Surfactant pollution, an emerging threat to ecosystem: Approaches for effective bacterial degradation.

The use of surfactants in households and industries is inevitable and so is their discharge into the environment, especially into the water bodies as effluents. Being surface-active agents, their utilization is mostly seen in soaps, detergents, personal care products, emulsifiers, wetting agents, etc. Anionic surfactants are the most used class. These surfactants are responsible for the foam and froth in the water bodies and cause potential adverse effects to both biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem. Surfactants are capable of penetrating the cell membrane and thus cause toxicity to

Actively N2O-Reducing Oxygen-Tolerant Microbial Consortium Attained by Using a High-Dilution-Rate Chemostat Fed with Methanol.

Nitrous oxide-reducing bacteria (N2ORB) are generally considered the only biological sink for the potent greenhouse gas N2O. Although N2O consumption activities by diverse heterotrophic N2ORB have been detected, knowledge gaps remain about the phylogenies, physiologies, and activities of N2ORB. Here, we successfully enriched a methylotrophic N2ORB consortium under intermittent oxygen and N2O supplies. 15N tracer analysis showed that the N2O consumption activity of the enriched consortium was higher than its N2O production activity in the presence of either a single or multiple electron accepto

Enhancement of perchloroethene dechlorination by a mixed dechlorinating culture via magnetic nanoparticle-mediated isolation method.

Highly enriched active dechlorinating cultures are important in advancing microbial remediation technology. This study attempted to enrich a rapid perchloroethene (PCE) dechlorinating culture via magnetic nanoparticle-mediated isolation (MMI). MMI is a novel method that can separate the fast-growing and slow-growing population in a microbial community without labelling. In the MMI process, PCE dechlorination was enhanced but the subsequent trichloroethene (TCE) dechlorination was inhibited, with TCE cumulative rate reached up to 80.6% within 70 days. Meanwhile, the microbial community was also

Stable carbon isotope fractionation of chlorinated ethenes by a microbial consortium containing multiple dechlorinating genes.

The study aimed to determine the possible contribution of specific growth conditions and community structures to variable carbon enrichment factors (Ɛ-carbon) values for the degradation of chlorinated ethenes (CEs) by a bacterial consortium with multiple dechlorinating genes. Ɛ-carbon values for trichloroethylene, cis-1,2-dichloroethylene, and vinyl chloride were -7.24% ± 0.59%, -14.6% ± 1.71%, and -21.1% ± 1.14%, respectively, during their degradation by a microbial consortium containing multiple dechlorinating genes including tceA and vcrA. The Ɛ-carbon values of all CEs were not greatly aff

Nitrate levels modulate the abundance of Paracoccus sp. in a biofilm community.

Conditions required to enhance a particular species efficient in degradative capabilities is very useful in wastewater treatment processes. Paracoccus sp. is known to efficiently reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) due to the branched denitrification pathway. Individual-based simulations showed that the relative fitness of Paracoccus sp. to Pseudomonas sp. increased significantly with nitrate levels above 5 mM. Spatial structure of the biofilm showed substantially less nitrite levels in the areas of Paracoccus sp. dominance. The simulation was validated in a laboratory reactor harboring biofilm commu

Enhanced degradation of polyethylene terephthalate by a two-strain microbial consortium.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) degradation is often limited by insufficient polymer depolymerization and the downstream conversion of hydrolysis products. In this study, Burkholderia cepacia ZY1 and Pseudomonas harudinis G1B were compared, and a two-strain consortium, YB2, was constructed at an optimal inoculation ratio of 4:5. ZY1 showed relatively stronger PET depolymerization-related activity, whereas G1B exhibited greater growth in bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET)- and mono(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (MHET)-containing media and a trend toward faster BHET conversion. The hydrol

Active methylotrophic methanogenesis by a microbial consortium enriched from a terrestrial meteorite impact crater.

