni) and methyl mercury (MeHg). The infection is associated with a changed distribution, such as Cd accumulation in the spleen and kidneys. New target organs for Ni during the infection were the heart, pancreas and lungs in which inflammatory lesions were present. This increased uptake was correlated with the disturbed function of immune cells and an increased inflammatory reaction. Ni and MeHg appeared to have a direct effect

Hypertension: heavy metals, useful cations and melanin as a possible repository.

Popular belief has often attributed the disproportionate occurrence of hypertension in blacks to the increased social stresses faced by the minority population. Evidence now points to a more biologically relevant explanation of black hypertension, an increase in levels of heavy metals. Preferentially bound to melanin, cadmium, lead, and copper have implications not only in the etiology of black hypertension, but in the etiology of all hypertension. Of course, hypertension is heterogeneous by nature and cannot be attributed solely to any single cause. However, the indictment of the heavy metals

Pollutants in harp seals (Phoca groenlandica). II. Heavy metals and selenium.

Between 1976 and 1978, 249 harp seals were sampled from five locations in the Northwest Atlantic and Arctic for heavy metal and selenium residue analyses in tissue. Significant loading was apparent only in blood, brain, kidney, liver and muscle. Samples were analysed for mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). The seals carried higher levels of Cd than of the other metals. Residue levels of Cd were highest in kidney tissue; levels of other metals were highest in liver. Both males and females bioaccumulated Cd, Hg and Se. Cd, Hg, Se and Cu residues were detected in

Airborne microplastics as concentrators of anthropogenic heavy metals: Differentiation of intrinsic additive-derived metals and post-emission enrichment.

Microplastics (MPs) can act as both carriers of intrinsic additive metals and scavengers of ambient contaminants, yet information regarding metal-associated atmospheric MPs remains limited. This study investigated the spatial and seasonal characteristics of suspended MPs and associated metals in science park, urban, and rural regions of Hsinchu, Taiwan. Total suspended particulate samples were collected, and MPs were characterized using fluorescence microscopy and μFTIR. Additive and adsorbed metals associated with MPs were operationally separated through density fractionation and acid digesti

[Metal-binding capacity of metallothioneins of the liver of rats poisoned with heavy metals].

The functioning of metallothioneins in the liver of rats, poisoned with copper sulfate and cadmium sulfate has been investigated. By sequential chromatography on sephadex G-50 and DEAE-cellulose the authors obtained metallothioneins (MT-1, MT-1A, MT-2, MT-2a), which differ in molecular weight and composition of associated metals. Heavy metal poisoning leads to activation of synthesis and metal-binding function of metallothioneins, as well as to changes in the composition of their isoforms.

Can heavy metal pollution induce bacterial resistance to heavy metals and antibiotics in soils from an ancient land-mine?

Microbial resistance to antibiotics is a growing challenge to human health. Recent evidence has indicated that antibiotic resistance can be co-selected for by exposure to heavy metals in agricultural soils. It remains unknown if this is a concern in other environments contaminated by metals. We here investigated soil microbial activities, composition and tolerance to heavy metals and antibiotics in a mining soil survey. We found that microbial respiration, growth, and biomass were affected by available metal concentrations. Most of the variation in microbial PLFA composition was explained by d