Microbial methane generation (methanogenesis) is an important metabolic process in the terrestrial deep biosphere and is an analog to early Earth as it is proposed to be one of the most ancient metabolisms on Earth. Signs of methanogenesis in meteorite impact craters are of particular interest in this respect as these settings are proposed hot spots for deep microbial colonization of the upper crust. Yet, reports of active deep rock-hosted methanogenesis are scarce, particularly for methylotrophic methanogenesis, while reports from terrestrial meteorite impact craters are completely lacking. H

Dysbiosis of vaginal and cervical microbiome is associated with uterine fibroids.

Dysbiosis of the female reproductive tract is closely associated with gynecologic diseases. Here, we aim to explore the association between dysbiosis in the genital tract and uterine fibroids (UFs) to further provide new insights into UF etiology. We present an observational study to profile vaginal and cervical microbiome from 29 women with UFs and 38 healthy women, and 125 samples were obtained and sequenced. By comparing the microbial profiles between different parts of the reproductive tract, there is no significant difference in microbial diversity between healthy subjects and UF patients

Multispecies Diesel Fuel Biodegradation and Niche Formation Are Ignited by Pioneer Hydrocarbon-Utilizing Proteobacteria in a Soil Bacterial Consortium.

A soil bacterial consortium that was grown on diesel fuel and consisted of more than 10 members from different genera was maintained through repetitive subculturing and was utilized as a practical model to investigate a bacterial community that was continuously exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons. Through metagenomics analyses, consortium member isolation, growth assays, and metabolite identification which supported the linkage of genomic data and functionality, two pioneering genera, Sphingobium and Pseudomonas, whose catabolic capabilities were differentiated, were found to be responsible for

Effects of sulfate reduction on the bacterial community and kinetic parameters of a dechlorinating culture under chemostat growth conditions.

Results are presented from a chemostat study where the reductive dehalogenation of PCE was evaluated in the absence and presence of sulfate. Two chemostats inoculated with the Point Mugu culture, which contains strains of Dehalococcoides mccartyi, were operated at a 50 day HRT and fed PCE (1.12 mM) and lactate (4.3 mM). The control chemostat (PM-5L, no sulfate), achieved pseudo-steady-state transformation of PCE to ethene (98%) and VC (2%) at 2.4 nM of H(2). Batch kinetic tests with chemostat harvested cells showed the maximum rate (k(max)X) value for each dehalogenation step remained fairly c

Mineral transformation of poorly crystalline ferrihydrite to hematite and goethite facilitated by an acclimated microbial consortium in electrodes of soil microbial fuel cells.

In this study, we investigated the biogenic mineral transformation of poorly crystalline ferrihydrite in the presence of an acclimated microbial consortium after confirming successful soil microbial fuel cell optimization. The acclimated microbial consortia in the electrodes distinctly transformed amorphous ferrihydrite into crystallized hematite (cathode) and goethite (anode) under ambient culture conditions (30 °C). Serial analysis, including transmission/scanning electron microscopy and X-ray/selected area electron diffraction, confirmed that the biogenically synthesized nanostructures were

Bacterial swarms recruit cargo bacteria to pave the way in toxic environments.

UNLABELLED: Swarming bacteria are challenged by the need to invade hostile environments. Swarms of the flagellated bacterium Paenibacillus vortex can collectively transport other microorganisms. Here we show that P. vortex can invade toxic environments by carrying antibiotic-degrading bacteria; this transport is mediated by a specialized, phenotypic subpopulation utilizing a process not dependent on cargo motility. Swarms of beta-lactam antibiotic (BLA)-sensitive P. vortex used beta-lactamase-producing, resistant, cargo bacteria to detoxify BLAs in their path. In the presence of BLAs, both tra

Phage-bacteria network analysis and its implication for the understanding of coral disease.

Multiple studies have explored microbial shifts in diseased or stressed corals; however, little is known about bacteriophage interactions with microbes in this context. This study characterized microbial 16S rRNA amplicons and phage metagenomes associated with Montastraea annularis corals during a concurrent white plague disease outbreak and bleaching event. Phage consortia differed between bleached and diseased tissues. Phages in the family Inoviridae were elevated in diseased or healthy tissues compared with bleached portions of diseased tissues. Microbial communities also differed between d

Gnotobiotic and Conventional Mouse Systems to Support Microbiota Based Studies.

Animal models are essential to dissect host-microbiota interactions that impact health and the development of disease. In addition to providing pre-clinical models for the development of novel therapeutics and diagnostic biomarkers, mouse systems actively support microbiome studies by defining microbial contributions to normal development and homeostasis, and as well as their role in promoting diseases such as inflammatory auto-immune diseases, diabetes, metabolic syndromes, and susceptibilities to infectious agents. Mice provide a genetically tenable host that can be reared under gnotobiotic

The diversity and origins of toxins in ciguatera fish poisoning.

The source of the diversity of phytotoxins found in the marine food web is not well understood. It is not clear what roles these secondary metabolites might have in the phytoplankton that produce them. The phytotoxins do not appear to be deterrents of predation, although the production of antibiotics by marine macroalgae might be considered in this light (86). It is equally doubtful that the production and/or presence of these toxins confers a selective advantage on the phytoplankton producers, when in fact the diversity of naturally occurring phytoplankton species may well be maintained by ly

Co-immobilization of Ciprofloxacin and Chlorhexidine as a Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial Dual-Drug Coating for Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)-Based Endotracheal Tubes.

The endotracheal tube (ETT) affords support for intubated patients, but the increasing incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is jeopardizing its application. ETT surfaces promote (poly)microbial colonization and biofilm formation, with a heavy burden for VAP. Devising safe, broad-spectrum antimicrobial materials to tackle the ETT bioburden is needful. Herein, we immobilized ciprofloxacin (CIP) and/or chlorhexidine (CHX), through polydopamine (pDA)-based functionalization, onto poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) surfaces. These surfaces were characterized regarding physicochemical properti

Trilogy of comprehensive treatment of kitchen waste by bacteria-microalgae-fungi combined system: Pretreatment, water purification and resource utilization, and biomass harvesting.

Given its profound disservice, a bacteria-microalgae-fungi combined system was designed to treat kitchen waste. Firstly, a new type of microbial agent homemade compound microorganisms (HCM) (composed of Serratia marcescens, Bacillus subtilis and other 11 strains) with relatively high bio-security were developed for pretreating kitchen waste, and HCM efficiently degraded 85.2 % cellulose, 94.3 % starch, and 59.0 % oil. HCM also accomplished brilliantly the initial nutrients purification and liquefaction conversion of kitchen waste. Under mono-culture mode (fungi and microalgae were inoculated s

Regulation of antibiotic resistance genes dissemination by in situ formed iron sulfide nanoparticles in anaerobic microbial communities.

The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of in situ-synthesized iron sulfide nanoparticles (bio-FeS NPs) on the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in anaerobic microbial consortia. The absolute abundance of plasmid RP4-associated extracellular ARGs (eARGs) decreased by more than 103 copies/ng DNA in the anaerobic consortia containing in situ-formed bio-FeS NPs (AnBR-FeS NPs). Mechanistic analysis revealed that the inhibitory effect was related to the absence of a significant correlation between functional bacteria such as Nitratidesulfovibrio in AnBR-FeS NPs and

Biodegradation of chlorinated aliphatics and aromatic compounds in total-recycle expanded-bed biofilm reactors.

Ground-water contamination by chlorinated aliphatic compounds is a major cause for concern because of their toxicity. This study examined the biodegradation of trichloroethylene and aromatic compounds by microbial consortia enriched from contaminated subsurface sediments. The consortia were capable of utilizing methane and propane as sources of carbon and energy. Two continuously recycled expanded-bed bioreactors were inoculated with (1) the subsurface consortium, and (2) P. fluorescence, P. putida (strains pRB1401 and pWWO), and M. trichosporium OB3b. The female urogenital microbiome: Ecological insights, therapeutic strategies, and molecular mechanisms.

Microbiome-based interventions for female urogenital health have gained attention, particularly in strategies aimed at restoring lactobacilli dominance to reduce infection and improve reproductive outcomes. These approaches include defined probiotic strains, engineered microbial consortia, and vaginal microbiota transfer. Observational studies have provided ecological insights into the composition and dynamics of the vaginal microbiome; its associations with infections, inflammation, and reproductive complications; and its interplay with urinary and mucosal niches. These data establish a corre
